We have elected a new board for 2013-2014 session. The club is putting on the Sherwood Knottingham shoot in two weeks, the national outdoor championships are in Darrington, WA the end of July and we have many club members participating in the shoot. We had the OBH state outdoor field championships at Sylvan last month and several of our members were champions or placed in the top of their divisions. Congrats to all who participated, it was a hot and long weekend! Vandalism at the club On another note, we have recently had some vandalism at the club, again. This time, someone overflowed the toilets and super glued the toilet paper dispenser, so that no new paper could be put in and the club is now going to have to pay to have it removed and replaced. Several members have noticed a lot of youth who are not shooting or participating in the broadhead league or practicing on the range, being unsupervised. While we hope that none of our members are causing this damage, we remind parents that if you are bringing guests or your family to an event, please make sure the kids are under adult supervision if they are not shooting with you. Also we need to take pride in our club. So if you notice anything suspicious or notice any guests or members not following the rules, please bring it to their attention or notify one of the board members. Take pride in our range. It is your membership dues that go towards maintenance of the grounds, targets etc. We want to use those dollars to improve the club not spend it on replacing vandalized property. P A G E 2 Target Shooter upcoming local events. The State Games or Oregon is the weekend of July 12-13th. Visit their website to sign up. Archery Fun Fact: Occidental Archery Occidental archery is one of the classical traditions of archery. An occidental bow is unstrung whenever it is not in use to prevent the bow from shrinking. It can be made out of yew, willow or lemonwood, and the ends of the bow are notched. The bow itself is straight when not strung. The owner may choose to put colored feathers onto the bow to indicate ownership. http:// entertainmentguide.local.com/ archery-kids- 8181.html State Games of Oregon The annual Sherwood Nottingham shoot is coming up soon. July 20-21. It will be at Edy School 21472 SW Copper Terrace Sherwood, OR 97140. This is a new place for the tournament. We have room for 80 shooters so register as soon as you can. Keith and his crew could use the help with the set up of the targets for that weekend. They will be meeting at the range at about 11:30 AM on Friday the 19th and be out at the school by about 1 PM. If you want to help, show up then or contact Keith : 503-922-0653 for more details on how you can help. We are also a new shoot with a similar format on Saturday August 3rd, called the United Bowmen World Match. It will take place on the same field as Knottingham. Check out the club website for more information on how to register. It s an 80 yard target shoot! We have FITA Paper Targets in the clubhouse if you need to use them for practice. V O L U M E 1 I S S U E 7 P A G E 3 Just for Youth.. Welcome new director Brandon Tenner Brandon Tenner is taking over the JOAD youth program at Sylvan. In his own words, here is a little bit about his background and goals for this program. I have been shooting archery for over 28 years. I grew up in an archery family and competed with a compound bow until I was 18. A family friend suggested I try shooting an Olympic recurve and I have been shooting one ever since. I am currently the NFAA Marked 3D National Champion and hold all of the OBH records for the Adult Male Olympic class. I am a certified US Collegiate Archery coach as well as a Level II NFAA/USA Archery coach. I am also currently the Head Coach for the Oregon State University Archery Club. I have been very fortunate to have great coaches throughout the years and want to do my part to pay it forward to the next generation of competitive archers. My goal is, I want to help the youth of the greater Portland area get outdoors and learn the sport of archery. I want them to set personal archery goals and then work towards achieving them. Basic Archery Lessons have started at Sylvan! This is something that your club is doing for you! Mike Brown will be with us throughout the summer still and he is requesting assistant instructors for his Basic Archery Lessons which are listed below. Anyone wishing to help can earn work party credit towards next years membership. Contact Mike for more details. Monday Nights from 6:30 to 8:00 PM Jul 15, Aug 5th, 12, 19th, 26th, Sep 2nd, 9th. Thursday Nights from 6:30 to 8:00 PM. Jul 18, Aug 1th, 8, 15th 22th 29th, Sep 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th. Cost is $5:00 for Nonmembers, Free for Members. Instruction by : Mike Brown sgm.archer@gmail.com 503-314-8709 See the Sylvan archers web link fliers for details. http://www.sylvanarchers.org/ instruction.htm. 3-D updates. With Dave Osler and Brent Whittaker You may have noticed that some of the 3D targets are in need of repair. Rest assured, the club is waiting on the kits to fix the animals. They are on backorder and have been for awhile. We do not know the arrival date, but as soon as they are in, we will be working hard to get them fixed. We will be sending out an email to have a work party to help get this accomplished, so look for that in the next few weeks. The broadhead league is in full swing. So do not forget to join us on Wednesday nights out at the range! If you want to help set up or tear down the course give Dave a call or a text: 503-913-3470. We can always use extra hands with the set up or tear down.

Nomination for Trustee for Sylvan Archers Becky Jackson has been nominated for one of the trustee positions for Sylvan Archers. A Sylvan member for over 30 years, Becky has been shooting archery for over 50 years and competes as a bare bow shooter. She has participated in many local, state, national and international championships. As a retired school teacher, she enjoys teaching youth archery through 4-H, summer camps and outdoor school programs. She has held board positions with Sylvan Archers over the years, but more importantly she has been a trustee twice during her years as a member. She is a trusted and well respected member of our club and by taking a trustee position, her goal is to preserve the fiscal integrity of the club. Her background as an educator and a trusted member of the community, makes her a great candidate for one of these positions. Please join us at our August Meeting to vote and install her as one of our trustees. We still need another Trustee, if you are interested in the position, please contact a board member and we will let you know the particulars of the job. You can also find this on our website.

Special Guests feature. For the past few days we have been lucky enough to have some special guests camping and participating in our local shoots. We are proud to be hosting the world renowned archers, Frank and Becky Pearson. If you have not heard of this couple, you are probably new to archery! They each have been sponsored and shot in the amateur and pro divisions in target archery for many years and also participate in unmarked and marked 3D as well. They have won many national and international championships over the years and currently run their own archery school in Saint David, AZ. You will see them this weekend at the STATE GAMES OF OREGON ARCHERY SHOOT and up in Darrington, WA for the US outdoor Nationals. The have graciously offered to put on a free clinic this Saturday the 13th of July at 5 PM out at the range for anyone who is interested in getting a little help fine tuning their techniques for target shooting or hunting. For more information on their background and their school in Arizona please visit their website at: www.frankpearson.com And if you are out at the range, stop by and introduce yourself and welcome them to Sylvan! More featured guests. We are also please to be having two international guests from Australia staying with us and also participating in our local shoots. They went to the Redding shoot, the Safari at Cascadian, our state outdoor, our 3D Super Shoot in Yamhill and they will be at the STATE GAMES, Knottingham Invitational and on their way up to the US Outdoor Nationals in Darrington, WA. They both have competed all over the world and won many local, regional, state and international championships shooting compound Freestyle. So if you are out at the range, stop by and say hello to David and Marie. They are in the big motorhome! And maybe pick up a few archery tips!
