By Christopher Schmidt WORLD ROLLER FEDERATION EXPRESS Commemorative Card Set for ROLLER RUMBLE Roller Derby Game The World Roller Federation or WRF Express lasted for two seasons in the early 90s. Backed by promoter Patrick Schaefer it was the last serious attempt to establish a pro league after the demise of the IRSL and IRDL until Rollerjam was created in 2000. The games were mainly held in Northern California and Florida. At the time I had the pleasure of working with Patrick Schaefer on the international distribution of the WRF telecasts and I attended one of the games in Tampa, Florida where I also met up with Buddy Atkinson Jr. in person. What I liked about the WRF was the fact that it managed to sign up skaters from both the old IRSL and Roller Games International. Over the past month I have watched all of my old WRF tapes again to create this set. For ease of identification the teams are printed in different colors matching their actual uniforms of the time as best I could, as follows... California Fire, red and white. Cincinnati Lightning, orange and gray. Dallas Bandits, blue and white. Detroit Blaze, green and yellow. Miami Renegades, maroon and white. New York Thunder, light blue and gray. I also rated the coaches and you may use these as an optional rule in any tie-breaker situation during game play. The WRF used a format of 4-period games and they employed 1 and 4 blockers per jam. For consistency I have designated all skaters according to Roller Rumble positions but you can of course, use the original WRF rules by using any or as the designated in position 5 and reading all position references on the fast-action cards for 1-4 as blockers or skaters. --Chris Schmidt
