getting started PACKAGING: For added protection all our kayaks are shipped in a clear plastic wrap. The plastic wrap is made from 100% recyclable polyethylene. Please check with your local refuse collection service to see if you can recycle the wrap in your area. Some kayaks will be fitted with foam transport blocks to prevent the decks from being squashed in transit. These kayaks will have a yellow sticker to explain that the blocks marked with an X should be removed. Do NOT remove any other foam blocks as your kayak may have them fitted for buoyancy. If you are unsure which foam blocks to remove, please ask an authorised dealer. FEATURES & OUTFITTING: Before taking to the water you should familiarise yourself with the features of your kayak and adjust any outfitting for your comfort. The information provided in this guide will help you to do this. If you are unsure about any feature, please ask an authorised dealer. DRAIN PLUG: To prevent pressure build up, the Drain Plug on our sit-on top kayaks should be unscrewed when the kayak is not in use. FURTHER INFORMATION: If you would like to know more about your Perception kayak from the information given in this manual, further details can be found at: www.perceptionkayaks.com Please check our Frequently Asked Questions section at www.perceptionkayaks.com to find answers to commonly asked questions. Contact an authorised dealer for further information or send us an email via www.perception.com ESSENTIALS CHECKLIST: PERSONAL FLOTATION DEVICE (PFD) An ISO/CE approved, comfortable and secure fitting PFD should be worn at all times. Shorter PFDs are available that are ideal for kayak paddling. PADDLE Choosing a paddle is almost as important as your choice of boat. Blade shape, length, weight, and material all offer different experiences. On longer trips, it is strongly recommended that you have a spare paddle that can be easily stowed on your deck. SAFETY EQUIPMENT We recommend you carry safety equipment appropriate to your intended activity. PERSONAL GEAR There are many items that you may wish to take with you on a paddling trip. Your location, length of journey, group size, weather etc. will all play a part in this essentials list. Drinking water Snacks Extra clothes in a drybag Map or chart First- Aid Kit Sun protection To help you learn about the logistics of a paddling trip and correct paddling technique we strongly recommend a good beginner-level paddling course from a certified instructor. OTHER ACCESSORIES: There are a wide variety of accessories designed for your kayak to enhance the performance and overall experience. Not all accessories are available for all models. SPRAYDECK For longer trips or rougher conditions, a spraydeck is worn by the paddler to keep water out of the cockpit area. A variety of spraydeck sizes and styles are available to suit our different models of kayak. Recreational spraydecks are nylon and contain anti implosion battens to prevent sagging and resist implosion under pressure. Tandem spraydecks are nylon and made in two pieces with Velcro attachment so you can separate from your paddling partner if needed. Touring spraydecks combine a neoprene deck offering a better seal for rougher conditions, with a nylon waist tube for added comfort. DRY BAG Water-resistant storage for an extra level of protection and accessibility for gear. Available in a wide range of sizes and should always be used for kit you take on the water. PADDLING CAG Designed for freedom of movement whist paddling and offer protection against the elements. Different types of seals around the neck, arms and waist allow for a variety of levels of dryness. 3

features PUSH-ON HATCH COVERS: Durable push-on hatch covers make gear access easier than ever while offering a true-fitting seal. Sealed bulkheads create the compartments in our recreational, touring and sea kayaks. To remove the covers, find the tab and peel off. To replace the cover, hook it under the hatch rim and press it on firmly the entire way around. SCREW HATCHES: Access stowage space with our quick access screw hatches. The threadless system and reliable gasket work perfectly in conjunction with a mesh bag to stow a snack or small items. CARRY HANDLES: Comfortable handles ensure the secure carrying of your kayak from one adventure to the next. MOULD-IN HANDLES: Our iconic moulded handles provide an unrivalled grip with a solid handle to lift your boat to and from the water or onto your vehicle. TRACKING HULL: On our broader hulls where initial stability is crucial, tracking channels and a defined keel are added to control the flow of water as it passes under the hull. This gives exceptional directional stability to even our shortest kayaks. SKID PLATE: A replaceable plate used in high wear areas on some models. TRUTRAK SKEG SYSTEM: Durable construction and hydrofoil shape offers more efficient water mending for an improved paddling performance when deployed appropriately in winds and currents. Skeg depth is adjusted with either a sliding control or a rope and cleat control, depending on model (located on the left side of the kayak cockpit). Always lift the skeg before paddling in shallow water. TOURING RUDDER SYSTEM: Take control and gain paddling efficiency in choppy conditions or in fast current. As an option, certain models can have the Touring Rudder pre-installed. After market rudder systems are also available. Please contact an authorised dealer for any questions regarding setup or installation, or visit www.perception.co.uk for fitting instructions. Once your Touring Rudder is installed, use the lift line (located on the right side of the kayak, toward the rear of the cockpit) to drop the rudder into the water by pulling it forward. To operate the rudder, use the Tip-Toes footrest pedal system. Always lift the rudder before paddling in shallow water. MOULD-IN FOOTRESTS: Get a grip in our sit-on tops without pedals getting in the way. Hop on and off... they re always ready to go! PEDAL FOOTRESTS: The adjustment lever is located on the backside of the footpedal. To adjust, squeeze the lever and slide the footpeg to the desired location. Release the lever to lock it in place. TIP-TOES FOOTRESTS: As with the Pedal Footrests, use the lever on the back of the bracing footpeg to adjust the position. A pivot pedal is fitted to the top of both bracing footpegs to control a rudder. To maintain a straight position, both pivot pedals should be even with each other. To steer the kayak right, push the right pivot pedal away from you. To steer the kayak left, push the left pivot pedal away from you. Allow the pedal that is not in use to automatically move towards you when the other pedal is pushed. 5

outfitting COMFORT SEAT & BACKREST: A detachable outfitting system designed specifically for sit-on top kayaks. With padded seat and high backrest giving a positive and supportive paddling position. ZONE SEATING SYSTEM: Engineered to give comfort and support. A height adjustable backrest is the core of the Zone Seating System which allows adjustment for the perfect fit. The Comfort Seat & Backrest has four adjustment straps (two forward fixing and two rear). Attach each strap to the corresponding attachment loop on the kayak. NB some are designed for attaching other accessories too. The padded seatback adjusts forward and back with the strap behind the backrest. Tighten the strap by pulling forward on the nylon loop behind the seat or loosen it by pushing on the thumb tab. For good rotation while paddling it shouldn t be too tight. For extra control and grip, our thigh strap system can be added to your sit-on kayak. These come as standard on surf specification models and can easily be clipped on to any of our sit-on top range. Once fitted, they pull over your thighs and can be adjusted for the perfect fit. The padded seatback is raised by pulling the strap at the front of the seat forward. Higher seatback positions are best for resting or more leisurely paddling. To lower the seatback push the release button under the strap at the front of the seat. A paddle leash can be used to keep your paddle securely attached to your sit-on top kayak. The leash attaches to the kayak and then fastens around a paddle shaft. The leash doesn t interfere with normal paddling and means that if you fall off in the surf, you only need keep hold of the kayak as your paddle can t float away! Padded thigh grips offer support and control when needed without imposing on access in the cockpit area. 6

ZONE DLX SEATING SYSTEM: Deluxe outfitting for the touring paddler offers the ultimate in adjustment, support and fit. Patented, easy tuned components include leg support and a height adjustable backrest. ZONE EXP SEATING SYSTEM: Trek to parts unknown without the punishment in our expedition grade outfitting. Patented, adjustable leg support and a low profile backband are ergonomically designed for all day comfort. The padded seatback adjusts forward and back with the strap behind the backrest. Tighten the strap by pulling forward on the nylon loop behind the seat or loosen it by pushing on the thumb tab. For good rotation while paddling it shouldn t be too tight. The padded backband adjusts forward and back with the strap behind the backrest. Tighten the backrest by pulling forward on the nylon loops on either side behind the seat or loosen them by pushing on the thumb tabs. Fine tune the height adjustment with the three smaller webbing straps. The padded seatback is raised by pulling the strap at the front of the seat forward. Higher seatback positions are best for resting or more leisurely paddling. To lower the seatback push the release button under the strap at the front of the seat. The leg lifters located at the front part of the seat are adjusted with the two straps to the sides of the seat. Pull up on the nylon loops to raise the leg lifters or push on the thumb tabs to lower. Using the leg lifters to add support under your legs will help prevent leg fatigue. The leg lifters located at the front part of the seat are adjusted with the two straps to the sides of the seat. Pull up on the nylon loops to raise the leg lifters or push on the thumb tabs to lower. Using the leg lifters to add support under your legs will help prevent leg fatigue. Adjustable padded thigh braces can be positioned to provide positive grip for a more responsive paddling style and greater edge control. To adjust, loosen the screw on the outside of the kayak and remove the cockpit wing screw. Slide the brace to a new position and fix in place with the hole that best lines up on the wing. 7

transportation ROOF RACK A crossbar roof rack ( sports rack ), or J cradle for your vehicle is the best method of transporting a kayak. It should be lashed down at each crossbar, as well as at the bow and stern to each end of the vehicle. Kayak cradles are recommended for boats being transported flat to lessen chances of deformation from being lashed too tightly to the bars. Rotomolded kayaks can be transported on their edge or upside down (hull up) safely using kayak stackers. FOAM BLOCK OR INFLATABLE RACKS Foam block and inflatable racks can be used for transporting kayaks if extreme caution is practiced in rigging the load. They should be wide enough for adequate support. The boats must be securely attached to the top of the vehicle through the doors or windows and attached securely to both the front and back of the vehicle. If these tie down points at the front and back aren t available on your vehicle, foam block or inflatable racks should NOT be used. INCLEMENT WEATHER If traveling when inclement weather is threatening, position the kayak upside down if possible. A kayak heavy with water can become dangerous. Use a portage cover to seal the cockpit if an upside down position is not possible. Periodically check your straps to ensure they have not stretched while wet. IMPORTANT: Always check your tie down rigging often as ropes and straps may loosen in transport. 8

storage SHORT TERM STORAGE Be sure to empty the kayak of all water. The kayak may be stored on its side or in a vertical position temporarily. Storage in these positions for an extended period of time could cause flattening or deformation in the side of the hull. LONG TERM STORAGE In addition to emptying all water out, you should clean the kayak by rinsing with freshwater especially if the kayak has been used in salt water or becomes muddy. Store out of direct sunlight and indoors, if possible. UV exposure can shorten the lifespan of any kayak and can degrade its finish. Kayaks can be stored slung on their sides via web straps, positioned 1/3 of the way along the hull (as shown). Be sure to not leave straps or ropes tightly wound around the hull for extended periods of time as it may cause deformation. Your kayak can also be stored hull up (as shown) on parallel bars with weight supported evenly throughout its length. For large cockpit (recreational) boats, position the bars so that the cockpit coaming rests on the bars. For smaller cockpit kayaks, position bars so that they contact the deck between the cockpit and any hatches. CAUTION: Do not suspend your kayak by using the grab loops at either end of the boat. This can cause the hull to distort over time. 9

care & maintenance ROTOMOULDED KAYAK CARE Our kayaks are made of high-density superlinear polyethylene, which is virtually maintenance free. A minimal amount of care in storage and transporting will help the kayak maintain a like-new condition for many years. Polyethylene will become more flexible when in warm conditions such as a hot, sunny day. It is possible for a kayak strapped tightly to a roof rack to temporarily deform at the weight bearing points. Use a rigid bar sport rack in addition to a kayak cradle to disperse the weights. SUPERLINEAR POLYETHYLENE Our kayak plastic is more than just plastic... it has to be stiff to retain shape for optimum performance, hard wearing to take the knocks, abrasion resistant and of course resistant to UV. Our Superlinear Polyethylene material is made specifically for us, to provide all the properties that enable us to make the best possible kayaks. We make our boats light and we make them strong. Our purpose built high tech machinery ensures that we re able to yield the maximum that the material has to offer. This means you ll have a boat that continues to perform the way it s designed to and can take the bumps and scrapes that everyday paddling throws at it. CLEANING Usually, a quick rinse of fresh water is all that is necessary to keep your hull clean and functioning in good order. This is very important after paddling in salt water, or if your boat is outfitted with a rudder system or skeg. Be sure to thoroughly rinse the skeg, rudder, rudder cables, and footbraces with fresh water to remove salt residue. Be careful when loading and unloading your kayak. Superficial scratches may occur, but can be removed or reduced by use of a marine boat polish designed for polyethylene hulls. Sanding or use of an abrasive rubbing compound is not recommended. To keep your kayak shining and minimise the long-term degradation caused by UV exposure, use an ultraviolet protectant. WARNING: Avoid dragging a kayak across the ground to prolong its life and maintain its look and performance. Two people, utilising the carrying handles, is the best way to transport the boat. Alternately, you can transport using a kayak cart, available at your dealer. 10

safety Any person using kayaks built and/or sold by Perception is personally responsible for determining that their abilities are equal or superior to the conditions encountered and exercising proper judgment in choice of where and when to paddle. Any person using Perception kayaks or participating in paddlesport assumes all risks and takes complete responsibility for any and all damages, or injuries, including death, which may result. Consult your physician prior to beginning your paddlesport training. DO S: Wear an Approved personal flotation device (PFD). Wear a helmet when paddling whitewater or in the ocean. Get paddlesports instruction from a licensed or certified instructor. Dress appropriately for weather conditions; cold water and/or weather can result in hypothermia. Check your equipment prior to each use for signs of wear or failure. Scout unfamiliar waters. If necessary, paddle to shore and carry your boat past uncertain areas. Stay aware of appropriate river water levels, tidal changes, dangerous currents, and weather changes. Follow manufacturer s recommendations for use and outfitting of your kayak. Leave your paddling location and agenda with someone at home before departing. Obtain certified first aid and rescue training and carry first aid and rescue equipment. DON TS: Never exceed your ability and assess how far and how long you can paddle or swim. Never paddle alone. Never consume alcohol, or any other substance that may affect your coordination, judgment, or ability when paddling. Never paddle in flood conditions. Never allow minors to use the boat without adult supervision. Avoid bracing yourself in the kayak in such a way that you have to release any outfitting to escape. Do not impair entry or exit access to the kayak when installing additional outfitting. WARNING: Kayaking can be hazardous with potential risk of serious injury and even death. 11
