The Panthers have not played six consecutive true road games since 2001, a season in which the schedule was rearranged due to cancellations in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Eastern will be making their first trip to Oxford, Ohio. Miami was the preseason favorite in the Mid-American Conference s East Division and has managed to score at least two goals in each of its first seven games this season. Eastern and Western will meet for the 14th consecutive year Sunday. Last season, EIU snapped a four-game (0-3-1) winless streak in the series with an overtime win in Charleston. Kaitlin Sullivan scored the golden goal. The Panthers are not scheduled to play at home again until Oct. 8. But four of the final five regular-season games are slated to be played at Lakeside Field. Eastern was on the downside of such a contest Sept. 12 against UMKC. The Panthers enjoyed a 17-6 edge in shots, 10-3 advantage in shots on goal and 9-1 edge in corner kicks. But UMKC scored the game s lone goal in the 56th minute and the Kangaroos goalkeeper made 10 saves to keep EIU off the scoreboard. UMKC is a second-year program and the victory was only the second in team history. GERMANN CONNECTS ON SECOND CLUTCH PK OF THE SEASON Kristin Germann connected on a penalty kick with only 12 seconds remaining in regulation to break a scoreless tie and lift EIU to a 1-0 win against Belmont Sept. 10. Germann was knocked down from behind with the ball at her feet on the right side of the 18-yard box in the final minute. She was selected to take the penalty kick in part because she had already connected in a similar situation in the Aug. 22 overtime win against Evansville. Four of Germann s five career goals have now been game-winners. Germann is the first Panther since Trisha Walter in 2004 to connect on multiple penalty kicks in the same season. That year also marked the last time EIU as a team had two PK scores. Eastern had not scored in the final minute of regulation since the 2004 OVC Tournament title game at Samford, when Sharyne Connell scored the game-winner with 24 seconds remaining to lift the Panthers to their fourth consecutive tourney title. LORBERT LEADING THE LEAGUE IN GOALS AGAINST AVERAGE Kaylin Lorbert entered the week leading the OVC with a 0.52 goals against average, surrendering only four goals in 693 minutes played so far this season. She also ranked 30th nationally. Lorbert has also taken over as EIU s all-time leader in career GAA (1.02) and the active career leader in the OVC. SOLID START DEFENSIVELY Eastern has surrendered an OVC-low five goals in its first eight games. Around the conference, only SIU Edwardsville has given up fewer (three in six games). The Cougars are off to an impressive 5-0-1 start but aren t listed among the league leaders because they are not slated to play a full OVC schedule while continuing their reclassification process from NCAA Division II to Division I status. Eastern s two goals allowed through the first four games, four goals allowed through the first six games, and five goals allowed through the first eight games were each the fewest in program history. The program record for fewest goals against in a season is 17, established in 2005. That year, EIU gave up only four goals in its final 12 games after surrendering 13 in the first nine contests. Balek had been a constant at center back since joining EIU in time for the 2008 season. Balek left the field for the first time this season in the first half of the Belmont win, ending her streak of consecutive minutes played at 1,194 dating back to October 2009. Hillary Blake and Erika Prazma handled the center back duties with Balek playing in the midfield. Both players went the distance against Belmont and UMKC. Blake now sports the longest consecutive minutes played streak, at 675 dating back to the beginning of the Evansville win on Aug. 22. FARRELLY ENDS SCORING DROUGHT WITH HER FIRST GOAL Elise Farrelly snapped EIU s scoring drought at 316 consecutive minutes with her first-half goal in the overtime loss at Indiana State Sept. 5. Eastern had been shutout in three straight games since Kristin Germann s overtime game-winner against Evansville on Aug. 22. Farrelly s goal was the first of her collegiate career. It was an equalizer, tying the game at 1-1. She became the first Panther to score her first career goal this season. She was also the first EIU player to score her first goal in a road game since Ashley Streid in the 2009 season-opening win at IUPUI. SCORELESS DRAW REDUX The scoreless draw at Green Bay Sept. 3 was the ninth in program history but first since October 2008. Of those nine scoreless draws, six have come on the road. There has not been a scoreless draw at Lakeside Field since October 2006. Goalkeeper Kaylin Lorbert has now posted three of her nine career shutouts in scoreless draws. She made a season-high seven saves to help keep Green Bay off the scoreboard. Eastern Illinois Women s Soccer: A Tradition of Excellence

OVERTIME HEARTBREAK AT INDIANA STATE Eastern was only 26 seconds away from salvaging a draw in its Sept. 5 road game at Indiana State. But the Sycamores managed to score a golden goal in the final minute of double overtime to deal EIU a tough loss. Indiana State has now beaten the Panthers in overtime in each of the last two meetings in Terre Haute. Eastern is now 2-3-6 in overtime games under second-year head coach Summer Perala. Three of the Panthers first six games this season went to overtime, with EIU posting a 1-1-1 record in the extended affairs. Dating back to the final three games of the 2009 season, three of the Panthers last seven losses have come in overtime. LORBERT SHARES OVC KEEPER OF THE WEEK Kaylin Lorbert helped keep EIU in both of its 1-0 losses to Valparaiso and Eastern Michigan and she shared the OVC Goalkeeper of the Week award for her efforts. Lorbert finished the weekend with seven saves, making five against EMU. Lorbert has started each of the first eight games in goal this season, surrendering only four goals. She has surrendered multiple goals in only two of her last 12 starts dating back to 2009. HOME SCORING & UNBEATEN STREAK ENDS When the Panthers were shutout in their Aug. 29 loss to Eastern Michigan a pair of notable home streaks came to an end. The shutout loss snapped EIU s nine-game unbeaten (6-0-3) streak at home, as well as the team s streak of 14 consecutive regular-season home games with a goal. The Panthers had not lost at home since Sept. 6, 2009 (vs. Miami) and had not been shutout at home since Sept. 28, 2008. The goal scoring streak at home was the second-longest streak in program history. The longest streak was 24 from October 2001-2004. Additionally, EIU had not lost in 1-0 fashion at home since Sept. 5, 2008 (vs. Wright State). GERMANN S STARTING STREAK ENDS AT VALPO Kristin Germann came off the bench for the first time in her EIU career in the Aug. 27 loss at Valparaiso. Germann started all 20 games as a freshman in 2009, one of only four Panthers to do so, and the first two games of this year. Her 22-game starting streak was the third longest active run on the team. Kayla Doran started in her place. Germann has since returned the starting lineup full time but her minutes have been limited due to a muscle strain. IMPRESSIVE START Eastern jumped out to its first 2-0 start since 2001 and for only the fourth time in program history. The Panthers also started 2-0 in 1996 (9-0) and 1998. By shutting out both IUPUI and Evansville during the season-opening weekend, EIU opened with back-to-back shutouts for the first time in program history. Eastern also recorded consecutive shutouts against nonconference foes for the first time since 2002 (Evansville and Loyola). BALEK DEFENDER OF THE WEEK Sam Balek was named the Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week after going the distance at her center back position in both shutout victories during the season-opening homestand. It marked the second time in her career that she was recognized. Balek and the Panther defense did not surrender a corner kick opportunity in the first half of either game and limited the opposition to seven corners and eight shots on goal in 185 minutes of game action. GERMANN CONNECTS ON OVERTIME PK About five minutes into overtime of the Aug. 22 win against Evansville, Kristin Germann was knocked off her feet by an opposing defender while trying to make a play on a cross in the heart of the 18-yard box. It led to a penalty kick opportunity and Germann was selected to take the PK that she helped create. When she connected with a shot inside the right post, the golden goal lifted EIU its 21st overtime win in program history. EIU S OVERTIME WINS Year Opponent Score GW Goal 2010 Evansville 1-0 K. It marked the first time since a 2004 win at Samford that a penalty kick score was the difference in a 1-0 EIU victory. With the Evansville game being just the second of the 2010 season, it marked the earliest in program history that the Panthers posted an overtime win. However, EIU had opened seasons with overtime losses in 1997, 2002 and 2008. STREID & SULLY SCORE IN SEASON-OPENER Ashley Streid and Kaitlin Sullivan scored the goals in EIU s season-opening win against IU- PUI. Eastern topped IUPUI, 2-0, in its season opener for the second year in a row. The Panthers had never before opened consecutive seasons against the same team, much less beaten the same team in back-to-back season openers. Streid scored both goals in the 2009 win at IUPUI. She s the first player in program history to score the game-winning goal in the season opener of back-to-back years. She also joined Audra Frericks (2003 and 2004) as the only players in program history to score a goal in consecutive season openers. QUICK STRIKE IN SEASON OPENER Ashley Streid her game-winning goal in the season opener against IUPUI only two minutes and 20 seconds into the game. It was the quickest EIU goal to begin a game since Sharyne Connell scored two minutes and 11 seconds into a 2005 loss at Loyola. AN ASSIST IN HER FIRST COLLEGIATE GAME Freshmen Lauren Hoppensteadt and Caitlin Greene were in the starting lineup for both games during the season-opening weekend. Hoppensteadt helped setup Kaitlin Sullivan s goal in the IUPUI game for her first collegiate assist. Since 2003, Jessie Morgan (2009) and Trisha Walter (2003) are the only other EIU freshmen to record an assist in a season opener. HILLARY BLAKE S IRON WOMAN STREAK ENDS Hillary Blake left the field in the 54th minute of the season-opening win against IUPUI, ending her streak of consecutive minutes played at 2,525 dating back to October 2008. She went the distance in 25 consecutive games, a streak that began in the Oct. 17, 2008 overtime win at Tennessee Tech. Blake did not leave the field during game action in all of 2009. She s believed to be the first player in program history to play every minute of every game during a season. Eastern Illinois at the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament
