Graham Reynolds President s Pen They say bad news come in threes! Ladders AFTER ROUND 14 They say bad news comes in threes and it certainly has been the case over the last fortnight or so. Firstly we were shocked to hear of the sudden death of Piggy Benham, then last week we were saddened to hear of the passing of past player Allen Black who has been ill for some time, and then on Thursday, life member Greg Whelan has a serious heart attack in Chirnside Park Shopping Centre. Fortunately he was able to be revived and we last heard from son Andrew that he is making a recovery in the Box Hill Hospital. We had a memorial for Piggy in our clubrooms and our club was strongly represented at Allen s funeral last Monday. We also have a tribute to Allen on page 6 of this edition of the Flanker. I am sure I speak for everyone at the club when I say Get Well Soon to Greg Whelan, a champion bloke who always has a smile on his face. Let s hope that s all of the bad news. As you are aware, the vote count was held in the social rooms last Saturday after the last home and away game. Once again the presentation of the votes on the overhead created by Gerry Toohey was a huge success with the only hiccup in the night being the microphone failure due to dead batteries. I would like to pass on my personal congratulations to the winners in each grade. Kris Shore in the Seniors, Jamie Cruickshank in the Reserves and Sam Horsley in the Colts. I would also like to extend my congratulations Graeme Donald and the Junior Club on its outstanding season with a premiership to its credit. Wehave all the junior award winners for you in this edition of the Flanker. Finally, I would like to wish the Senior and Colts sides the best of fortunes in their respective second semi-finals at the East Burwood Reserve on Saturday 27 th August. The winners of these games go straight into the Grand Final and a crack at the flag and I am sure Simon and John will be doing all they can to make sure that their respective sides are best prepared for what will be their toughest challenge of the season so far. Graham. Page 2 The Flanker is prepared and edited by Gerald Toohey (aka Fathertoosa) email lilydale@efl.org.au Page 31

Vale Allen Black Everyone at the club was saddened to hear of the passing of past player and keen supporter Allen Black on 17 th August. He loved to come to the game and watch with his mates Graeme Shaw and Monty Phillips on the wing in front of the John Plante Pavilion. Allen has not been well for some time. Allen was a premiership captain in the Reserves at Lilydale and was born and lived in the town all his life. He had no desire to travel the world because he reckoned Lilydale was the best part of the world. He will be sadly missed. Allen s funeral was held last Monday at the Lilydale Uniting Church, of which he had been an active member all his life. A large crowd were in attendance including the Lilydale Fire Brigade of which Allen was also an active volunteer. The Lilydale Football and Cricket Clubs were well represented at the service with Allen being a life member of the Cricket Club which he captained to a premiership at the tender age of 19. The President, Committee, players and supporters of the Lilydale Football Club extend their deepest sympathy to his wife Dorothy, daughter Debbie, son Greg and all the family. Vice President in charge of merchandise Luke Ewart advises us that there is still some available for supporters to purchase especially with the finals coming up and the need to be flying the club colours. If you can t find Luke just ask at the bar and they will organise your purchase on the spot. Every sale assists the club with finances and the more our brand is seen out and about the better so why not update your wardrobe with our new look. See the complete range on the website. A Unique Award With all of the hype this year regarding the EFL 50 year celebrations, there have been a few service awards presented to very deserving recipients including our own Hector Cruickshank and Don Cruse who received their awards from EFL Chairman Graham Halbish on Anzac Day. Well a very special event happened last weekend when Don s daughter Sharon Nied also received one of the service awards for her involvement in the EFL football Sharon Nied, daughter of Don Cruse, receives fraternity for over 25 years. her service award last weekend from Rod She commenced her Cordwell, the EFL s Manager Junior Football involvement at the Lilydale Football Club in the early 1980s as manager of our canteen and running Thursday night teas as a teenage for several years. She now serves as the Secretary of the Ferntree Gully Eagles Junior Football Club where her 3 sons and daughter have played. You will agree that this is a very unique and special achievement for a father and daughter to receive such a prestigious award. Well done to both Sharon and Don from all at Lilydale Football Club. Page 26 Page 7

There was no lunch in the rooms before last week s game due to lack of interest. As a matter of fact, only one booking was received by Gerry by Thursday and that was from Bob and Merle Brown. Bob and Merle love the club and love sport for that matter. Bob is a keen walker and a member of a walking club and would put most blokes 20 years his junior to shame with his fitness. Well their love of sport led them into town to see Tour de France winner Cadel Evans do his lap of honour. And guess what? They popped up on the television coverage of the event with a close up of both Bob and Merle singing the National Anthem. They also popped up at the Olinda Creek Hotel for lunch on Saturday where the club had a full table organised after the lunch in the rooms was cancelled. And they were also there at the Vote Count on Saturday night. A great couple of Falcon Supporters. Every year Rocco Pompei runs the Falconian Big Bucks raffle and this year was no exception. Rocco would like to announce the winners of the prizes in this years draw are: #100 Perc Ruscitti $3000 #57 Simon Rattray $1000 #6 Ron Fotia $500 #91 Pam Shore $300 #92 John Corran $200 One Anzac Day this year you will recall that we had 2 long standing and long serving members of our club receive 50 year service awards from the Chairman of the EFL in Hector Cruickshank and Don Cruse. Well Don was not the only member of the Cruse Family to receive the award as his daughter Sharon Nied received the award for her work with the Ferntree Gully Eagles Football Club. The full story and picture of Sharon receiving her award from the EFL s Rod Cordwell is on page 7. Last Thursday week, Joffa Carswell gave an inspirational talk to those in attendance at selection about the fortunes of football clubs including the successful dynasties of football clubs such as Vermont, and what is the secret to their success. Joffa reckons it all boils down to having a core of good players sticking with the club. He also reckons Lilydale is on an upward spiral and if we keep our core, we can be a successful dynasty in the EFL. Page 8 Page 25

The vote count was a great success again last Saturday except for the clash with Nathan O Keefe s 21 st birthday party. The whole vote count for all 3 grades took less than an hour and kept the crowd entertained and in suspense until the final round. Congratulations to Kris Shore, Jamie Cruickshank and Sam Horsley. It was good to see Dobbo at the vote count having a few quiet sherbs. He may not reckon he can play football but he still reckons he is a super hero judging by this picture of him in the rooms on Saturday night. Note the absence of any six pack. We did mention the fact that Nathan O Keefe celebrated his 21 st birthday last week. Well it apparently went to his head and he lost it for 5 minutes or so. Good thing medical assistance was on hand to look after the lad. What would the coach have thought if he was there to witness the incident? Well that brings us to some other birthday wishes which have slipped by over the past weeks including Shane Beckwith (48), Sammy Meyers (20), Garry Skelton (59), Billy Gardner (18), Josh Hill (24) and Nick Sargent (18). FS hopes you had a great birthday and have many more to come. If you have someone coming up with a birthday or other milestone, let Fathertoosa know. The President has asked that we extend an invitation to all our supporters to come down on Thursday Selection nights during the finals to show support for the teams. So all you girlfriends, mums, dads, brothers and sisters come on down and show the boys that we are right behind them. The team photos were taken last week and will be posted on the website and available for purchase over the next few weeks. See Gerry Toohey. Daniel is a product of our Juniors and played in the Colts with Matt Lawrence, Trent Tesoriero, Andrew Whelan, Ashraf Davies and Marcus Baxter to name a few.
