December 2017 JULIE S JIVE The Richard (Dick) Wortiska Memorial bench purchased from the Memorial Fund is located right next to the Donny Steffens Memorial bench on the Mountain Bay Trail. They are located 1.3 miles west from 900 Lakeview Drive (the start of the trail) or 100 yards east from another entrance to the trail across from 1357 Cardinal Lane. The seasonal downhill-ski marketing campaign has come to an end. To promote downhill skiing activities for the upcoming season, there are a bunch of us who go on tour. So if you attended the Warren Miller Film, you would have found ski clubs, a ski patrol table, mid-west hills selling lift tickets, and vendors who are selling downhill skis. We, as well as Sly Fox, are happy to be part of this touring group. That said, many thanks to our Marketer, Mary Halloin, and her organizational skills. We were visible at the Green Bay Farmers Market, the Warren Miller Film, Zeller s Annual Ski & Snowboard Consignment Sale, and the YMCA Ski & Sport Sale. Thank you also to everyone who manned tables and took the lead to set things up. Gelandesprung Gazette Going Downhill since 1969! www.gelandesprung.org P.O. Box 10422, Green Bay, WI 54307-0422 Surprisingly, there were quite a few people who didn t know there are ski clubs to join so spread the word. The New Fall Fashion Selection of Gelande gear is available and can be purchased by going on our website and finding the following link: Gelandesprung.org/Member Resources/Official Club Gear. Click on Always in Stitches and you will go directly to their website. It usually takes them about 2 weeks to produce the items asked for. Parking will now be available for all of our trips in 2 places. The Bar in Appleton and at The Woods in Green Bayhere we hold our Banquets and Board meetings). We are in need of a trip leader for our Mont Ripley/ Mount Bohemia mid-west trip. If you are interested, take a look at the website, Gelandesprung. org, under Member Resources. There is a comprehensive Trip Leader Guide that gives a great overview of what is involved. Please contact me at president@gelandespeung.org, or any other Board member if you are interested. As the trip leader, you will receive 50% off the price of the trip. It s a nightmare! Using ski straps, you can carry your skis and poles over your shoulder, just like a bag. They even feel lighter as the skis are vertically distributing the weight down your body. One of the major problems occurs when you pack your skis in carry ski bags, and they rattle around inside. This can easily cause de lamination of the ski surface, and in worst cases, can be a cause of fatigue damage on the ski, making it weak. So the next time you hit something not so soft, you may end up with two skis than one. The straps are basically used as a buffer, and the protective piece of material between skis prevents them from grinding against each other during bumpy mountain rides. Nowadays, ski straps come in all sorts of colors and attachments. The very simple ones are straps with additional provisions to tie your ski poles together. They are fastened with either Velcro strips or latches. Another popular variation has an additional strap attachment system that makes it super easy to sling on the shoulder. It is said that ski straps are just one of those things that you are better off having in your pocket just in case you need it, than seriously need it and not have it! Oh! One last thing, when you have attached your skis to your feet, you can easily fit the straps in your pocket or wear over your shoulder under your ski jacket. UPDATE YOUR WINTER GEAR Green Bay YMCA Ski & Sport Sale November 4, 2017 Sun Peaks Update: As you know, the sign-up period for Sun Peaks began early in August. The signups so far indicate strong interest in a trip to a new location with excellent skiing and the amenities for a great vacation. One item for considerations is purchase travel insurance for yourself. You can insure yourself for medical emergencies and also for travel problems or trip cancellation. One option for you to consider is through Travel Protectors LLC. This insurance is offered through our association with CMSC. Contact myra@travelprotectors. com. Winter Ski and Sport also offers travel insurance. Please review your situation to determine if you would like to purchase insurance.
