PRESIDENT S MESSAGE BOB FORD IT IS NOW TIME FOR THE GCSAA CONFERENCE IN LAS VEGAS January 28 - February 4, 1984 These conferences just seem to get better and better each year. Jim Prusa is doing a great job with the educational sessions which offer something for every one. With such a diversified range of learning material being offered and the close proximity of the conference to our area, I would urge everyone to attend. These conferences not only give you a chance to absorb new knowledge, meet people and exchange ideas, but to voice your opinion for the betterment of our association. It has become very evident as of late, that we have several national members that are not members of any local superintendents chapter. Are we loosing their voting strength? By the same token, we have many local chapter members that are not national members. What is the problem? California has the potential of being the most influencial state in the association and must rate as the golf capital of the world. Why not support your associations that are your bread and butter! meetings [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] January 25-26 - Turf & Landscape Exposition-Oakland Convention Center Jan 29-Feb 4 - GCSAA's Conference and Show, Las Vegas, Nevada February PLFASF TONTAPT March PLACES ARE NEEDED FOR MEETINGS R a n d y G a i 415 654-8972 April May 20-21 - California GCSA - Annual State Meeting -Rancho Canada,Carmel AUTOMATIC RAIN CO - Willard 4060 Campbell Avenue Menlo Park 94025 BAY IRRIGATION & TURF 2041 Commerce Avenue Concord 94520 KEITH BRAMAN, IRRIGATION 21535 Stage Coach Road Los Gatos 95030 SUPPLY Hayes CONSULTANT BRAMAN PIPE & SUPPLY CO 1525 Walsh Ave Santa Clara 95050 BROWN SAND, INC. 874 East Woodward Avenue Manteca 95336 H. Golf by Michael R. Clark, C6CS The Highlights of our Christmas golf tournament have to include the good weather we had. Larry and his staff had the course in great shape for our group of 72. Also included in the happenings of the day, have to be the eagle 3 Ken Sakai made on the Par 5 17th hole. Steve Taylor had his first ever Birdie on one of the par 3 1 s. And our President Bob Ford had a net 66, considering all the distractions in his foursome, that is quite an accomplishment. The totaled and signed scorecards were really appreciated, NOW if we could get everyone to post their scores on the green "Away 11 play sheet. Naumann's Norcal News - by Don Naumann In Menioriam - Bill De Lozier, former Superintendent at Crystal Springs Golf Course in Burlingame recently passed away. Peter Dempsey, P.H.D. former Superintendent at Yolo Fliers Country Club in Woodland, has accepted the position of Director of the Golf Course Operations and Landscape Design Departments at Lake City Community College in Lake City, Florida. Lake City Community College has a department with a 2 year program for developing Golf Course Superintendents. It hcs the highest per cent of graduates that become Superintendents of all the colleges and universities in the nation. Steve Carlton from San Jose Country Club is keeping up with the times. He recently purchased an Apple lie Computer which he is using to keep all golf course records on, including the budget, water consumption and hourly usage of all equipment. TARSEM APPREICATION DAY Tarsem Singh that is. Over the past four years the members of the Pittsburg Golf and Country Club have seen a tremendous change in our course. If you'll remember, at one time you didn't dare stray from the fairway. An errant ball was lost forever in the bordering jungle. Our traps were overrun with weeds, tees were uneven and thin, and greens were dry. Our equipment was held together with bailing wire and chewing gum and barely operative. Membership was down, money was scarce, and our credit limit had long ago been reached. Fortunately, the Board of Directors had the presence of mind and foresight to hire Tarsem Singh. Even with limited equipment and help Tarsem eliminated the bordering jungles and gave us playable rough and hazard areas. His watering schedule brought our greens back to life and he has continued to nurture the greens back to their current excellent condition. The traps are clean and most have been replaced with new light sand. Take a look at the fairways and you'll see thicker greener turf. And most recently, he has begun an ambitions tee renovation program. Still, as members, we must remember all this was accomplished with only one assistant, a poor pump and watering system, and limited financial resources. But as the course improved so did the membership and revenue. We now have new, excellent equipment and maintenance facilities, and the future looks even brighter. Tarsem has not only devoted his time and labor to our course but also has become an important member of our club. He takes part in all our club functions, throws darts for one-of our teams, and represents the club as a Class Amember of the Superintendents Association. There isn't a member of the club that does not call him a friend.

Today, the Pittsburg Golf & CC and friends extend to you an enthusiastic thank you. We appreciate your work, devotion, and most importantly, you. Thank you. Pittsburg Golf & CC - November 12, 1983
