N.O.Y.G.C - 130 Years Old This year marks the 130 th birthday of the golf club which was first played on the Udny Links as a 9 hole course back in 1888. The club has come a long way since then and I am sure members and visitors alike would agree that we now have a fantastic set up and challenging 18 hole Golf Course to be proud of. Keep your eyes and ears open this year as we hope to be able to mark another landmark birthday with a members event. -----ooo----- NEW FACES AROUND THE CLUB We have some new faces around the club this season. Oliver Phillip has now left the Golf club, in his capacity as shop assistant, after finishing University and finding new full-time employment at the new Marks & Spencer s food store in Bridge of Don. You will still see Oliver around from time to time as he has indicated that he will help in the shop when holiday cover is required. We have 2 new members of Staff now in Calum & Scott Cumming who will work at the weekends. Calum and Scott are nearing the end of their schooling before moving into further education. This will give them good experience in a working environment. They will also be ably assisted, time to time, by Louise Lorimer, who also works in the bar. Please take time to introduce yourself to them before you head out for a game on a weekend. Page 2
MEMBERSHIP INTRODUCTION We have a had a good uptake on the Introduce a friend membership scheme so far this season. At the 16 th, some of the gorse has been removed from the front portion short of the green and the bunker at the back has been reshaped. Preferred Lies are also now in operation until the end of April. Upcoming Events The season proper kicks off on Saturday March 24 th with the Lifeboat Shield. We wish everyone a successful season here at Newburgh Golf Club. There are several things happening on the Golf Course during the months of April and May. We host the nonqualifiers at the Aberdeenshire Coast Championships on April 12 th. This is a new event to the North East where players take part over 3 days at Murcar, Cruden Bay and Fraserburgh to try and reach the final stages at Trump International. We have a Texas Scramble Open Tournament on April 15 th followed quickly by our first Seniors Open on April 19 th. Also, on Sunday April 29 th, we are hosting the North East District Phillips Trophy at the club. This is a 36 hole event. We are delighted to have been asked to host such an event at our club. Don t despair our stalwart Sunday golfers though. Our Club Manager, Paul, has negotiated a Newburgh Away Day Medal at Oldmeldrum golf club for the same morning. Details of this event can be found on the Gents notice board. In May we have our Spring Open on the 5 th and our Mixed Open Greensomes on the 13 th. Booking for both these opens can be done by visiting the website or calling the shop. Page 6
We also have the First Round of the Club Championship on May 26 th. The Buchan Senior men visit the club on May 17 th. This is always a very busy and successful day with around 180+ seniors taking part from all over the Buchan area. Our Seniors Section are again jetting off to Sunnier climes when they visit Vilamoura, Portugal, for a week at the end of April. We continue to get good visitor numbers from both home and abroad. We have a good few visiting parties booked in for the next couple of months. This brings good revenue to the club and we should make them all feel welcome when they visit. We have new visitor cards in operation where visiting golfers can score their experience and make comments. So far this has been a success with an average over 9+ out of 10 being scored to date. Social Golf We are introducing a few Friday Night Social golf evenings this Season to encourage people along to meet other likeminded members and get 9 holes of golf. This will be open to Ladies and Gents. The first of these will be on April 20 th between 16.45 and 17.45 and will take the form of a Mixed Texas Scramble. Do not despair if you don t have a handicap, you will get allocated one on the night for the purposes of the fun competition. May s edition will be a Mixed Stableford on the 18 th of the Month. Hopefully this will be a success and bring members, new and old together. Page 7
