Discovery Charter School Volume 52 December 2016 Through the Telescope A Month of Giving! December brings out kindness and cheer in all of us. Students here at Discovery are no exception. They have been putting together drives for those less fortunate and creating gifts for those in need. The Kindness Crew at both campuses created cards and collected items for Veterans here in Southern Nevada. Several students visited the Boulder City Veterans Home and passed out cards, book marks and silk flowers. Mrs. Kettleson is working with a group of students at the Hillpointe campus that have dubbed themselves, The Fab Five. These students have just completed Operation Paw Print where they collected hundreds (yes, hundreds!) of items that they delivered to the NSPCA to help with abandoned and lost pets. Currently the Fab Five are working on Operation Kindness which involves collecting items for the homeless that will be donated to the Rescue Mission before we get out for winter break. Students in Mrs. McDonough s class at the Mesa Vista campus have been working to collect winter clothing and food items for those in need. This Saturday, our Hillpointe Jounalism Club will be hosting our first ever Holiday Bake Sale and Boutique. This is a fundraiser to support Discovery families in need. No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted. Aesop

GET THE DISCOVERY APP!! The Discovery app is a great addition to our ways to communicate. The app is available for both the iphone and android. It allows for instant access to teacher emails and website, alerts families of important website updates and allows us to send push notifications for the super important stuff. Just click on the appropriate phone to the right to download the app or visit the itunes or android store. Miss Rivera is back at it again for The One and Only Santa Claus. In a series of hilarious and heart-warming sketches, Yul Tide and co-host Chrystal Flakes explore what Santa Claus really represents, introducing us to various people who know and love him. The show is full of bloopers and comical bickering as the TV crew clamors to find old St. Nick. But Santa s not the only thing that s missing. They can t seem to find their Christmas spirit, either! Though they might have lost track of what Christmas is all about, kids in the audience haven t, for they see Santa throughout the show, even though none of the adults can! Along the way, we meet the mail carrier for the North Pole, Santa s staff of elves as they run through their final check-list, mall santas, moms and dads, and even a shadowy figure with big ears who s not so keen on the great gift-giver (think other furry holiday figures)! When: Thursday, December 15th at 6pm Where: The Whitney Library located at 5175 E Tropicana Las Vegas, NV 89122 Who: Miss Rivera s amazing theatrical cast and crew! Page 2 Through the Telescope

Holiday Bake Sale and Boutique Need to get some holiday shopping done or maybe you need to give the gift of baked goods to your neighbor. Please join the Journalism Club on Saturday, December 10th at their Holiday Bake Sale and Boutique to support DCS families in need. Families can look forward to fresh baked goods, raffle baskets and representatives from companies such as Rethreads:Foxy Style, Avon, Desirae s Closet, Scentsy, Paparazzi Jewelry, Usborne Gifts and so much more! We hope to see you there! Basketball season is upon us!! Practices will begin this week. Please make sure you have turned in player packets or waivers. The player fee of $85 is due by December 15th. We will be using the TeamSnap App, please be sure to accept the invitation when you receive it and download the app. This app allows for messaging, emails and schedule updates. Teams and their coaches are as follows: Mesa Vista 3/4 Coed-Coach B Mesa Vista 7/8 Coed-Coach Acker Hillpointe 3/4 & 7/8 Coed-Coach Johnny Hillpointe 5/6 Boys-Coach Hoon Volume 52 Page 3

The arrival of cold weather brings with it sniffles, sneezes and coughing. Please remember if your student is ill to keep them home. This makes a great difference in the spread of illness. Here are a few tips to help keep your kids healthy during the winter season. Remind them to wash their hands! Before and after a meal, after returning from recess and after using the restroom. Cover their sneezes and coughs. Give them a package of tissues to keep in their backpack and encourage them to sneeze or cough into the tissue. Remind children to keep their hands out of their eyes and mouth. Make it a rule to never share water bottles, food or other personal items. If you put the item in your mouth, do not share with anyone else. As always, it is important to eat a healthy diet and get plenty of rest. Please be sure to visit the lost and found buckets at both campuses. We have a collection of jackets, lunch boxes and water bottles that we would love to see returned to their owners. Items not retrieved by December 15th will be donated to a worthy cause.
