Chippenham and District Wheelers Time Trial Report 2017 The club again had a full year of club and open events, with a good turn out and thankfully few incidents. In the main it was also pretty dry for most events a side benefit of global warming? Several club members raced well across the season and several long standing records were broken, including some of the ladies records. As always, our thanks to all who officiate at the open and evening events and the family members and riders who marshal at the various points on the course where this is needed. As a reminder, without marshals we cannot race and although we have usually managed to be alright on the night, all riders should look to their conscience and marshal at least one event if not more. For 2018 with the new club website it is hoped to maintain a better record of assistance. The year began with the traditional Club Kilo at Castle Combe where the weather forecast became more accurate as the rain arrived and the wind got up with the temperature dropping by several degrees in the space of half an hour. Paul Freegard appeared on the Gazelle with his children who did not seem convinced of their need to be in attendance. Considering the weather there was a good turn out, especially for the children with a balance bike being paced by Dad, several fixed bikes on show, a Brompton and a tandem. Simon Kay again won the event, the short distance really suiting him but to be fair he has performed well at 10 and 25 mile distances as well. The medium gear event is our first time trial of the season. The Racing Secretary turned out on his new fixed gear bike to discover that despite the correct gear ratios it wasn t quite within the limits (again), which handed victory to Jeremy Tyzack for another year. In 2017 we had 345 entries in the club evening events (versus 380 in 2016) and the Jack Nunn drew 195 entries (compared with 150 in 2016) with 43 club members riding across the 12 events (compared with 31 in 2016). So overall I would say that the popularity of time trials within the club is stable with a number of new riders who it is hoped will continue into 2018 now that they have given it a go. Competition was again fierce across the series with Simon Cox, Sue Crane, Emma Angove, Paul Winchcombe and Simon Kay all drawing points showing improvements on last year s handicaps. In the end Sue Crane won the Jack Nunn on points, a fair reward for her persistence and turning out in all weathers. Simon Kay and Simon Cox fought hard for the Jack Nunn on with Simon Cox winning with an average time on his 6 best events of 22:59 against Simon Kay s 23:17. We had remarkably few incidents this year, although Les Liddiard managed to hit the largest pot hole on the course during the Nixon Cup 50 mile event and broke his collarbone which disrupted the event slightly. Riders had to be reminded about cutting the corner on the turn after the M4 bridge after some particularly poor riding and it is strange how horses, cars and bicycles always seem to turn up at the same moment at the tightest parts of the course. It did need a PB by Simon in the Welsh 50 Mile Time Trial to get the result and there were significant mind games going on prior to the event with text and email exchanges (oh yes and an exchange of words on the course when Simon overtook Paul which is a peculiarity of a 2 lap event). If anyone thinks the Jack Nunn calculations are difficult then they should look the BAR calculations as they have to be compared against Veteran standard times. Once again, SAS entries for the 3-Up formed the backbone of the event. The season started with the early season WTTA Hardriders event on U601 run by Paul Freegard. The Open 10 run by Paul Winchcombe ran this year using the U85 course and remaining with Little Somerford as the HQ. The Open 25 was run again by Paul Winchcombe on U86/25. Nick Ferris was the Secretary for the traditional Hill Climb up Bowden Hill which always seems to attract spectators intent on seeing pain and suffering. Paul Winchcombe stood in as organiser after Nick s unfortunate accident and again was beaten into last place. Again, support numbers were down on 2015 as the weather was once again miserable and we all got very wet. Andy Cook ran the end of season 3-Up for the 36th consecutive year (with Paul Winchcombe doing the entries and start sheets as Andy found himself treble booked for the weekend) and was blessed with a dry and almost windless day. The new course using U57, after traffic calming on the proposed course meant that the course could not be used for a 3 Up, worked well being slightly shorter and flatter. The event organisers of all Club Open Events would like to thank all the marshals, tea ladies/men, cake makers, pushers off, result board producers and last but not least timekeepers. Once again, without your help these events would not take place. If any readers are not sure what all these jobs entail, please volunteer for the next Club event and we would be delighted to show you! The Gary Woodward Trophy awarded to the fastest club member in the Club s Open 25 event and the Ted Barlow Cup for the club member gaining the highest number of points in the Western Time Trial Association Hardriders series (long, hilly time trials) competitions were held again. Andrew Spearman won the Gary Woodward Trophy, just missing out on going under the hour on the U86/25 (Minety) course which is a very creditable time. Andrew Spearman alsowon the Ted Barlow by a few points from Paul Winchcombe and no other Chippenham Wheelers completed the required 6 events.

According to the CTT website Chippenham Wheelers entered 166 times across the season (although there were some DNS) with 37 riders. The 3 Up will have contributed some new names to this listing such as Andy Weaver who was persuaded out after being entered by his mates in the pub. Perhaps not surprisingly Andrew Spearman, Paul Freegard, Emma Angove, Simon Cox, Andy Cook, Jamie Currie and Paul Winchcombe made up the bulk of our entries. This year Simon Cox was 65 th and Paul Winchcombe was 85 th in the 2 distance BBAR (50 and 100 miles) out of 305 qualifying riders. No one from the club entered a 12 hr event so there were not results in the BBAR 3 distance event. Some club and age group records were broken during the season and well done to those who broke them. Emma s rides are of note as some of these records have stood for a very long time. Paul Winchcombe managed to produce PB s at 10, 25, 50 and 100 miles (just in case he hasn t already told you) Club Records Age Group Time Snr (Lady) 10 miles Emma Angove 22:42 Snr (Lady) 25 miles Emma Angove 56.53 Snr (Lady) 30 miles Emma Angove 01:19:22 MENS 60 64 years 10 Miles Paul Freegard 23:26 60 64 years 25 Miles Paul Freegard 57:09:00 60 64 years 30 Miles Paul Freegard 01:20:28 55 59 years 10 Miles Paul Winchcombe 21:14 40 44 years 25 Miles Paul Winchcombe 52:41:00 45 49 years 25 Miles Paul Winchcombe 52:41:00 50 54 years 25 Miles Paul Winchcombe 52:41:00 55 59 years 25 Miles Paul Winchcombe 52:41:00 50 54 years 50 Miles Paul Winchcombe 01:56:06 55 59 years 50 Miles Paul Winchcombe 01:56:06 50 54 years 100 Miles Paul Winchcombe 04.04:32 55 59 years 100 Miles Paul Winchcombe 04:04:32 Note: Paul Winchcombe set these times as a 57 year old
