PST TEST PARTICIPATION SKILLS AND TECHNIQUES Objectives: 1. The student will demonstrate his/her familiarity, through a written test, of the 5 components of physical fitness, i.e. cardio respiratory endurance (CR), muscular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, and body composition. 2. The student will demonstrate his/her level of fitness through physical testing and meet requirements set by the State Core. Check requirements on the following page. 3. Each student is required to demonstrate skill performance through skills testing. These sports and skills are listed on the next page for your selection. 4. For the sports each individual has chosen, a demonstration of knowledge in a written test format of the rules, game strategy, and terminology pertaining to the specific sport is required. 5. For the skills and written exam the sports are the same. You must choose: two team sports, two individual sports. Your skills and knowledge will be tested on the sports you ve selected. Instructions: 1. Familiarize yourself with this packet. 2. Research and develop a personal knowledge of physical fitness. Make sure you understand the five components of physical fitness i.e. cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition. 3. Be prepared to take a battery of written and skills tests pertaining to physical fitness. See tests requirements on the following page. 4. Train for the physical testing. 5. Study and become very familiar with information for the written test on physical fitness. 6. Select the sports that you would like to demonstrate mastery in. See skills that are required for testing on the following page. 7. Research and develop knowledge of each of the sports you have selected. Make sure you understand the terminology, skills specific to the sport, and game strategies. You can select several ways to research: internet web sites or books from your local library or your own personal library. See terminology requirements for each sport in the following pages. 8. Be willing to demonstrate your skill development and knowledge in a physical and skills test format, passing the written at 80%. 1

RESEARCH AND STUDY GUIDELINES The following information is a guideline for study and research. It is important that you use the books of internet websites that are available to you to better understand your topic choices. The books are available at your public library. An internet search is an important tool and probably your best option. When researching on the internet use a reliable search engine like Google, Ask, or Yahoo. Begin with a brief search statement: i.e. simplified rules soccer. Use this statement for any of the sports you intend on researching. SKILLS TEST Skill tests must also be passed on the same sports as selected for the written tests. In order to pass the skill portions of the test, students will be required to pass two out of the three skills on the selected team and individual sports. Team Sport Skills Football: Volleyball: Basketball: Softball: Soccer: tuck, pass, catch overhand serve, set, bump pass dribble, pass, shoot throw, catch, hit dribble, trap, throw-in Individual Sports Skills Racquet Sports: grip, forehand stroke, backhand stroke, serve Bowling: grip, approach, release (follow through) Golf: grip, address, swing, follow through FITNESS TEST REQUIREMENTS/STANDARDS The Fitness Test Requirements/Standards are taken from Presidential, National Standards, and Cooper Institution. See the following chart for testing criteria. Students must pass three of the four. WRITTEN TEST Each student testing will need to do research for the written physical fitness test. Study the five important components of physical fitness: cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition. Make sure you understand the acronym F.I.T.T. s it applies to the components of physical fitness. The choices are found on page 4 of this packet. A study guide can be found on the pages following. Students are strongly encouraged to use this to aide them in research of their chosen sports. GRADING Students will be notified of their results, following the test. The test results are graded on a Credit or No Credit basis. Results will be emailed to the student and also the student s counselor. If they do not pass the test, it will be recommended that the student register for the class, if space is available. Consult with the student s school counselor for academic career planning. Demonstrated Competency Assessments may be taken only once per school year per test subject taken. 5
