Game #22, Home Game #12 - Thursday, April 28th - Durham Bulls Athletic Park - 7:05 p.m. Louisville Bats (10-8) vs. Durham Bulls (10-11) RHP Josh Smith (2-1, 0.50) vs. RHP Matt Andriese (1-2, 4.03) Thursday s Game Durham continues a six-game homestand with the second game of a three-game series against Louisville. Durham lost the first series of the homestand 2-1 to Indianapolis. The Bulls host Louisville next from 4/27-4/29, then play the Indians and Bats on the road from 4/30-5/4 before their first off day of the season on 5/5. About Yesterday Eddie Gamboa went 4.2 IP with 4 SO in his first start as a Bull and Durham spread 8 H, but took a 6-2 loss to Louisville in the series opener. It was the Bulls first loss in a series opener this season. Nick Franklin homered and Taylor Motter had a double in the loss. Roster Move On 4/27, RHP Kyle McPherson was transferred to Extended Spring Training from Durham, and LHP Justin Marks was reassigned to Durham from Charlotte. This will be Marks first action with the Bulls, but he has played 62 games in Triple-A for the Kansas City, Oakland, Texas and Arizona organizations. Ks Keep Coming The Bulls pitching staff has struck out 208 batters through 21 G, now holding a lead of 30 SO more than the next best IL team. In April 2015, the Bulls pitching staff had 143 SO in 22 G. Matt Andriese s 26 SO are the 4th most in the IL this season. Durham pitchers have led the IL in total strikeouts each of the past four seasons, including a league record 1,246 in 2013. Premier Pitching Staff Austin Pruitt s 11.51 SO/9 IP rate is 3rd in the International League. Pruitt is also 2nd in the league in total SO with 29 and Matt Andriese is 4th with 26, while Jaime Schultz is T-5th at 25 SO. Out of the bullpen, Ryan Garton has the 4th best SO/9 IP rate among relievers at 13.97. Finding His Stroke Daniel Robertson is riding an 8 G hitting streak in which he has raised his batting average 64 points. His only extra-base hit during that span is 1 2B, but he is hitting.321 with 5 R, 3 BB and 7 SO over his last 8 G. Cleanup Cornerstone Richie Shaffer has been a consistent bat from the cleanup spot so far in 2016, with a.290 BA through his first 20 G. He has gotten on base in 17 of those 20 G, and has a.410 OBP with 14 BB (league-high). He has only batted out of the fourth spot in the lineup, but has split time between 1B, 3B, RF and DH. Shaffer also leads the team with 6 2B, 2 HR, 15 RBIs and a.873 OPS. Digging Out Of A Rut The Bulls batters hit 18 for 94 (.191) in their last series. They hit.301 in 2015 against the Bats, and went 8 for 32 (.250) in yesterday s series opener. Trying To Start Fresh The Bulls committed a season-high 3 errors in Tuesday s game, and had 7 errors in the three-game series against Indianapolis. They also committed one error yesterday against Louisville, and have at least 1 error in each of the last five games. First Taste of Triple-A Seven players (28%) on the Bulls roster have never appeared in a regular season Triple-A game prior to 2016: Garton, Leonard, Pruitt, Robertson, Sappington, Schultz and Varona. The batters (Leonard, Robertson and Varona) are led by Dayron Varona s.260-1-10 (13-50), which includes 4 2B and 5 R. The pitchers (Garton, Pruitt, Sappington and Schultz) have combined for 61.1 IP in 20 G (8 GS), 4 W, 2 S, 56 H, 28 R (20 ER), 7 HR, 14 BB, 73 SO, a 1.14 WHIP and a 2.93 ERA. Feeling At Home On Base Kyle Roller has gotten on base in 14 straight games. He is hitting.273 during that stretch, with 11 BB and a.429 OBP since 4/9. Of his 12 H, 2 are HR and 2 are doubles. He has scored 6 of the 24 times (1 HBP) he has been on base in that span. Series With Louisville Durham won its season series against Louisville 6-3 in 2015, including 2-1 record at the DBAP. The Bats swept their most recent series, a three-gamer at Norfolk, outscoring their opponents 20-3. Bulls batters hit.301 off of Bats pitchers, and had the ERA advantage 3.30 to 6.49. They also outscored Louisville 57 to 31. Top Prospects 7 of the 25 players (28%) on the Bulls roster appear on the MLB.com top 30 prospects list for the Rays organization: No. 1 Blake Snell, No. 7 Daniel Robertson, No. 11 Richie Shaffer, No. 13 Chih-Wei Hu, No. 19 Jaime Schultz, No. 22 Taylor Motter, and No. 24 Andrew Bellatti. How They Stack Up Durham has left 139 runners on base in 2016, while Louisville has left 140 runners on base. The Bats are hitting.273, the T-2nd best average in the IL, compared to the Bulls leagueworst.230. The Bulls have struck out 191 times (2nd-most), but Louisville has only struck out 133 times (2nd-fewest).
