SPORT Tennis vs Cranbrook All teams played impressive tennis last weekend against Cranbrook. Our Boys were simply better in all aspects of the game in the Round 3 matchup. By day s end we had won 80 % of the matches contested. The 1st 1V set the tone early in the day with a relatively hard-fought 5-3 win over their Eastern suburbs opponents. The first doubles pairing of Dario Kmet (10Ke) and Mathew Nedanovski (10Fo) once again asserted dominance over their less able opponents to lay the winning foundations. The 2nds doubles pairing struggled early but were unable to covert any of their sets to a win. However, to their credit, they improved their percentages as the match progressed. In the Singles we won 3 from 4 with the highlight being the win by Brendan Sleiman (12St), who maintained his composure to outlast his opponent. The 2nd 1V had a pleasing result with their 6 sets to 2 triumph over a spirited Cranbrook outfit. All team members displayed moments of individual brilliance, but it was the team work aspect that was the most rewarding part of the proceedings. In other news I had the pleasure of awarding the winners and runners up from last term s School Tennis Championships. These trophies were presented at Quad assembly during the week, well done to all recipients! Jeremy Dykgraaff MIC Tennis Copyright Trinity Grammar School 2018. All Rights Reserved. 1 of 6
School Tennis Championship winners and runners up. 3rds and 4ths The 3rds and the 4ths both registered decisive victories over Cranbrook. While Jason Quach (12Ke), Matthew Herro (12WH) and Alexander Scott (11St) of the 3rds all enjoyed commendable singles wins, it was the fact that we secured both doubles games that was especially pleasing. I hope this is a sign of things to come. The 4ths did not drop a set, and Jordan Chen (11We) and Nathan Nakhle (11Ke) were in particularly dominant form, crushing their opponents 6-0. The 4ths have had a brilliant start to the season, and look to be the team to beat. Provided the boys keep hammering their first serves and working on their volleys, and don t succumb to complacency, they can look forward to many more successes in the weeks ahead. Ash Lucas 3rds and 4ths Coach 10A and 10Bs Trinity 10As tennis continued their outstanding performance with a 6 sets to 0 clean sweep, only losing 5 games. With Alexander Valiozis (10Yo) missing, Justin Sleiman (10Ta) stepped up to the A1 position showing what a mature player he has developed into, having to play his singles first due to the opposition having a player running late, he had to come from behind, eventually winning 6 games to 4. Jonathon Karagiannis (10Hi) paired up with Lachlan Sleiman (10St), winning their doubles easily 6-0. Disappointingly, Jonathan missed out on playing his singles due to his opponent not Copyright Trinity Grammar School 2018. All Rights Reserved. 2 of 6
turning up. Lachlan stepped up from the 10Bs to play number 4 in the 10As; he also out classed his opponent 6-1 with some solid ground strokes and good serving. Aidan Tharamarajah (10WH) missing out on a doubles match due to one Cranbrook player not turning up, made quick work of his singles opponent 6-0 again making some big forehand winners and some good solid serving. Trinity 10Bs had an equally strong win against Cranbrook, also winning with a 6 sets to 0 clean sweep, only losing 5 games. Jack Opperman (10Ta) and Dominic Lay (10St) teamed up again, demonstrating what a good combination they make, winning 6-1. Both Jack and Dominic punished their opposition with their huge serves and deadly volleys. Ritvik Dinesh (10Ke) teamed up with Munashe Mushangazhike (10WJ) who stepped up from the 10Cs for the day. They formed a good combination, winning 6-1. Both Ritvik and Munashe showed their dominance by both going on to win their singles 6-0. Michael Leadbeatter 10As and 10Bs Coach 9As and 9Bs Last week the year 9As and Bs faced Cranbrook in a tough battle at home. The As, in a great show of tennis, came out on top winning 4 sets to 2. In particular, A1 Tom Jin (9Yo) was able to dominate his seemingly level opponent winning 6-1. A3 Tom Thorpe (9Sc) also showed his expertise on the court with some good fight to hold on 7-5. The Bs unfortunately didn t see the same success as the As, but this still didn t hamper the quality of tennis with some fine shots in the singles especially. Most games went to at least deuce and this is a credit to the determination of the boys. All in all, it was a well-contested match for both teams and I wish them the best of luck in the future. Kevin Batliwala 9As and 9Bs Coach 8As and 8Bs This week, in Round 3 of the CAS competition, the Trinity boys were up against Cranbrook. After battling through the mid-morning traffic, the boys arrived in the East ready for battle. The As were looking to return to their winning form after a tough loss the week before, but this wasn't made easy as the boys came up against an old friend an ex-trinitarian in Cranbrook's A2 position. He and his partner faced Deon Kontonis (8Fo) and Kevin Lin (8Sc) in the doubles, where Cranbrook raced to a 5-1 lead. However, the tenacious spirit of our boys allowed them to fight back to tie things up at 5-5. The fairy-tale wasn't meant to be, though, as our boys went down 6-7 in a very tight tie-breaker. As this occurred, a flamboyant Emmanuel Grogan (8Fo) and a rampaging Jim Gong (8Ar) exhibited exemplary co-operation to win 6-4 with a clinical performance from both boys, levelling the scores as we headed into the singles. Jim got right to work, continuing on from his impressive doubles effort to Copyright Trinity Grammar School 2018. All Rights Reserved. 3 of 6
blitz his opponent in a 6-0 breeze. Despite this great start, Cranbrook were too strong, as they won the other singles fixtures, where Deon lost 4-6, Kevin went down in a 6-7 epic and Emmanuel was outplayed 2-6. The boys were therefore defeated 2-4, a very tight loss that will motivate them to work hard for next week's bout. It was another exhilarating performance from the Bs on Saturday, a continuation of their triumphant quest to CAS stardom. There was no mucking about as Liam Ling (8La) and Daniel Tran (8Ta) dominated 6-0 in the doubles, while it was a very similar story for Luka Saxena (8He) and Justin Yang (8WH), who were clinical in their 6-2 victory. Against a tough Cranbrook side, this was very impressive to watch. Time came for the singles, and so too for more outstanding tennis. Liam used his ferocious forehand to rattle his opponent and get up 6-3; Justin's pin-point precision granted him a huge 6-0 victory and Luka's power was too much as he got the job done 6-2. Dan, however, was unlucky to lose 2-6 in his match. This means that the Bs got yet another win, cruising to a 5-1 victory that has set them up in a very comfortable top position on the ladder as they remain undefeated. Harrison Gai 8As and 8Bs Coach 7As and 7Bs The 7 A Trinity tennis team continued their dominance over the weekend against an under-strength Cranbrook. However, one of their players not showing up allowed us a 2 set up advantage without even hitting a ball. Martin Wong (7Ta) playing his singles first up, won the match quite convincingly 6-2. With his strong serves and ground strokes, the Cranbrook A2 did not stand a chance. Matthew Nicolas (7Ke) played a fantastic set of singles, but unfortunately he eventually went down 4-6. An impressive singles match was played by Joshua Alha (7Ho). Even though he was behind for the majority of the match, he never gave up and was rewarded with a 7-6 (7-5) victory. In the 7 Bs James Hardiman (7Sc) once again showed his class against someone of the same ability by taking out his set 7-5. Another strong effort was registered by Justin Wang (7WJ) who played some good tennis. However, he was just not consistent enough for the Cranbrook B4, unfortunately going down 0-6. The player of the day for the B team has to go to Logan Ng (7WJ) for winning his first singles match of the season. In an epic battle he showed some fine tennis, beating his opponent 7-5. At the end of the day all boys showed great class and sportsmanship. Both the A and B teams won 4 sets to 2.
