Junior Summer Sailing Program Program Dates: June 25 August 2, 2018 Thank you for your interest in the BYC Junior Summer Sailing Program. We look forward to a FUN and SAFE summer on the water with your sailors. This brochure outlines the programs offered at the Balboa Yacht Club. There is no better way to spend your summer by sailing on the beautiful waters of Newport Beach! All students will be expected to take a swim test on the first day of the program. Finally, all students must wear a Coast Guard approved personal flotation device (PFD or lifejacket) at all times. It is the mission of the Balboa Yacht Club sailing department to promote fair and safe sailing, instill a life-long love of our sport, and above all, to keep it fun. Please register online at www.balboayachtclub.com prior to the May 15 deadline. There is limited space available in each class, so make sure to register early. Class fees cannot be prorated, and no refunds will be offered after June 15. Beginner Sabots SABOT SAILING CLASSES 8-10 years old SCHEDULE: MON-THURS 9 AM -12 PM MEMBER COST: $750 NON-MEMBER COST: $950 Youths with little to no previous sailing experience learn to sail a Sabot. This class is designed to give the sailor a strong fundamental base of sailing skills such as rigging, points of sail, basic boat handling, water safety, and seamanship. The overall goal is to help the sailor get comfortable sailing solo in varying conditions and becoming proficient sailing the Sabot. As the sailor gains more confidence sailing the Sabot they will advance through the group until they are ready to move up to the Intermediate Sabot class. *Sailors must own their own boat. Contact Adrienne (juniors@balboayachtclub.com) if you need assistance finding a Sabot. Intermediate Sabots 8-12 years old Intermediate Sabots are for those sailors that have successfully completed Beginner Sabots or equivalent. In this class, the sailors will be introduced to the basics of sailboat racing. Specific skills include upwind sailing, general sail trim on all points of sail, and the basic concepts of boat speed. This class prepares sailors to move up to our Sabot Race team. *Sailors must own their own Sabot. SCHEDULE: MON-THURS 9 AM-12 PM MEMBER COST: $750 NON-MEMBER COST: $950 Sabot C3 Race Team 9-12 years old This class is for sailors who want to move forward in the racing scene and want to build on the racing knowledge they have acquired thus far. Sailors will learn more about the racing rules, racing tactics and strategy, and an emphasis on advanced boat handling. This class is designed to help sailors become avid and enthusiastic racers. Sailors will attend weekly Balboa Bay Fleet races as well as optional weekend regattas. Prerequisite- Completion of Intermediate Sabots or equivalent. SCHEDULE: MON-THURS 1 PM -4:30 PM MEMBER COST: $850 NON-MEMBER COST: $1050 Sabot Race A, B, C1, C2 SCHEDULE: MON-THURS 10 AM-4:30 PM MEMBER COST: $950 NON-MEMBER COST: $1100 9-16 years old The Sabot Race team (Sabot C2, C1, B, A) is the most advanced Sabot program for youth sailors. The main emphasis of this racing team is to further develop the sailor s understanding of the intricacies of rigging and tuning, controls of the boat, using body weight with sail trim to optimize boat speed, starting, and mastering of the Racing Rules of Sailing. Sportsmanship, teamwork, and work ethic are the key component to the Sabot Race Team. Sailors will team race. Sailors will attend weekly Balboa Bay Fleet races in addition to weekend regattas. All sailors are expected to compete at the Sabot National Championship at the end of the summer program.

DOUBLE-HANDED & GROUP SAILING CLASSES Sea Urchins 6-7 years old This class is designed to introduce young children to sailing through fun and play. Students will sail in a 20-foot Harbor 20 sailboat, CFJ, and other boats with other children in their class and their instructor. The class is a fun introduction to sailing with the goal of having students become comfortable in small boats. This class will consist of sailing on the water, sailing arts and crafts, and sailing land games. Specific skills covered in this class are basic concepts of finding the wind direction, points of sail, steering, water safety, and seamanship. We will allow 5-year-olds to participate given specific criteria. Please contact Adrienne directly (juniors@balboayachtclub.com) if you have a 5-year-old interested in this class. SCHEDULE: MON-THURS 9:00 AM-12:00 PM Session 1: June 25-July 12 Session 2: July 16-August 2 Per session MEMBER COST: $450 Per session NON-MEMBER COST: $550 Beginner CFJ 11-17 years old This class is for older sailors who are learning how to sail sailors or who have outgrown the Sabot in either Intermediate Sabots or Sabot Race. This class uses the Club FJ, a 14-foot boat sailed by a two-person team. Beginner CFJ focuses on boat handling, including roll tacking, acceleration, spinnaker basics, and general sail trim on all points of sail. Sailors will be introduced to the basic concepts of racing, but the primary focus will be to establish the fundamentals of boat handling. *BYC provides the CFJ boats. SCHEDULE: MON-THURS 9:00 AM-12:00 PM MEMBER COST: $900 NON-MEMBER COST: $1150 CFJ Race 12-17 years old This class is for dedicated racers who want to take their CFJ sailing to the next level. They will be expected to compete in several regattas (CFJ Nationals and BBF weekly races) throughout the summer. Racers will learn advanced sailing techniques pertaining to the CFJ and will learn to fly spinnaker. *BYC provides the CFJ boats *Must have a minimum of 6 sailors enrolled to hold the class SCHEDULE: MON-THURS 1:00-4:30 PM MEMBER COST: $1050 NON-MEMBER COST: $1250 Waterman Adventures SCHEDULE: MON-THURS 1:00-4:00 PM Per Session MEMBER COST: $400 Per Session NON-MEMBER COST: $500 Session 1: June 25-July 5 (no class July 4) Session 2: July 9-July 20 Session 3: July 23-August 2 12-17 years old Not everyone likes sailing alone or has a strong desire to race, so the waterman sailing adventure class offers the perfect solution. The focus of this class is to have the most fun possible while encouraging sportsmanship on the water. Juniors will participate in destination sails around the bay, get exercise paddle boarding and kayaking, knot tying, and learn basic seamanship skills. There is no racing component to this class. *BYC provides the Harbor 20 boats, CFJs, Paddle Boards, and Kayaks*6 waterman minimum required to hold the class

High School Sailing BOOTCAMP eighth grade - seniors This class is for dedicated sailors who want to take their CFJ sailing to the next level. The coaches will help the sailors become confident going into their High School Sailing Team tryouts and prepare those returning high school sailors for the upcoming fall season. *BYC provides the CFJ boats *Must have a minimum of 8 sailors enrolled to hold the class SCHEDULE: August 10 & 11 (1:00-4:00 PM) CLASS COST: $200 Club 420 Race Team 13-17 years old SCHEDULE: MON-THURS 12:30-4:30 PM MEMBER COST: $1200 NON-MEMBER COST: $1300 This class is designed for those dedicated sailors who have had previous sailing experience in the Club 420 and have desire to race in regional regattas (Jr. Olympic Festival and weekly BBF races). If your sailor is interested in out of state summer regattas, contact Jr. Sailing Director for more details. *BYC provides the Club 420 boats Club 420 Travel Race Team 13-17 years old Sailors interested in this class must email Junior Sailing Director to get approval to register for this team. Sailors must be confident sailing in the ocean. Requirement- must attend at least 1 local regatta and 1-4 out of state travel regattas. *BYC provides the brand-new Club 420s (PS2000 boats) *Must have a minimum of 6 sailors enrolled and paid in full to hold the class SCHEDULE: 12:15-4:30 PM June 25-28, July 2-5 (no class July 4), July 13-15 MEMBER COST: $600 NON-MEMBER COST: $750

Awards Banquet The Awards Banquet for the end of the summer will be on August 3 at 6:00pm. Adult tickets will be available for purchase in July. In order to secure registration for the 2018 BYC Junior Summer Sailing Program, the following must be completed: (a) Online program registration and payment (b) Wavier of Liability Form (c) Personal Health and Medical Information Form (including Parent/Guardian Emergency Treatment Authorization) (d) BYC Disciplinary Procedure Form These documents (which require original signatures) may be downloaded from our website, www.balboayachtclub.com (under Youth Sailing, Junior Programs) and should be mailed or emailed (juniors@balboayachtclub.com) to the BYC Sailing Office in order to complete your program registration.
