After a perfect preseason, defeating British Columbia at home and Western Washington on the road, Seattle U travels to Charleston, S.C. for the Nike/Aaron Olitsky Soccer Classic hosted by the College of Charleston to open the regular season. Scouting College of Charleston: The College of Charleston was picked to finish eighth of nine in the Colonial Athletic Association preseason poll after posting a 4-11-1 overall and 2-4-1 conference record in 2013. The Cougars return leading scorer, Xavier Rajpaul as well as two of three goalkeepers who saw action last season in Alex Young and Ryan McLaughlin. Scouting Furman University: The Paladins were picked to finish first in the Southern Conference s preseason poll and four earned preseason All-SoCon honors including Bobby Edet, Tyler Peoples, Dylan Rowe, and Sven Lissek. Furman posted an 11-5-2 record in 2013, recording victories over nationally-ranked Xavier, Elon, and Clemson. Head coach Doug Allison is in his 20th year at the helm and was named NSCAA South Region Coach of Year in 2013. Seattle U Chosen as Preseason WAC Title Winners: In a vote by the league s 10 head coaches, the Redhawks were picked to repeat their 2014 WAC men s socer championship from just a season ago. They received seven of nine first place votes cast, leading with a total 76 points. Kyle Bjornethun represented the Redhawks on the Preseason All-WAC Team. UConn Match to Be Broadcast on NSCAATV: Seattle U s home men s soccer match vs. UConn on Sunday, Sept. 14 will be broadcast on NSCAATV. Utah Valley 17 head coach PETER FEWING 21st season/washington 84 Pete Fewing begins his third year as head coach of the men s soccer team in Division I play and 21stseason overall at Seattle U. The 2013 campaign was one of the most successful in program history as Fewing was named Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, taking the Redhawks from an 0-6-1 start to winning both the WAC Regular Season and Tournament titles. With the tournament win, the team became Seattle U s first men s team to qualify for an NCAA DI tournament since March 1969 and the first to win an NCAA DI tournament game since March 1964 with a 2-1 come-from-behind First Round win at Creighton on Nov. 21. He helped develop both senior forward Miguel Gonzalez, named WAC Offensive Player of the Year, and senior goalkeeper Jake Feener, who led the nation in DI saves and saves per game throughout the entire 2013 season. Fewing was the head coach of the Seattle University men s soccer team from 1988 through the 2005 season, when he accumulated a record of 220-125-26 (.628) during his 18 seasons at the helm. He led Seattle U to the 1997 NAIA National Championship and the 2004 NCAA Division II National Championship. Most recently, Fewing was the head coach of the Kitsap Pumas of the Professional Development League (PDL) in 2010 and 2011, helping the Pumas win the 2011 PDL National Championship. He co-authored the book Coaching Principles for Development of Championship Teams, and he has been an analyst during the television broadcasts of Seattle Sounders FC matches. Fewing was named NAIA National Coach of the Year in 1997 and NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year in 2004. He earned regional coach of the year honors five times and Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) coach of the year recognition three times. He guided the men s soccer program through the transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II, posting a 73-24-3 (.745) record in five seasons at the NCAA Division II level. College Sports Madness Names Preseason All-WAC Teams: CSM named Ian Hines-Ike and Kyle Bjornethun to the Preseason First Team and Hamza Haddadi and Shane Mahvi to the Preseason Second Team. Head coach Pete Fewing was also named Preseason WAC Coach of the Year. In With the New: The Redhawks will face two new conference opponents in 2014 as Utah Valley adds a men s soccer program for the first time and Incarnate Word joins the Western Athletic Conference as an affiliate member for men s soccer. WAC Tournament: The 2014 WAC Tournament will be hosted by Seattle U at Championship Field on Nov. 13-14, 16. At the conclusion of the six-team tournament, the winner will receive the league s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. 2013 Recap: Seattle U won the WAC regular season and tournament titles with an undefeated WAC record. SU made program history with the team s first NCAA Division I tournament appearance and win. The win at Creighton on Nov. 21 marked the first Redhawk men s team to win an NCAA DI tournament game since men s basketball on Mar. 14, 1964. At the end of the season, the team earned a spot at No. 25 in the men s DI Top Drawer Soccer Top 25 poll. Jake Feener led the nation in total saves and saves per game. Head coach Pete Fewing was named WAC Coach of the Year, Miguel Gonzalez was named WAC Offensive Player of the Year, and Kyle Bjornethun was named WAC Freshman of the Year. SU led all teams with five All- Conference honorees including Feener, Gonzalez, and Ian Hines-Ike on the first team and Bjornethun and Bobby Segal on the Second Team. Gonzalez led the league in nearly every recordable offensive 2014 Redhawk men s Soccer category including shots, points, goals, and game-winning goals. Feener, Gonzalez, Hines-Ike, and Bjornethun were named to the WAC All-Tournament Team while Feener was named MVP. Michael Roberts was named Capital One Academic All-District First Team, NCAA Division I District VIII. 2013 was the Redhawks first year in the WAC after the league reinstated men s soccer for the first time since 1999.
