TEAM & COURT 1st - 2nd Grade BASKETBALL RULES 5 v 5 full court 8 ft. basket height The playing court will be the regular boundary lines. GAME TIME Four (4) 8-minute running clock quarters. The clock will only stop for free throws, timeouts, and injuries. Teams will be allowed four (4) 1-minute timeouts per game. Halftime will be three (3) minutes. Quarter breaks will be one (1) minute. Referees will be the time keeper and will alert coaches for substitutions at the 4- minute mark of each quarter. A coin toss will determine first possession. The referee will keep track of the possession arrow thereafter. Teams will switch directions at halftime. DEFENSE Man to man defense only. Defenders may not steal the ball, unless it's on the pass. No double teaming is allowed. Setting screens (picks) is not allowed. When the offense has established possession (the beginning of possessions and all throw ins), defense will not be allowed until the ball crosses half court On loose balls the defense may extend beyond half court to try and secure the ball, but the team that doesn't secure possession must then get back inside half court to defend. All players will be required to wear a colored pinnie, and must guard the opposing team member with the same colored pinnie. FOULS AND FREE THROWS Free throws will be shot for shooting fouls only. Non-shooting fouls will be awarded a throw in at the closest spot out of bounds. The free throw line will be moved four feet closer to the basket. Fouls will not be tracked, but referees may ask coaches to substitute a player who fouls repeatedly.

OTHER Score will not be kept. All players must play as close to equal playing time as possible. A junior sized basketball will be used. Referees will be very lenient on double dribble and travel rules. As the season progresses, the referees will call these rules tighter at their discretion to help the players improve. 3 seconds in the lane or key will not be called. All players must wear the WCC t-shirt that is provided. If this shirt is unavailable, another shirt of the same color must be worn. Non-marking athletic shoes must be worn. Bracelets, necklaces, watches, earrings, hard barrettes, and any other items that the referee deems potentially hazardous will be prohibited. Medical alert bracelets must be taped. Hard casts are not allowed under any circumstances. SPORTSMANSHIP FOR PLAYERS, COACHES, AND FANS Players - unsportsmanlike conduct or aggressive play will not be tolerated!!! If the referee witnesses any acts of unsportsmanlike conduct, the game will be stopped and the player or players will be ejected from the game. Any ejection also carries a one game suspension for the following game. Any coach that is ejected from a game: 1. Must leave the field or facility immediately (this means the referees should not be able to hear or see you!). The game will not be played until this happens. 2. Will automatically be suspended for the following game. 3. Could be subject to further disciplinary action at the Youth Sports Coordinator's discretion, including removal from his/her coaching duties. Any fan that is ejected from a game must leave the field or facility immediately (this means the referees should not be able to hear or see you!). The game will not be played until this happens.

The referee will keep track of the possession arrow thereafter. Teams will switch directions at halftime. DEFENSE Man to man or zone defense is allowed. No double teaming is allowed. Defense will not be allowed until the ball and player crosses the three-point circle extended in both directions. The clock will not run in the last minute of the game until the ball crosses midcourt if the difference in score is three points or less.
