This week, UW welcomes another top-ranked Pac-12 foe in No. 8 Oregon State, Friday at 7 p.m. It will be Dad s and Daughter s Night and fans can watch live streaming/audio at gohuskies.com and also chat live with former Husky Samantha Walior. Live stats will also be available, all for free. Scouting No. 8 Oregon State The Beavers moved up two spots in the rankings this week to No. 8 with an average of 196.050 and a high of 196.800 on the year. As a team, they rank 18th on vault (48.867), third on bars (49.217), 10th on beam (48.775) and third on floor (49.192). Individually, Leslie Mak ranks eighth in the country in the all-around with an average of 39.392 and Makayla Stambaugh is 17th with a 39.242. Four Beavers rank in the top 25 on bars; Mak is first on beam and three rank amongst the best on floor. OSU had its highest score of the season last week, defeating No. 12 Stanford. 2012 Seattle Regional Tickets On Sale For the first time since 2009, an NCAA Gymnastics Regional will be held at the University of Washington at Alaska Airlines Arena on April 7. This will be one of six NCAA Regional sites around the country and will include six teams and other qualifying individuals that will be announced two weeks prior to the event. Tickets went on sale Friday, Jan. 27 at 8:30 a.m. PT. You can order by walking into the Husky Ticket Office in the Graves Building on campus or by calling the ticket office at (206) 543-2200. Tickets will be available on ticketmaster.com in approximately one week. Fans can also purchase tickets at the Husky Ticket Booth at Friday s 7 p.m. home meet vs. No. 1 UCLA. Tickets are $12 for reserved seating, $9 for general admission adult, $6 for children and students and $4 for the group discount of 15+. More information about the 2012 Seattle Regional will be posted as the event gets closer. UW TV To Tape Delay All Home Meets UW TV (Chanel 27 in the Puget Sound Region) will tape delay all five of the 2012 home gymnastics meets. UW TV will tape each meet live and air them on a later date. The opening home meet vs. UCLA will air Feb. 3. The Oregon State meet will air Feb. 10, the LSU/SPU meet on Feb. 24, the Arizona State meet on March 9 and the SJSU/Central Michigan meet on March 16. All meets will air at 10 p.m. PT. Fans can watch the live streaming of the event under Husky All Access for free at www.gohuskies.com. Live chat and stats will also be available online for free. Pac-12 Women s Gymnastics Championships To Be Televised on Fox Sports Net Fans will have the special opportunity to see the Husky Gym Dawgs on Fox Sports Net in March. As part of the Pac-12 conference s agreement with Fox Sports Net, the Pac-12 Women s Gymnastics Championships will be televised on the network. The competition will take place on March 24, 2012 at the Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City, Utah on the campus of the University of Utah. The championships will be tape-delayed and played at a later date, TBD, during the weekend after March 29, 2012. The Husky gymnasts and other Pac-12 gymnasts are honored and excited for this event, as this will be the only televised collegiate gymnastics event for the 2012 season. Jim Watson will provide the play-by-play and Olympic gold medalist Amanda Borden will provide analysis. Engreitz Named GoHuskies.com Student-Athlete Of The Week Senior Ruby Engreitz was named the GoHuskies.com Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Jan. 23-29. This is the first such honor for the gymnastics team on the year. The Kirkland, Wash., native led the No. 22-ranked UW gymnastics team to one of the biggest upsets in school history as the Huskies knocked on No. 1, and undefeated, UCLA in the home opener, 195.350-194.600.
Engreitz won two events and the all-around while posting five season-bests. It was her second bars win of the year with a 9.850, her first floor win with a new career-high of 9.875 and second all-around with a 39.325. This was just the third win ever for UW over UCLA and first since 2004. Huskies In The National Rankings As a team, UW ranks in the top 25 in three events. The Huskies are 24th on vault (48.781), 16th on bars (48.744) and ninth on beam (48.831). No. 22 Huskies Upset No. 1 UCLA In First Home Meet The No. 22-ranked UW gymnastics team pulled a huge upset in its first home meet of 2012, knocking off undefeated and No. 1 UCLA 195.350-194.600. The Huskies led after every rotation and beat the Bruins for just the third time in school history and first since 2004. This is the second-best score of the season for the Huskies who nearly pulled an upset over Stanford last weekend. Senior Ruby Engreitz (Kirkland, Wash.) set a new career-high on the floor, winning the event with a 9.875. Engreitz also won the all-around with a 39.325 and the bars with a 9.85, both season-highs. She set seasonhighs on every event, including a 9.8 on vault and a 9.8 on beam. Sophomore Aliza Vaccher (Eugene, Ore.) set a season-high on floor with a 9.725 and finished second in the all-around with a 38.875. Junior Lauren Rogers (Plains, Pa.) tied for second on vault with a 9.825.She also had a season-best on floor of 9.850. Hatsune Akaogi (Cupertino, Calif.) finished third on beam with a 9.800 and performed on beam for the first time this season, posting a solid 9.75. Junior Phoebe Tham (North Vancouver, B.C.) set season-highs on bars and floor. The Huskies hit all of their routines on bars and beam. UW continues to improve its floor score with another season-best of 48.925. UCLA was averaging a 196.775 on the year and hadn t scored a 194 since early last season. Husky Post Big Numbers In Narrow Loss At Stanford No. 14 Stanford continued their four-straight season home winning streak, as the Gym Dawgs were narrowly defeated by the Cardinal in the Huskies third of three straight road meets to begin the season. Washington again improved upon their combined team score, scoring 195.725 to Stanford s 195.925, setting a season best score for the third week in a row. The Huskies recorded team season-highs on all four events as well. UW posted a 49.050 on bars, a 49.025 on vault, a 48.750 on floor, and a 48.900 on beam. Junior Amanda Cline won her second vault title of the season with a seasonhigh 9.875. Fellow junior Paige Bixler set a season-high 9.825 on beam and freshman McKenzie Fechter posted a career-high 9.850 on floor. Senior Ruby Engreitz set a career high in all-around and sophomore Aliza Vaccher competed in all-around for the first time this season, after battling back from injury. Rogers Posts Big Numbers Vs. Boise State In their second of three-straight road meets to start the season, No. 16 UW came from behind but was barely edged out by No. 14 Boise State, who won the meet 194.400-193.425. Despite the loss, it was Washington s highest score of the season. A Husky won three of the four events as well as the all-around as junior Lauren Rogers won vault and all-around, junior Megan Whitney won the balance beam, and freshman McKenzie Fechter won the floor. This was the first career vault title for Rogers, as she scored a career best 9.875. Boise State s Ciera Perkins won the bars with a 9.900. Engreitz, Cline, Bixler & Fechter Help Team to Opening Meet Win UW won its 2012 opener at Michigan State, 193.175-191.825. Although the Husky scores weren t quite what they expected and despite several falls on floor, UW rebounded to post a solid score on beam and still get the win. A Husky won all four events including the all-around which was won by senior Ruby Engreitz. Engreitz also won the bars. The winning team consisted of Ruby Engreitz, McKenzie Fechter, Kylie Sharp, Paige Bixler, Phoebe Tham, and Aliza Vaccher. Because it was an intrasquad meet, the scores are not made public and do not count towards the student-athletes individual or team scores. Senior Amanda Cline continued her success from the 2011 season, emerging victorious on vault and winning the event for the Gold Team. Lauren Rogers, Madison Podlucky, and Megan Whitney also scored high on the vault. Rogers, Engreitz, and Hatsune Akaogi all tied for top honors on bars. Paige Bixler led the way on the beam for Purple, while Akaogi, Whitney, and Engreitz also scored high on the event. Huskies Face Tough Schedule This Season Every Division I opponent on UW s schedule was ranked or receiving votes in the preseason poll. Preseason No. 1 UCLA, No. 6 Nebraska, No. 7 Oregon State, No. 8 Stanford, No. 10 Michigan, No. 12 LSU, No. 14 Boise State, No. 19 Arizona and the following teams that are receiving votes: Michigan State, Southern Utah, Arizona State, San Jose State, Central Michigan and Cal. In 2011 the Huskies had one of the best seasons in school history, placing a school-best third place at the Pac-10 Championships, beating out Stanford. UW then was leading this year s new conference opponent Utah, at the Regionals after three events and just missed going to nationals. The Pac- 12 Championships will be hosted by No. 5 Utah on March 24. UW will host the NCAA Regionals this year at 4 p.m. on April 7. Pac-12 Coaches Pick Huskies Fifth In a polling of the Conference s eight women s gymnastics coaches, UCLA was picked as the preseason favorite to capture the 2012 regular season, the Pac-12 announced. The 2011 NCAA runner-up received 48 points and six first-place votes. The National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches (NACGC) has also selected the Bruins as the No. 1 team in the nation in its Preseason Coaches Poll. Utah, who finished fifth in last year s NCAA Championships, followed with 43 points and two first place votes to place second. The Utes also make an appearance in the national poll, appearing at No. 5. Oregon State took third place with 38 points and also boasts a No. 7 national ranking. Stanford s 30 points slotted them in fourth place. The Cardinal is the fourth Pac-12 team in the national top 10, sporting a No. 8 ranking. With 24 points, Washington sits in fifth place in the Conference and No. 16 nationally after upsetting Stanford and placing third at last year s Pac-10 Championship. Arizona earned 19 points and appears in sixth place. The Wildcats are the Conference s sixth team to appear in the national top 25 at No. 19. Rounding out the poll, both Arizona State and Cal placed seventh in the voting with 11 points respectively. Huskies Sign Three For 2013 Nov. 9 is national signing day for many sports including gymnastics. In 2011 head coach Joanne Bowers and her staff are proud to announce the three newest Huskies that signed National Letters of Intent for the 2012-13 school year. Eliza Barach, Sheridan Metcalf and Allison Northey will attend UW and compete for Bowers and the Husky assistant coaches, David McCreary and Elise Ray.

Barach is a Level 10 gymnast from Albany, N.Y., where she competes at World Class Gymnastics in Latham, NY, under the direction of coaches Joan and Bobby Piehler. She attends Bethlehem Central HS in Delmar, NY and carries a 3.72 GPA. She is the daughter of Christina Barach and Marc Barach. She is a five-time National Qualifier. In 2011, she took first place on bars, beam, and AA at the Parkettes Invitational, placed second on bars, third on vault and AA at Regionals and 11th on floor at Nationals. In 2010, Barach placed first on bars and third AA at the State meet, first place on vault and bars, second on floor and third in the AA at Regionals. She placed 12th on beam and 21st in the AA at Nationals. Coach Bowers says, Eliza is a very strong all-around gymnast and outstanding competitor. She is very dynamic on vault and floor, but just as strong and skilled on beam and bars. Eliza is a hard worker and we feel will continue to improve and excel at UW. Metcalf hails from Mesa, Ariz,, and attends Mt. View HS where she is boasting a 4.2 GPA. She competes for Desert Devils and has been coached by Kristin Fanning, Wesley Jones, and Shelly Eaton, where many current and former Huskies also competed in club. She is the daughter of Laurie and Mern Metcalf. She was named the 2011 Most Outstanding Gymnast for the state of Arizona and the 2011 JO Gymnast of the Year for Arizona as well. She swept the gold medals at the state championships and qualified for JO s by placing third on the bars and sixth in the all-around at Regionals. She qualified to Nationals and placed eight on bars and 10th in the AA. In 2008 she won the all-around, vault and uneven bars titles at the Level 10 State Championships. She also won the all-around title at 2008 Level 10 Regional Championships and earned gold medals on uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise. At the JO Nationals she won the bars, was third in the all-around, fourth on the flour and sixth on vault. Coach Bowers says, We feel blessed to have someone of Sheridan s quality to join our program. She is a tough competitor and can help us on every event. We have a history of successful gymnasts from her club and we fully expect Sheridan to follow in those footsteps. Northey is from Sammamish, Wash., and attends Skyline HS, where she has a 3.75 GPA. She is the daughter of Lori and Steve Northey. She competes at Gymnastics East, where she is coached by Kim Rogers, Tammy Carney, and Remus Dragan. She has been a National qualifier for the past three years as a level 10 gymnast. In 2011, she placed first on beam and second on vault at the Battle in Seattle meet, first on beam and second on bars, vault and AA at the Manhattan Classic, At Regionals, she placed fist on vault, bars and the AA and second on floor. At Nationals, she was sixth on beam and seventh on She was named Gymnast of the Year at Gym East and qualified to compete at the Copa Quetzal International Meet in Guatemala. In 2010, she placed first on floor, second on beam and fourth in the AA at Regionals and qualified on to Nationals. Coach Bowers says, Allie is so beautiful to watch on bars and beam, but has potential to help us everywhere. We have been watching her for the past couple of years and feel she is going to blossom in college. Coach Bowers comments about this recruiting class: This class has the potential to be great! With their work ethic, skill sets, and determination, we expect big things from them. They are talented gymnasts, excellent students and wonderful young women. They have had tremendous success academically and competing at the Junior Olympic level. We are confident they have the ability and drive to continue the gymnastics team s pursuit of academic and athletic excellence.
