West Point City PARTY AT THE POINT JULY 4, 2018

Mayor s Message This year s Party at the Point celebration is going to be another must see event. As our community continues to grow, we are fortunate to be able to keep the small-town feel of our annual celebration. What other Independence Day event around this area serves dinner to those who attend? And it s not just boiled hotdogs - we serve first-class food bought from and prepared at our very own Smith s Marketplace. For those of you who come every year, welcome back! For those of you who are new to town or have not come to our celebration on July 4th, we invite you to come and see why this event gets bigger and better each year. Of course we couldn t do it with without our amazing volunteers and City Staff, so if you see them please tell them thanks for helping make this event so awesome. I would also like to thank our wonderful City Council who supports this celebration each and every year. You will see on this flyer that we have something for everyone, young and old, all throughout the day. I know everyone has their family traditions that may or may not include coming down to the Loy Blake Park, but if you only come to just one thing, make it be our amazing fireworks display at dusk. I promise you won t leave disappointed. Let s not forget, our country was founded by likeminded individuals who fought and died for the freedoms we all enjoy today. As a community, let s come together and celebrate this great day in our country s history. From every mountain side Let Freedom ring! - Samuel F. MOVIES IN THE PARK Be sure to join us for the up-coming movie nights. WEST POINT MILITARY MEMORIAL We are grateful to everyone who contributed in anyway to the West Point Military Memorial. The monument is one of the most beautiful and striking examples of the tribute we can pay to those who served in any of the armed services. Veterans posted on the military walls are representatives of this Nation s battles from the Spanish American War to the many wars currently being fought against insurgency. The question was asked: how many names are listed on the five military walls? Our records show the following: United States Army 253 United States Navy 118 United States Marine Corps 46 United States Air Force 199 Army and Air National Guards 33 United States Coast Guard 7 Total 656 On the donor wall there are listed 372 individuals, families, and businesses or organizations who provided financial support. Foremost were two corporation contributions of $10,000.00 from Smiths Market Place and from one that wishes to remain anonymous. The support we received from the community at large and from the City in particular was phenomenal. Some statistics of interest: Statue- Sculptor $30,000.00 Casting $30,000.00 Marble for military walls and benches (includes engraving) plus bronze plaques on the base: $27,000.00 Flag poles & flags $10,000.00 Miscellaneous (Concrete forms, sealant, lighting, addition of names, etc.) $9,000.00 Total $106,000.00 We exceeded our $100,000.00 goal for funding by more than $10,000.00 with the excess being held in reserve for future upkeep. A more detailed history about the Memorial will be available at the Committee s booth on the 4th.
