Welcome to MUR Motorsports
Welcome to MUR Motorsports Thank you for your interest in MUR Motorsports. In this prospectus, it is with pleasure I present detailed information on the team, a strategy for the future and sponsorship opportunities. Since the inception of the Formula SAE-A event, MUR has built a host of cars that consistently achieve high levels of performance. A consistent drive for innovation, understanding and ever higher performance is reflected in the team s current world ranking of 8th among 511 international teams. The aim of MUR2016 is to win the Formula SAE-A event in Melbourne in December. To achieve this, a truly world class concept is being developed while maintaining the continued focus on reliability and testing which is so critical to performing at the top of this class. What is Formula SAE? Formula SAE is a student design competition organized by SAE International (formerly Society of Automotive Engineers) since 1979. Today more than five hundred teams compete across twenty major international events that crown year-long preparations and attract thousands of spectators. Each team designs, builds and tests a prototype open wheel race car for a fictional car manufacturing company with the non-professional weekend autocross racer customer in mind. Therefore, Formula SAE encourages holistic and practical development of skills and knowledge essential in contemporary automobile industry. By merging engineering abilities and commercial perspective, each team works through all stages of the product development cycle from research & design, manufacturing, testing through to finance and marketing. The challenges imposed by formula racing pushes MUR s engineers to utilise their technical knowledge and continually seek creative and elegant solutions to real world applications in a highly technical environment, ultimately driving us to perform at our best at the Formula SAE Australasian event held in Melbourne, Victoria. «Formula SAE encourages holistic and practical development of skills and knowledge» Our ambitions however extend much further; as for the first time we will strive to send our combustion car to compete in an international competition and build an electric car. This is an important milestone in MUR history and a testament to our forward-looking philosophy, geared towards the long term. This vision can only continue to thrive with the generous support of academic mentors and corporate sponsors. I hope you will join us in our pursuit of handson engineering experience, innovative solutions and ultimately victory. The course is set for the future. Be part of it! Sincerely, William Page Chief Engineer Projects like these put students [who participate] two or three years ahead of students who don t Alan Mulally, Ford CEO
Our vision Our vision is to become a world class leader in FSAE In everything we do, we believe in pushing the limits of design and innovation; we believe that engineering excellence should be the norm. The way we achieve this is by immersing ourselves in a diverse and multidisciplinary team structure which encourages ambition, drive and discipline. Our cars are the ultimate expression of these aspirations. The Team MUR Motorsports represents the University of Melbourne within the Formula SAE competition. Our team was established in 2000 and has competed in the Australasian competition (FSAE-A) every year to the present. Through the teams continuing endeavours, we have achieved an international ranking of 8th among all the Formula Student Combustion teams from (as of) the latest world ranking. As an entirely student-run entity, we are responsible for every aspect of the project; from the design and manufacture of the race car to managing the business and finance of the organisation. The huge success of MUR Motorsports can be attributed to the development of a team comprised of bright students from various disciplines and expertise. This year, MUR Motorsports is extremely proud to introduce its new Marketing team. Comprised of students from the University of Melbourne s School of Business and Commerce, we aim to launch the MUR brand on a global stage and sit amongst the ranks of the world s best FSAE teams. «MUR Motorsports is extremely proud to introduce its new Marketing team comprised of business and commerce students» If you aren t going all the way why go at all Joe Namath The history of MUR over the past 15 years has placed the 2016 team in a position to no longer chase a vehicle capable of a podium, but of winning the event. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts Aristotle MUR is made up of talented and dedicated individuals, each extremely capable in their own right; it is when we coalesce as a team that we can truly achieve our fullest potential. Aristotle s phrase aptly captures this synergy we experience in the team space. Part of what makes this synergy so effective is the underlying friendships developed within our team. «We have achieved an international ranking of 8th among all the FSAE combustion teams in the world»
Recent Results Future Plan Over the years MUR has placed well within a number of individual categories of the overall competition. Highlights include: 2015 1st - Endurance 2nd - Overall Standing 3rd - Acceleration 2014 3rd - Endurance 4th - Overall Standing MUR is growing rapidly having implemented its first ever Junior Engineers Programme. The Junior Engineers Programme allows students to gain some experience in car design before commencing their final year. This has not only given the team greater momentum coming into the 2016 season, but has also shifted the culture of MUR; focusing more on knowledge transfer and mentoring. This is an exciting time for MUR; with more student engagement than ever before, the team aims to raise the bar and take MUR to the world stage. To improve competition performance, the 2016 vehicle will utilise a single cylinder engine, significantly reducing the overall mass of the car, thus improving its performance in the narrower and tightercornered tracks seen at the competition. To further reduce mass, and effectively package the suspension and aerodynamic components on the vehicle. The team is looking to develop a carbon fibre monocoque. In combination with significant development in the combustion vehicle, the team is preparing to build an electrically powered vehicle to compete in the same competition. This will feature student designed motor controllers, control systems, batteries, battery management systems, high-voltage electronics and sensor networks. Promoting Women in Engineering 2013 Winner - Bosch Best Instrumentation Award 2nd - Acceleration 3rd Endurance 3rd - Overall Standing School Visits The MUR team sees an increasing number of highly capable female engineers join the team each year. This year, we will be encouraging the presence of women in engineering and increase awareness about the amazing contributions women have made to engineering. Previous Years Results 2nd - Acceleration in 2012 3rd - Autocross in 2012 2nd - Fuel Economy in 2011 3rd - Presentation in 2011 2016 GOALS Win FSAE-Australasia Achieve Top 5 Globally «In 2015, MUR has achieved its highest global ranking in MUR history moving up to 8th place out of 511 entrants, a considerable improvement on our 2014 global ranking of 27» MUR plans to work closely with the Melbourne School of Engineering in hosting and visiting high school student-groups throughout the year as part of our community involvement. We will welcome schools to visit our campus and tour our workshop and offices. Students will get an insight on the benefits of further education and particularly what is offered in the field of Engineering. We are also working hard to establish an MUR ALUMNI Club in 2016!
Sponsorship Without the contributions we receive from our generous sponsors, MUR would not have achieved our current levels of successs. Sponsors facilitate the design & manufacture of the vehicle and allow us to race under a globally-recognized brand. The benefits of becoming a sponsor: Brand Exposure For the first time, MUR will have its own marketing team with the sole responsibility of enhancing the MUR brand and helping us to represent your name with respect and professionalism. Heightened brand and product visibility among University of Melbourne students, faculty and wider community including high schools we visit). Access to Graduates Becoming a sponsor will connect your business with some of the University of Melbourne s brightest and most talented students. It gives you the opportunity to interact with engineering and commerce students and to identify high achieving prospective employees. Access to the University of Melbourne The Faculty of Engineering often seeks our feedback regarding software and products when looking to innovate and expand. Having you as a partner will make us your advocate and will connect you to Australia s most prestigious University. Positive media exposure through coverage of MUR at key events we attend or host: Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix. Melbourne Knowledge week. FSAE competition. MUR Seminars etc Brand Visibility on our Social Media, Website, car, uniform and promotional material. Use of the race car for display purposes and the team for promotional material.
