2008-09 PREVIEW NOTEBOOK JUST TWO WINS AWAY: Head Coach Lisa Ryckbosch is just two wins away from becoming UIC s winningest coach in school history. Ryckbosch has recorded an 88-89 (.497) mark in six seasons. The current record belongs to Eileen McMahon with an 89-135 (.397) overall record. Ryckbosch already owns the winningest percentage in school history. RETURNING FIREPOWER: UIC returns four starters and nine letterwinners back on the court in 2008-09. Included in the returning firepower is 2007-08 All-Horizon League Second Team honoree junior Jessie Miller. Also returning are juniors Briana Hinkle and Cassie Johnson. Hinkle finished the year ranked in several Horizon League categories while Johnson led the league in blocks (44). Senior Nikki Grobecker was powerful under the boards with 6.6 rebounds per game, ranking fourth in the league. Seniors Meghan Hutchens and will also contribute this season. Hutchens averaged 5.2 points per game, while Hluska totaled 17 blocks on the season. IMPACT PLAYER: Junior Jessie Miller has provided the Flames with offensive firepower since she stepped on the court her freshman year. Last year, Miller led UIC and finished tied for seventh place with 14.2 points per game last. Miller also ranked fourth in the league with 2.1 three-pointers per game and finished ninth in steals per game (1.8 spg). Miller currently ranks ninth in the UIC career record book with 98 three-point field goals made. NEW FACES: UIC welcomes three freshmen to this year s squad from three different states. All three newcomers are diverse players that are capable of playing two positions. Jasmine Bailey is a 5-8 guard/forward from St. Louis, Mo. Bailey, a three-time Suburban East All-Conference recipient, scored over 1,000 points for Normandy High School, while leading being named Suburban East Conference Player of the Year twice. Heidi Dahnke, a Martinsville, Ill. native, is a guard/forward that helped guide her team to two Little Illini Conference Championships. Kiara Strickland, a 6-1 guard/forward from Minnesota, scored over 1,500-career points, helping Roosevelt High School to a first-place Mid-section championship. ON HER WAY TO 1,000-CAREER POINTS: Jessie Miller doubled her scoring production last season with 421 points, 156 more than her rookie season. If Miller matches her total number of points in 2008-09, she will reach the 1,000-point plateau during her junior year. BIGGER LINEUP: Unlike recent years, the 2008-09 lineup will not only have taller players, but the option to play a bigger lineup. In addition to five returners that are six-foot or taller, freshmen Kiara Strickland and Heidi Dahnke each measure in at 6-1. NEW ADDITIONS: After serving as the Director of Basketball Operations for the last two years, Jacob Morgan will step up as an assistant this year after the departure of Amanda Reese. Morgan joins the Flames with more than seven years coaching experience and will be a positive addition to UIC s staff. Replacing Morgan as the Director of Basketball Operations is Kristin Marco. Marco, a Wisconsin native, played four years for the Akron basketball team where she was named a 2005-06 co-captain. Meghan Hutchens READY TO SHINE: After sitting out her freshman year due to injury, St. Louis native Shameia Green will finally have an opportunity to show off her talent on the floor. Green, a standout at Normandy High School in Missouri, was expected to provide an extra offensive weapon for the Flames her rookie season, but was forced to cheer from the sidelines last season. Before arriving in Chicago, Green guided Normandy to two district championships and an elite eight appearance. The 5-7 guard was also named conference Blue East Conference Co-Player of the Year in 2006. NEW OPPONENTS: Before tackling the Horizon League schedule, UIC will face Canisius, Florida Atlantic, Cal Poly State and potentially two teams in the Maggie Dixon Surf N Slam Tournament for the first time in school history. SIX STRAIGHT HOME GAMES: The Flames play its first six games of their 2008-09 campaign at the UIC Pavilion. This bodes well for UIC since the team won nine games at home last season, including non-conference victories over Big Ten Northwestern, Northern Illinois, Eastern Illinois and Bucknell. (want to put home game stats in when I get game files) The Flames also scored a big double overtime win over Milwaukee. The last time UIC beat the Panthers at home was on Jan. 17 2006. MOTTO: With this season s motto shaped around a strong work ethic and teamwork, the players know that these traits are what it takes to ultimately reach their goals. The team understands that they have assembled the talent that is necessary to be competitive, but they know that without working hard and working together they won t end up where they want to be at the end of the season, said head coach Lisa Ryckbosch. MAGGIE DIXON SURF N SLAM: The team will have the opportunity to play in a tournament this year in San Diego that holds a special meaning to women s basketball and head coach Lisa Ryckbosch. UIC competes in the 2008 Maggie Dixon Surf N Slam Tournament in San Diego, Calif. on Dec. 28 and 30 where they will potentially face Long Island, New Mexico State or San Diego in its pool. The tournament honors the late Army coach Maggie Dixon whom Ryckbosch coached alongside during her days at DePaul. Maggie was a colleague and a dear friend of mine, said Ryckbosch. We will honor and carry on her legacy by going out to San Diego and playing hard. BLOCK PARTY: UIC racked up 56 more blocks (130-74) than its opponents in 2007-08. The Flames led the league, averaging 4.3 blocks per game in all contests. UIC also totaled 49 more blocks (86-37) than its Horizon League opponents last season, averaging 4.8 blocks per game. SOLID PERFORMANCE: In addition to leading the league in blocks, UIC also finished the 2007-08 season ranked first in defensive rebounds (26.6), rebounding offense (39.1) and field goal percentage defense (.384).

2008-09 HEAD COACH LISA RYCKBOSCH SEVENTH SEASON 88-89 (.497) TWO WINS AWAY FROM BECOMING UIC S WINNINGEST COACH IN SCHOOL HISTORY When Lisa Ryckbosch took over the helm for the UIC women s basketball team in 2002, the Chicago native was ready to make school history and turn the Flames into a Horizon League contender. In just six years, Ryckbosch is just two wins away from becoming the winningest coach in school history (88/89-.497). She has tallied 88 wins and guided the squad to its first-ever postseason appearance at the WNIT in 2007. Ryckbosch has also steered the Flames to their firstever Horizon League Tournament title game (2005), first-ever vote in the Associated Press Top 25 poll (Nov. 2002) and highest-ever Horizon League finish (2nd 2003, 2006). campaign, on the way to the Flames first-ever second-place conference finish in 2002-03. Ryckbosch came to UIC after spending 11 seasons on the coaching staff at DePaul University, where she served most recently as associate head coach under Doug Bruno. She had been instrumental in bringing top Chicagoland and national talent to the Blue Demons successful women s basketball program, including five players that competed in the WNBA. While at DePaul, Ryckbosch helped guide the Blue Demons to five NCAA Tournament appearances and three WNIT berths. DePaul owned a record of 186-140 during her tenure, while winning a pair of Great Midwest Conference titles (1989; 1991) and the first-ever Conference USA regular-season championship in 1996. Prior to her stint with the Blue Demons, Ryckbosch, ironically, got her collegiate coaching start as a member of the UIC staff in 1990-91, serving under then-head coach Eileen McMahon. She has developed 12 all-league performers during her tenure with those players helping UIC set singleseason team records in most points scored (2,184, 2006-07), three-pointers made (200, 2005-06), most steals (344, 2002-03) most assists (492, 2006-07) and consecutive victories (11, 2006-07). Ryckbosch began her coaching career at Hillcrest High School in Country Club Hills, Ill., where she served as the Head Girls Varsity Basketball Coach and a math teacher for three years. Ryckbosch enjoyed a standout collegiate career at Loyola (Ill.). She was a four-year starter and twotime team captain for the Ramblers from 1980-84 and still ranks fourth on the school s all-time scoring (1,296) and rebounding (765) charts. She played an instrumental role in leading Loyola to a school-record 23 wins and the inaugural North Star Championship now the Horizon League - in 1984. The Flames also broke the school record for most wins in a season (19, 2006-07). After a record breaking season in 2007-08, Ryckbosch and the Flames experienced an rebuilding year in 2008-09. In 2007-08, Ryckbosch watched her hard work pay off as seniors LaShonda Grant, Krystal Hugelier and Jacquay Holmes each hit the 1,000 career-point plateau. Ryckbosch has built UIC into a successful program by attracting top student-athletes. Her extensive knowledge of the Windy City, has allowed her to lay down the recruiting groundwork to keep the top recruits from the talent-rich Chicagoland area close to home. Ryckbosch enjoyed a great start to her UIC head coaching career as the Flames posted 17 wins in 2002-03, which was the secondmost in school history and the most victories since the 1995-96 campaign. The team also tied the school-record for Horizon League wins with 11 during her rookie Ryckobosh was inducted into the Loyola University of Chicago Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006 and the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference (GCAC) Hall of Fame in 2007. Ryckbosch is married with two children. Her husband Bart, a native of Belgium, is an archivist at the Art Institute of Chicago. Ryckbosch s oldest son, Steven, is entering his second year at Georgetown University, while Peter is entering high school at St. Ignatius Prep School just down the street from the Flames Athletic Center. The Ryckbosch family makes their residence in the Old Irving neighborhood on Chicago s North Side.
