Timbits Trevor Dickson Memorial Kids Triathlon June 3, 2018 8:00 am noon Information for Participants and Parents Welcome The organizers of the Footstock Timbits - Trevor Dickson Memorial Kids Triathlon would like to welcome you to our event. If you are from outside Cochrane, welcome to our community. We hope you enjoy your stay here and have an opportunity to check out some of the great cafes, restaurants, shops and ice cream establishments our community has to offer. The Cochrane Kids Triathlon has been existence for 20+ years. So many years that we forgot when it actually started. The race was first initiated and directed for several years by Trevor Dickson. Trevor was an inspiration to many people in the Cochrane community and to the triathlon, cycling and yoga communities on a much wider basis. Trevor s main objective was to put on an event that encouraged participation, inspired lifelong fitness and was ultimately just plain fun. Following Trevor s lead, the organizers of the Footstock Kids Tri view each participant as a winner for simply having the passion, courage to come out and give their best on race day. We want all of you to take-away a love of the outdoors and a commitment to lifelong fitness. Thank-you for participating in our event! The following includes important information about our race that is required reading by all triathletes and parents. This information will make the race go much more smoothly for you. We recommend that you review the course map and check out (maybe even pre-ride or run) the course before Sunday morning. ** A message to all parents ** Please ensure your child s bike is roadworthy! Check the tires to be sure they are pumped up, lube the chain and make sure the brakes are working! A bike in good working order will make your athlete a happy athlete!! The good folks at Sport Chek will have bike mechanics on hand in transition for last minute MINOR adjustments, but this can only be done on a first-come, first-served basis. There will be a limited number of bicycle pumps available to pump up tires on race morning. Once the race has begun, please ensure your participation is limited to vocal support: Please stay out of the transition area and out of the way of the triathletes. o There are a number of good viewing spots around the transition area that will allow you to see your children participate without getting in their way and the way of others. o We provide volunteers in the transition area to help the younger triathletes find their bikes, put on shirts, tie their shoes if necessary. Despite the young age of some of our participants it is amazing how they can meet the challenge with very little assistance from others. Please stay OFF of the bike course! o All roads will remain open to traffic. To ensure athlete safety, please stay off of the bike course. Thank-you in advance for your understanding of these points and for your consideration in keeping the race course and transition areas free of spectators. Parking Please park in the East portion of the Spray Lakes Family Sports Centre parking lot. The triathlon transition area will be using the Southwest portion of the SLFSS parking lot.

Parents/Spectators Parents should go over the race with their triathlete(s) prior to the event. It is also important that the athlete(s) remember their race number, the number of lengths to be done in the pool, the number of loops on the bike course and where to turnaround on the run course. Parents should also help plan what the triathlete(s) will wear on the bike and run portion of the race. Once the race has begun, parents MUST STAY OUT of the transition area Parents and athletes may enter the pool from the front entrance. Parents may watch the swim from the pool spectator area. Parents can view the triathletes in transition from the festival area, on the bike course from the grass areas in the Bow River park, and the side of the road on River Ave and Griffin Rd. Please walk to these areas for spectating. Please stay out of the transition area and please do not drive on the bike course to ensure the safety of the athletes. Once the triathletes have finished the swim portion, parents/spectators can proceed with caution down to the transition and finish area in the SLFSS West parking lot. Please stay behind the barricades placed around the finish line. Athletes will head down the carpeted pathway to the transition area. Please be careful when running from the pool. Transition is the location where the triathletes go after the swim to pick-up their bike and their cycling gear (clothing, helmet, gloves, shoes, race number, etc.) and where they return after the cycle to start the run. Bikes need to be racked in the bike racks a half hour prior to the race start. * Parents please walk bikes to transition please park in the East parking lot of SLFSS. Bike racks are numbered based on age of participant there will be volunteers to help you rack the bikes in transition. *Picking up your bike after the race : Please pick up your bike via the south-east access to the transition area and only when volunteers indicate that it is safe for you to do so. For safety reasons parents are not allowed in the transition area once the race has begun. Volunteers will assist athletes find their bikes after the swim and help them with their gear The following clothing/gear should be with the triathlete s bike in the transition area: o Cycling helmet o Running shoes/cycling shoes o Race number o T-shirt/singlet (optional for females, mandatory for males) o Towel (optional to dry off after the swim) 3

Upon leaving the bike rack, the athlete must walk their bike to the mount line. *The mount line will be positioned at the beginning of the bike course. Once past the mount line, the athlete can then get on the bike and proceed onto the bike course. **Please exercise caution at the beginning of the bike course. There will be a short stretch of gravel, then a narrow paved path that will turn to the right onto the Bow River pathway heading West. Before re-entering the Transition Area, the athlete must get off the bike before the dismount line. A volunteer will assist with the dismounting and will return the triathlete s bike and helmet to the bike rack. *Athletes changing shoes for the run must leave their running shoes at their bike rack Swim Enter the pool to get ready for your heat via the north entrance. This will ease congestion with athletes heading to and from the transition across the South entrance to SLFSS. Following the swim, athletes will exit the pool via the back entrance and follow the carpeted path to the transition area. Entrance to the pool will be from the locker room only. Athletes will be marshaled to appropriate area for lane assignment. We will be using a WAVE start format. Please listen to the pool marshals for instructions. Swimmers will start from the deep end of the pool. Once you cross the timing mat your time will start Oldest age groups (14-15 yr olds) start at 8:00am with the youngest age group starting last. **Please swim in a counter-clockwise direction always staying to the right side of the lane. This will ensure minimal disruption of other athletes. Faster swimmers should attempt to pass slower swimmers at the end of the pool if possible. Faster swimmers may also pass down the middle of the lane (with caution), only as necessary. Volunteers will count laps for the swimmer and will let the swimmer know when to finish. When the swimmer has two lengths left, the volunteer will place a flutter board in the water to let the swimmer know that he/she must swim to the other side and back. *Swimmers are ultimately responsible for counting and completing the correct number of laps. Any stroke can be used. *Participation is the primary objective - Less proficient swimmers can use flutter boards, life jackets or water wings. Swimmers can hold onto the lane dividers and the edge of the pool if necessary. Volunteers will assist the swimmers out of the pool if necessary. Once out the water the athlete will proceed slowly (no running) out the back exit (deep end) of the pool, along the carpeted path to the Transition Area. Qualified lifeguards will be on duty in the pool area. Bike (refer to the Footstock Kids Triathlon course map) Athletes are encouraged to check out the route. Triathletes must walk their bicycles from the bike rack to the mount line. All corners and intersections will be manned by volunteers. Please listen to the volunteers for direction. Please slow down at all corners. Ride near the curb lane and pass slower riders on the left. NEVER PASS ON THE RIGHT! Cycling lanes will be designated by traffic cones on the Bow River pathway, River Ave., Griffin Rd. and the Bow River RV Park Rd.. *Please note that the bike course will have two-way vehicular traffic on all roads. When you bigare on your bike you MUST keep to the right side at all times. Any athlete who goes outside the pylons (or to the left of the pylons) will be immediately disqualified. 4

The cycle course is a 300m loop course for < 6 year olds. 6-7 yr olds complete an out and back 1.7 km course 8-9 yr olds complete 1 loop (4 km) of the entire course. The 10-11 age groups complete 1 loops (4 km) of the entire course. The 12-13 age groups complete 2 loops (8 km) of the entire course. The 14-15 year olds complete 2 loops (8 km) of the entire course. Athletes are responsible for knowing how many laps they must complete and for counting their own laps. Approved (Snell, ANSI or CPSC) bicycle helmets must be worn at all times. The chinstrap must be fastened before leaving the transition area and must not be undone before getting off the bike. Run (refer to the Footstock Kids Triathlon course map) o Athletes will leave transition and run across a grass path to the Bow River pathway. Once on the Bow River path, athletes will run West on the very left side of the path until their age-appropriate turnaround point. Older athletes will turn left at the River Ave bridge, head across the bridge and then East along the Riversong pathway. Athletes are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the run route. The course map is provided on the website. o Water/Aid stations will be located at the 500m & 1.5km points out and back. **You may NOT wear headphones at ANY time during the race** Wearing of headphones, ipods, mp3 players, or phones, etc. will result in immediate disqualification and removal from the race course. Post Event Celebration o The post race event will be held at the Footstock Festival area near the Transition area and finish line. Cochrane Tim Hortons has once again donated medals and food for all Kids Tri participants! Bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on the grass and enjoy food and the post-race atmosphere! Thanks We would like to thank Tim Hortons, Cochrane Lion s Club, the Town of Cochrane, SLFSS, Sport Chek and the staff at the Jayman BUILT Aquatic Centre for their assistance and generosity. Volunteers We have the best group of volunteers of any race in Alberta. This event would not happen nor be as successful as it is without the support of the many volunteers who donate their time and energy. We encourage you to show some gratitude towards the people who make this event happen every year. A thank you goes a long way. Good luck and have FUN! 5
