Holy Communion is understood by Christian as being one of those ways. There are of course others, one of the most significant being in other people, particularly in the poor and the oppressed, in those on the margins of our society. In 1923 at a Conference of the Anglo-Catholic movement, the Bishop of Zanzibar, Frank Weston delivered a stirring final address. While some of the imagery may not have stood the test of time its basic message about presence remains as relevant today as it was then. the one great thing that England needs to learn is that Christ is found in and amid matter Spirit through matter God in flesh, God in the Sacrament. But I say to you, and I say it to you with all the earnestness that I have, that if you are prepared to fight for the right of adoring Jesus in his Blessed Sacrament, then you have got to come out from before your Tabernacle and walk, with Christ mystically present in you, out into the streets of this country, and find the same Jesus in the people of your cities and your villages. You cannot claim to worship Jesus in the Tabernacle, if you do not pity Jesus in the slum..you have got your Mass, you have got your Altar, you have begun to get your Tabernacle. Now go out into the highways and hedges where not even the Bishops will try to hinder you. Go out and look for Jesus in the ragged, in the naked, in the oppressed and sweated, in those who have lost hope, in those who are struggling to make good. Look for Jesus. Gardeners Corner June 2014 By Alistair Peak PGS The verges are full of this plant, that indicates the fact that we are heading towards summer. It has very lacy flowers, a strong aroma and has many names from Keck, Queen Anne s Lace, Anthriscus Sylvestris and is commonly called Cow Parsley. Do enjoy it while it s out as many say this is a good tradition of the English countryside. You can t but notice that summer is here and for me, the hard work over the last 12 months will be coming to its full show, particularly in the flower borders. Do find the time to have a sit in your garden whether during the day or over the evening with the warmth of the sun (hopefully) and look at the colours or the wonderful scents we have from the plants. The evening light show plants off with a different light, sometimes they can take on a slightly unusual colour. Take time to wander around in the evening and see what light factors throw on your plants. Strawberries came in abundance last year, with the cold winter and spring, then followed by a wonderful warm summer. Keeping our fingers crossed that we will get a good crop this summer. Keeping the plants weed free along a good ground cover ie straw placed under them, will prevent the soil splashing up on the fruit. It is important to cover the strawberries to protect from birds, children and (even adults) pinching them! If we go through a hot dry period remember they will require watering but do not over water. Of course if they are being grown in pots or containers you will need to water and feed on a regular basis with a high potash feed eg Tomorite. Water features come in many different shapes, sizes and sounds and can provide wonderful interest to your gardens. If you do not have one and are thinking of adding some form to your garden, why not have a good look around the many garden centres to see what they have to offer. I would recommend that you listen to your chosen feature before you purchase as they all have different sounds from soft to harder sounds. If you already have a water feature remember to keep it topped up as both the sun and wind will empty it and put a strain on the pump. Alistair s Tip: The season for Open Gardens is upon us. It is always good to see what other people are doing in their gardens. Mow your lawns regularly and importantly keep them edged as this sets the borders off. 28 5

Led by Margaret and Brian on a bright sunny day with Spring very much in evidence we set off from Braybrooke and headed South West, eventually reaching Brampton Valley Way. We then travelled North on this for approx one mile before turning right on to another foot path taking us back to the start. A really lovely walk enjoyed by all. GREAT EASTON PARISH COUNCIL Annual risk assessment inspection of the village Monday 16th June. We intend to make our annual walkabout of the village on the evening of Monday 16th June. The purpose of this event is to make a general risk assessment of the village streets, paths, greens etc., and to see if there is anything which needs attention that hasn t otherwise been noticed. If anybody has anything of this nature that they would like to bring to our attention, please do let us know, either by mentioning it to any of the members of the parish council, or the clerk, David Gibley. Flowers outside the Sun Inn. For many years the flower tubs outside the Sun have been tended by Ann Wallis and that splash of colour there in season has delighted us we pass. She has now retired from this role and we would wish to thank her for her long service to the pleasure and amenity of the village. Dawn, our popular landlady at the Sun, has very kindly offered to take over this duty and at her own expense. We are very grateful to her for the public spirited gesture, as we are to her and Neil for the way in which the Inn has been rejuvenated by them and become such an asset to village life. 24 9
MEDBOURNE PARISH COUNCIL RECTORY FARM IN TIMES PAST Visit to Rectory Farm, Great Easton, on Saturday 21st June Please meet in the farm yard (entrance via top end of Lount's Crescent) at 2.30 p.m. The first part of our visit will comprise a visual presentation of Rectory Farm's history by farmer Phil Johnson, and this will be followed by a guided walk across the fields to appreciate the development of the landscape and its diverse wildlife. The tour will conclude back at the farm with refreshments kindly provided by Mrs Sue Johnson. The meeting held on Monday 12th May 2014 was the Annual Statutory Meeting, at which Cllr Paul Polito was confirmed as Chair of Medbourne Parish Council and Cllr Louise Pilkington confirmed as Vice Chair, continuing their roles for the coming year. Cllr Cory is now the Planning Representative and Cllr Gidley Wright taking on the responsibility of Village Hall Representative. The following items of interest to the village were discussed: Neighbourhood Plans: Medbourne Parish Council discussed the potential of a Neighbourhood Plan for the village. At this stage it was agreed that much more information was needed on the process and what the benefits would be. Councillors are to look in to this and pass on their thoughts to Cllr Cory who is the new Planning Representative. Any member of the public who has any views or thoughts on this are encouraged to email the Parish Clerk, Dan Ray with their views (pcmedbourne@gmail.com) and these shall be passed on to Cllr Cory. Accounts: The annual accounts for 2013/14 were approved by councillors. The Notice of Appointment of Date for the Exercise of Electors Rights is now displayed on the Parish Council notice board, advertising the annual audit of the Parish Council accounts. On Thursday 5th June our speaker will be Katherine Murphy who is editor of the John Lewis (Leicester ) in house weekly magazine which sets out to inform the partners (people working in the store ) about events, alterations, promotions etc. within the store. As many people do not even know of the existence of the Chronicle this should be a most interesting meeting so come along to find out all about what goes on behind the scenes in such a large store. Broadband Update: It has been confirmed that Medbourne is going to receive high speed broadband, with the rollout expected before the next Parish Council Meeting in June. It was noted that whilst this would be beneficial to many in Medbourne, with the exchange in the village centre, it is likely that the further away from the exchange, the slower the broadband speeds. Villages such as Ashley are likely to receive lower speeds, which relies on Medbourne s exchange, due to the distance from the exchange. The Royal Wedding Cake A Talk by its maker Fiona Cairns at Great Easton WI on Wednesday June 4 th in Great Easton Village Hall Guests 3.50, including a glass of wine and strawberries. Do come along! 12 As usual, May is our Resolutions meeting - this year being held in Medbourne with visitors from both Glooston and Hallaton WI's, about 40 of us in total. The Resolution this year, a bit of a forgone conclusion, was to make more people agree to organ donation and let their relatives know of their decisions. Apparently, every day, 3 people in this country die because they are on the organ transplantation register and they can't get an organ in time to save their life. One donor can give life to 9 people or, at least change their lives for the better. To date, the oldest recipient of retina donations was 104, even more surprising, it worked! One very important thing that came out of the meeting was the fact that you need to do more than just write your wishes in your Will - this after all is normally read after your funeral. If you are a donor, your decision needs to be known prior to your death so that your organs can be "kept fresh" for transplantation. Let all of your relatives know your wishes, let your doctor know your decision and even more importantly, register as a donor. Again, if you let your relatives know what you intend to do, try and get them to register as well! The refreshments that were provided were delicious and looked beautiful so, many, many thanks to all who provided something for the evening. More importantly, special thanks to all who helped in the kitchen and worked so tirelessly to make the evening such a special event. Blaston and District Agricultural Show Society Date for your diary - Blaston Show 2014 Plans for the 57 th Blaston Show being held on Sunday 29 th June 2014 are well underway. The Show s main ring displays will also include heavy horse displays, terrier racing, classic and vintage tractors and show jumping. There will be many equine events including gymkhanas, Equifest and BSPA qualifiers for hunters, cobs, riding, coloured horses and ponies, and mountain and moorland ponies, dressage and driven ponies. Judging will take place for a full range of cattle showing classes and the usual sheep showing will also be present. New attractions for 2014 includes a dancing diggers display and a side saddle display. The many other attractions will include children's fair rides, trade stands, rural crafts, a licensed bar and food outlets, a modern farming display, dog showing and a hound show. In line with the Society s objectives to continue to develop the show, a new flower arranging demonstration will be held in the craft tent and in the main ring there will be an opportunity to watch the terrier racing and the tug of war competition. Visitors will also be entertained by the Harborough band once more! The 57 th Show will be held once again on the Blaston Road showground which is located between the villages of Blaston and Slawston in Leicestershire. All money raised from the Show will be donated to a variety of local charities, including our main recipient for this year, the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance. We have several events to look out for in the coming year, details will be given as soon as these are finalized so, please watch this space! Bringhurst Primary School Summer is here and everything on the planet and more seems to be coming to Bringhurst Primary School. Already since the Easter break, which was heralded by our first ever and very successful Easter service in St Andrew s Church, Great Easton, it has been non-stop activity at our school. The Rutland Rouleurs have been visiting to train up our Year 5 and Year 6 pupils on their cycling skills - not just as an environmentally friendly way of getting back and forward to school safely but also to broaden children s horizons as to the joys of cycling. Our Gardening Club has been digging, planting and weeding for England with parent helpers leading the way with our lunchtime gatherings of eager gardeners. There are great plans for developing our outside areas to make them even more appealing and diverse in their opportunity and use. Perhaps we will soon be providing plants to sell at the ever popular PTA Plant Fair which this year took place on Saturday 10 th May and was again a resounding success. There will be an active programme of sports for all the children to participate in throughout the hopefully hot, sunny days ahead. Already our swimmers and tennis players have taken a successful part in their Rutland Primary Schools Partnership events and there is much more to come in the form of cricket, rounders, orienteering and multi-skills as well as our own whole school Sports Day and Mini-Olympics for KS1 children. Our Year 5 children are soon to embark on an Arts-History project based on the Luttrell Psalter which dates back to 1330. The project will involve the children learning about this historic document which reveals much about life in medieval times and working with crafts people on calligraphy, paper making, book making, babewyn designs, medieval music and dance. We are hugely grateful to NADFAS and Rutland DFAS for their sponsorship of this exciting project the outcomes of which we hope to exhibit in the local community. In addition to our essential annual appointment with end of year national assessments the children will be able to enjoy trips to places such as The Tower of London, Foxton Locks, Think Tank Birmingham, The National Gallery, London, Twycross Zoo, Rolls Royce JET project for schools and a performance of The Gruffalo at The Curve Theatre, Leicester. Year 5 children have recently returned from their residential break at Condover Hall, Shropshire and our Year 6 children will shortly be following in their footsteps. A great time will be had by all we are sure. So for a small rural primary school we do get around a bit and are not too confined to our quarter of this green and pleasant land. We are very much looking forward to the return visit of our friends from Uplands School in the centre of Leicester. We are sure they will enjoy the green space of our very lovely outdoors. One of the key highlights of the summer term - alongside our Year 4 s performance on their brass instruments at De Montfort Hall in late June, the Year 6 transition visits to UCC, and the plethora of traditional end of school year events will be the arrival of The National Festival Circus to Bringhurst! More details are available on the school website: www.bringhurst.leics.sch.uk On Saturday 14 th June, combined with our PTA annual Summer Fete, we are very much welcoming one and all from near and far to come to our school and enjoy the thrills, the spills and the excitement of this unique event so please do not miss this opportunity. And when the summer break arrives and we sit back in our deck chairs with our sunglasses on sipping a glass of something cold we ll wonder what all the fuss was about.
