Stewart LECKIE born 15 July 1814 Paisley Scotland The family history of Archibald LECKIE and Helen BOWIE Archibald LECKIE was born about 1778 Scotland. If the family followed the Scottish naming pattern his father may have been Archibald LECKIE. SEARCH (Reference LDS FHC microfilm The Surnames of Scotland LECKIE, LECKY. An old surname common in shires of Dumbarton and Stirling, derived from the barony of Leckie in the parish of Gargunnock, Stirlingshire, Murdoch Leckie received a grant of two fourth parts of Bathewnn and Altremony from Robert III (RMS., I app. II, 1819). David Lekky was denounced rebel in 1537 (Trials, I, p. *178), Janet Laiky appears in Cammok, parish of Glenylla, 1599, and Euphemia Laikie in Carneleithe, 1694 (Brechin). The surname appears as Lecque among the Scots Guards in France, and the Leckies of Antrim and Carlow in Ireland are of Scottish descent. In Forman s heraldic MS. The name is spelled Leuke. The individual who had a charter of the lands of Leckie in the reign of David II was a descendant of Corc,. brother of Maldouen, third earl of Lennox (sc. Peer., p 220). (Reference Alexander Turnbull Library Wellington publication The Surnames of Scotland) Gargunnock and Kippen Six-miles west of Stirling just off the A811, GARGUNNOCK, although mainly composed of eighteenth-century cottages, has a seventeenth-century grey crow-stepped church at the heart of the village. It is also home to the oldest agricultural show in Scotland held here every summer since 1795. The views from the village over the great green of the carse and across to the mountains of the Trossachs are spectacular. To the east of the village in rolling park land is handsome Gargunnock House, ancestral home of the Stirlings; Choplin is reputed to have spent two weeks here improving the family s keyboard skill. Recently restored and renovated, the house was begun in 1580, with pediments and a Classical facade added in 1794. It sleeps 16 people, and can be rented from the Landmark Trust (01628/825925) for around 1,500 per week, depending on the season. There is one pub in the centre of the village, the over-renovated Gargunnock Inn, which serves run-of-the-mill food. 1

More appetising meals can be had in Kippen, which can be reached by a lovely unmarked walk. The walk (1 hr 30 min) leads from the west of Gargunnock - the village is a dead end - through a path of beech trees and into the LECKIE Estate, at the heart of which is the privately owned LECKIE Castle, a sixteenth-century Laird s House where the Lady of LECKIE entertained Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745. Following the farm road to the left as you look down at LECKIE Castle, you will eventually come to the Burnton of Boqhuan, a row of eighteenth-century red-stone cottages; take the left hand folk past the Burnton, until the track comes to a steep field. Cross the field to the far gates and continue up the track and you sill soon begin the descent into Kippen. You can have a good lunch at The Cross Keys, an eighteenth-century hotel-pub on the main street (01786/870293). There is little to do in Kippen other than enjoy wandering through its pretty cobbled street of eighteenth-century houses and a smithy, beautifully restored by the NTS and the adjoining ruined church and graveyard. You can get a bus back from here to Stirling. (Reference Central Scotland Loch Lomond page 212-213 article sent to me by Living LECKIE New Zealand) Helen BOWIE was born about 1784 Scotland.
