(Status as of 31.12.2011) 7,894 square miles (20,446 km 2 ) is the total surface area of our federal state, situated between Brandenburg, Saxony, Thuringia and Lower Saxony. 11 administrative districts and three urban municipalities form a modern and efficient administrative structure. 6,835 miles (11,000 km) of modern, fullydeveloped roads are available for goods Traffic in Saxony-Anhalt. /// Short distances to suppliers and markets: Saxony-Anhalt s modern transport infrastructure provides links to the trans-european road network. Four important motorways cross the federal state from north to south and from east to west. Around 82 % of federal roads and 34 % of main roads have been either renovated or completely redeveloped over the past few years. This means that companies have rapid links to metropolitan areas in Germany and to European growth markets. 373 miles (600 km) of navigable waterways link 18 ports and trans-shipment centres in Saxony-Anhalt and provide outstanding foundations for water transport. /// Perfect flow: Saxony-Anhalt is connected to the European waterway network through the unique waterway junction near Magdeburg. It connects the rivers Elbe, Saale, and the Mittelland Canal and offers an outstanding environment for water transport. The port of Magdeburg is the largest inland port in central Germany, equipped with a modern, trimodal container terminal for combined transport. This underlines the vital role of the location as an inland hub for the large sea ports on the coasts of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. 1,926 miles (3,000 km) of railway tracks in Saxony-Anhalt make the rail network one of the densest in the world. /// Next stop: Saxony-Anhalt. The federal state s railway network consists of around 1,240 miles (2,000 km) of track operated by Deutsche Bahn and around 620 miles (1,000 km) operated by private railway operators. The spine of the high-performance infrastructure consists of around 90 freight transport stations, like the Magdeburg-Rothensee rail interchange, the marshalling yard in Halle (Saale), and the Großkorbetha freight terminal. 16 railway operators provide the basis for safe and reliable rail freight transport in Saxony-Anhalt. 760,000 Tonnes of air freight were handled at Leipzig / Halle Airport in 2011. /// At DHL s European hub, flights depart for 58 different airports in 34 different countries and four continents 365 days a year, around the clock: Leipzig/Halle Airport has become the second-largest air freight hub in germany over the past few years. With Magdeburg- Cochstedt International Airport, saxony-anhalt also has another airport with optimal conditions for tourism, business travel, and air freight. Air transport in Saxony-Anhalt is rounded off by the 5 regional commercial airports.

Plastics, chemical semi-products and goods from the pharmaceutical, metal and electronics industries were all in particular demand. Around 70 % of all exports were shipped to European Union member states, predominantly to Poland, France, and Italy. A 4.5 % growth in the gross domestic product was achieved in the first half of 2011. /// Saxony-Anhalt s economy has the perfect structure for growth: The value of all goods and services produced in the first two quarters of 2011 was higher than the average for the whole of Germany. Saxony-Anhalt also recorded the highest rate of growth in any of the federal states in eastern Germany. This trend is continuing. Significant increases in turnover were recorded in all key sectors: metal and electrical industry, chemical industry, mechanical and plant engineering as well as in the food industry. 10,000 business start-ups have been accompanied by the ego. pilot network since 2004 on behalf of the Ministry of Science and Economic Affairs in Saxony-Anhalt. /// From the business idea to successful market entry: In Saxony-Anhalt, great value is placed on individual and competent consultation service for start-up companies. This comes in the form of the ego. joint start-up support programme. The federal state and the industry have joined efforts to provide tailor-made consultancy services, financing and subsidy offers, and start-up assistance for budding entrepreneurs. Incidentally, 3 % of these are female in Saxony-Anhalt much more than the German average. 3.85 e BN of subsidies have supported company investments and infrastructure projects in Saxony-Anhalt since 2000. /// Saxony-Anhalt supports the economy: A total of 3,996 projects with an investment volume of around b 14.94 billion were supported between 2000 and 30th of June 2011 thanks to the joint federal and state agreement Improvement of regional economic structures. This has allowed 169,446 jobs to be secured or created in Saxony- anhalt including 11,668 permanent jobs for women.

76 % of all employees in Saxony-Anhalt have successfully completed at least one specialised training course. /// Success requires clever minds: That is why companies appreciate the wide range of motivated and highly-qualified specialists in Saxony-Anhalt. For the people of Saxony-Anhalt, the completion of parallel training programmes is also a matter of course after their initial training. In terms of the level of further training for company employees in Saxony- Anhalt, the federal state is amongst the best in the country. 12 scientific and research institutes are closely linked to the economy, to universities, and to trades in Saxony-Anhalt. /// The urge for exploration has a long tradition in Saxony- Anhalt: It was here where the first colour film, synthetic materials and all-metal aeroplane were developed. Today, the federal state is home to around a dozen institutes and centres run by Fraunhofer, Leibniz and Max Planck research. A range of competence networks and business incubators support innovation transfer between science and industry and therefore support the research and development activities of companies located here. 54,903 students took advantage of the outstanding learning environments at the two universities and eight universities of applied sciences in Saxony-Anhalt during the winter Semester of 2011 / 2012. /// Study, live, work: Saxony-Anhalt offers the perfect environment to combine these three elements thanks to modern universities of applied sciences, no-fee university places and low costs of living. These benefits are attracting an increasing number of students. Around 30 % of first semester students come from west Germany whilst thousands of young people from all over the world choose to study in Saxony-Anhalt. This way, companies in Saxony-Anhalt have future specialists and managers right at their fingertips.

2.98 m 56.2 % of all children under the age of three visit child-care facilities or day-care centres in Saxony-Anhalt. /// Saxony-Anhalt is family-friendly: With a legal right to all-day child care and by far the highest child care rate out of any German federal state, Saxony-Anhalt offers parents the chance to combine work and family. The focus here is on qualified care for infants. 84.7 % of employees at the 1,724 day-care centres have completed specialist pedagogical training. Saxony-Anhalt invests b 3,186 per child in child care, the third-highest amount in Germany. 4 UNESCO World Heritage Sites attest to the past significance of the heartland of German history with over 60,000 cultural monuments. /// History is made in Saxony-Anhalt: Authentic and unique evidence of this rich history can be found all over this region. The most outstanding examples are the Bauhaus and Meisterhäuser in Dessau-Roßlau, the Luther sites in Wittenberg and Eisleben, the Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz and the "Stiftskirche", castle and old town of Quedlinburg. All of them belong to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. people visited Saxony-Anhalt in 2011. The number of overnight stays also grew by 3.1 % to 7.07 million. This makes tourism an important factor in the economy of Saxony-Anhalt. As it has been the case for many years, the most popular destination is the Harz Mountain region.
