The Sooners, who were No. 4 in the preseason poll, jumped Stanford and Maryland, to match its best ranking set in the final poll of the 2002 season when OU played for a national championship against Connecticut. Paris a Unanimous Pick for All-American Courtney Paris has been a regular on The Associated Press preseason All- America team the past few years. Now, the senior has joined an elite group as only the sixth unanimous choice in the 15-year history of the squad. Joining the Oklahoma center on the team were Connecticut s Maya Moore, Louisville s Angel McCoughtry, Maryland s Kristi Toliver, and Oklahoma State s Andrea Riley. For the first time, Paris was on every ballot of the 45-member national media panel. Previous unanimous selections were Chamique Holdsclaw, Diana Taurasi, Alana Beard, Seimone Augustus and Candace Parker. Big 12 Preseason Poll First-place votes in parenthesis. Big 12 Coaches Vote Paris, Hand There must be something in the water at the Lloyd Noble Center. After becoming the first school to sweep the Big 12 s preseason vote for No. 1 team in men s and women s basketball, Oklahoma swept the league s picks for preseason player of the year and freshman of the year. The Big 12 Conference named Courtney Paris its Preseason Player of the Year for a third consecutive season and Whitney Hand, who tied with Texas A&M s Tyra White, its Co-Preseason Freshman of the Year in a vote of the league s head coaches. Oklahoma No. 1 in Big 12 Poll In a vote of the league s coaches released Wednesday, the University of Oklahoma women s basketball team was the preseason favorite to win the 2009 Big 12 regular season championship. Sherri Coale s Sooners earned seven of the 12 first-place votes (coaches are not allowed to vote for their own teams) and 124 points to take No. 1. Texas (95) received one first-place vote for second in a close vote over Iowa State (93), which received two first-place votes. Baylor (89), with one first-place vote, Texas A&M (85), Oklahoma State (79 and one first-place vote), defending Big 12 champion Kansas State (71), Nebraska (56), Kansas (41), Texas Tech (36), Colorado (18) and Missouri (15), respectively, completed the poll. It is the second time in the last three seasons (2006-07) that Oklahoma has been the coaches preseason top pick and third time in the league s history (2001-02). The Big 12 s preseason favroite has earned at least a share of the conference title in five of the previous 11 seasons the poll was conducted, including the two previous times OU was No. 1. Wecker Joins Oklahoma Staff 2005 Big 12 Player of the Year Kendra Wecker would join the team as a graduate assistant. Wecker was a three-time All-Big 12 First Team member at Kansas State and was picked fourth overall by the San Antonio Silver Stars in the 2005 WNBA Draft. In 2007-08, Paris dominated with averages of 19 points, 15 rebounds and 3.5 blocks. She led the conference in rebounding and was second in scoring. Nationally, Paris was the only player to rank in the top 50 in more than three of the eight major statistical categories -- she ranked in the top 26 of four. BIG 12 FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR Danielle Robinson was the league s choice for freshman the year. Her blinding speed and quickness left a serious impression on opposing coaches. As such, she was the only freshman named to the Big 12 s All-Defensive Team. ASHLEY PARIS NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT Ashley Paris, a journalism major, was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 6 First Team this week. To qualify, canididates must have a 3.20 cumulative GPA or better and at least one year of academic residency. Coale Most Fun to Watch OU head coach Sherri Coale was recently voted by members of the Women s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) as the Most Fun to Watch head coach in the nation. No. 3 Nationally in Home Attendance Oklahoma was a national leader in home attendance once again in 2008. After 13 home games, OU s per game attendance average was 10,254, No. 3 in the nation for average home game attendance. The top two teams -- Tennessee and Connecticut -- have larger home seating capacities than OU s arena. Milestones 1,000th Game in Sooner History Oklahoma started its women s basketball program for the 1974-75 season and is approaching its 1,000th game. OU s final game of 2007-08 was its 999th, making the 2008-09 season opener the program s 1,000th.OU s all-time record is 580-421 (.580). Coale s 250th Victory Sherri Coale earned her 250th victory in her 12th year as the head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners. The Sooners defeated Texas A&M, 68-56, on Tuesday, Feb. 12, for the milestone win. Coale s is OU s and the Big 12 s all-time leader in coaching victories and winning percentage. Paris Passes 2,000 With her sixth point against Oklahoma State, Sunday, Feb. 23, Courtney Paris reached 2,000 career points quicker than any player in Big 12 or Oklahoma history. Paris was playing her 94th game. Paris finished the game with 18 points to boost her career total to 2,012. Paris 32nd Big 12 Record If passing 2,000 career points faster than any other player in Big 12 history wasn t enough, Courtney Paris literally grabbed her second Big 12 record in the game against Oklahoma State (Feb. 23). Paris grabbed a career high 11 offensive boards to overtake Baylor s Sophia Young (489, 2003-06) as the Big 12 career offensive rebounds leader. Third Consecutive 20-Win Season Oklahoma captured its third consecutive 20-win season and 13th in the program s history with is victory against Oklahoma State on Feb. 23. ASHLEY AND COURTNEY HIT THE CENTURY MARK Though Oklahoma has no seniors, it isn t necessarily lacking in playing experience. Both Ashley and Courtney Paris will played their 100th collegiate game when the Sooners met Notre Dame in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Courtney has started all but one, after requesting to sit on senior night as a freshman, and has scored in double figures in all of them. Notable Numbers The Circus Comes to Town When Connecticut visited Norman, Okla., to play the Sooners during the 1999-2000 season, a then-record crowd of 10,713 attended the game at the Lloyd Noble Center. OU head coach Sherri Coale likened the experience to the circus coming to town. It seems that Oklahoma now has its own three rings. A visit by the Sooners in 2007-08 boosted its opponent s attendance by 42 percent over its season average. Earning Sole Possession Oklahoma s Sherri Coale leads Iowa State s Bill Fennelly for most regular-season Big 12 Conference coaching victories with 121. Coale, Fennelly and former Texas head coach Jody Conradt had equal 110-66 records entering OU s Big 12 opener against Iowa State, which the Sooners won 67-64. Oklahoma went 11-5 in the Big 12 this season while Iowa State was 7-9.

The preseason No. 4 Sooners jumped Stanford and Maryland, to match its best ranking set in the final poll of the 2002 season when OU played for a national championship against Connecticut. Oklahoma s No. 2 rating is the Big 12 s highest since Baylor was ranked No. 1 in the final coaches poll after winning the 2005 national championship. It is the highest AP listing since Baylor was No. 2 in the Jan. 10, 2005 edition. Postgame Leftovers Courtney Paris sets Scoring Record The second-ranked Sooners never trailed at home against Arizona State, winning the Preseason WNIT semifinal, 70-57. Courtney Paris scored 19 points and 20 rebounds for her 100th career double-double and passed Phylesha Whaley as OU s career scoring leader. Holding Guard Oklahoma s defense has allowed opponents starting guards just two points. Opposing guards have combined to score 40 points on 13-for-51 (.255) field-goal shooting in 196 combined minutes of play. Conversely, OU starting guards, sophomore Danielle Robinson and freshman Whitney Hand, are 22-for-52 (.423) for 54 points in 159 combined minutes. Paris GETS ANOTHER RECORD Courtney Paris scored 19 points against Arizona State (Nov. 21) to pass Phylesha Whaley (2,187) as OU s career scoring leader. Paris currently has 2,189 career points. More on Paris Scoring Efficiency Phylesha Whaley scored 2,187 points in 116 career games and an OU record 4,025 minutes played. Courtney Paris passed Whaley s mark with 2,189 points in 103 games. Paris 3,152 minutes played -- 873 fewer than Whaley -- isn t even in the top 10 on Oklahoma s career marks. Rebound Record on Pace The two-time NCAA single-season rebounding leader also passed LSU s Sylvia Fowles for third on the NCAA career rebounding list. With 1,578 career rebounds, Paris needs 84 to match Patricia Hoskins for second. Oklahoma Plays Game No. 1,000 Oklahoma played its 1,000th game since the program was re-established in 1974 following the passing of Title IX. The Sooners all-time record is 581-421 (.581). Lucky Number Seven Whitney Hand became just the seventh true freshman under OU head coach Sherri Coale to start in her first collegiate game, joining LaNeisha Caufield, Stacey Dales, Caton Hill, Courtney Paris, Chelsi Welch and Phylesha Whaley. Here s a quick look at the attendance records set recently by the program: 2002 - NCAA Championship Game Record Attendance: 29,619 2007 - Big 12 Championship Game Record Attendance: 12,413 2007 - Program record for home average: 10,437 2008 - State record for single-game women s attendance: 13,611 2008 - Program record No. 3 national attendance ranking: 10,254 2008 - Lloyd Noble Center three consecutive sellouts to finish season 2008 - Averaged 42 percent increase for opponent during road games Points in the Paris Coined by Nancy Lieberman after witnessing OU s dominating inside game against Georgia, Oklahoma opponents can forget about outscoring the Sooners in the paint thanks to the Paris twins. Last year, OU outscored opponents in the paint by an average of 41 to 22. Courtney supplies 15 per game (37 percent) in the paint while Ashley contributes seven points (18 percent) in the paint per game. Together the sisters average 22 points in the paint -- as much as the entire opposing roster and half of OU s total. OU has outscored opponents 138-68 in the paint in 2008-09. Twice as Nice The Paris twins have scored in double figures in the same game on 38 occasions, achieving the feat 20 times in 2007-08 after doing so 11 times in 2006-07. Since Courtney has scored in double figures in all of her 103 career games, the 38 occasions account for every double-figure game of Ashley s career. The duo has posted a double-double in the same game 13 times (four as freshman, two as sophomores, five as juniors, twice as seniors). OU is 33-5 when both Parises reach double figure scoring and 10-3 when both achieve a double-double. Ashley Paris as a Starter Since taking over as a full time starter, Ashley Paris is making her name as well known as her sister s. Prior to the season, she had 15 starts in 69 games. She started all 31 games in 2007-08, averaging 11.3 points per game, to boost her career scoring average to 8.1 per game in 100 games played. Block Party Courtney Paris is the first player in NCAA history to have at least 100 blocks in each of her first three seasons. She set the NCAA freshman single-season blocks record at 119 and then had 111 as a sophomore and 108 as a junior. Even Sandora Irvin, who is the NCAA s all-time blocks leader with 480, did not have over 100 her freshman season. D-Rob, Most Valuable Freshman Oklahoma s Danielle Robinson was the only freshman on a Top 25 program to lead her team in assists and steals. Robinson broke out in OU s win against Illinois, scoring eight of her 14 points during a 16-3 run in the second half, lifting the Sooners to a 70-57 lead with 3:36 remaining. Robinson also had back-to-back steals for layups in the stretch. The Sooners won, 77-67, as Robinson recorded seven steals. Only two other NCAA Division I players LaToya Thomas, Mississippi State (1998-2002) and Chandi Jones, Houston (2000-04) have finished their careers scoring in double figures in every game. The most double-figure scoring games was accomplished by Sophia Young of Baylor (2003-06), who scored 10 or more points in 130 of her 139 career games. She is also the only player in NCAA history to total 700 points, 500 rebounds and 100 blocks in a single-season, a feat she has accomplished twice.

Oklahoma Women s Basketball Game Notes 8 103 Games, 100 Double-Doubles Courtney Paris has collected 100 double-doubles in 103 career games. She has an active streak of 95 consecutive games with a double-double. The streak began with a 22-point, 24-rebound effort versus UCLA on Dec. 5, 2005, and will be 1,088 days old when OU plays North Carolina on Nov. 23, 2008. Officially a Record It has long been thought that Courtney Paris double-double numbers were NCAA records. Beginning with the 2008-09 season, those statements are now factual. The NCAA has made single-season and career double-doubles as well as singleseason and career consecutive double-doubles new records for women s basketball. Single-Season Double-Doubles Courtney Paris, Oklahoma 2006 33 Courtney Paris, Oklahoma 2007 33 Anne Donovan, Old Dominion 1983 32 Courtney Paris, Oklahoma 2008 31 Cheryl Taylor, Tennessee Tech 1986 30 Single-Season Consecutive Double-Doubles Courtney Paris, Oklahoma Nov. 12, 2006-March 25, 2007 33 Courtney Paris, Oklahoma Nov. 11, 2007-March 25, 2008 31 Courtney Paris, Oklahoma dec. 5, 2005-March 25, 2006 28 Cheryl Miller, Southern Cal Nov. 28, 1984-Feb. 14, 1985 18 Gail Koziara, Dartmouth Jan. 16-Feb. 28, 1982 15 Career Double-Doubles Courtney Paris, Oklahoma 2006-Active 100 Cheryl Taylor, Tennessee Tech 1984-87 90 Janet Harris, Georgia 1982-85 78 Sylvia Fowles, LSU 2005-08 75 Career Consecutive Double-Doubles Courtney Paris, Oklahoma dec. 5, 2005-Active 95 Anne Donovan, Old Dominion Jan. 29, 1982-Dec. 29, 1983 19 Cheryl Miller, Southern Cal Nov. 28, 1994-Feb. 14, 1985 18 Double-Double Superlatives Talk about Paris double-double success gets stale, especially when she has had just three career games without one, the last being over 1,000 days ago. Consider: Double Double-Double Paris has played nine career games in which she has reached 20 points and 20 rebounds. Double-Double Animal Style Paris has 29 career games in which she has reached a double-double and recorded five or more blocks. The last was against Arizona State (Nov. 21) when she scored 19 points, 20 rebounds and six blocks. The Double-Double Half Paris has achieved a double-double 32 times in a single 20-minute period. She has reached the double-double figure by halftime on 13 occasions and has played 19 second halves alone in which she achieved a double-double. Paris had 10 doubledouble halves as a freshman, 14 as a sophomore, six as a junior and two as a senior. Comparing to Counterparts Beginning with the 2008-09 season, the NCAA officially recognized double-double records for women s basketball and, as was widely believed, Courtney Paris has owned them for quite some time. Even when comparing her game to the men s game, the records speak for themselves. The longest men s double-double streak was 40 games by North Carolina s Billy Cunningham, which coincidentally began on the same day (Dec. 5), 43 years prior to Paris streak. The most career double-doubles by the men belongs to Tim Duncan, who recorded 87 in his four seasons at Wake Forest (1994-97). The top five men s records are below. Oscar Robertson, Cincinnati 79 1958-60 Double-Double Success Rate Consistency perhaps is the most tangible trait that can be associated with Courtney Paris. Her standard is the double-double and, if and when, she fails to get her next, it will be a bigger story than when she next achieves it. Paris double-double success rate outpaces even the best in NCAA men s basketball history. The following details what percentage of the player s total games they achieved a double-double. Final Year D-D Games % Courtney Paris, Oklahoma 2009 100 103 97.09 Men s Record 1. Jerry Lucas, Ohio State 1962 78 82 95.12 2. Oscar Robertson, Cincinnati 1960 79 88 89.7 3.
