GNAC RED LION PLAYERS OF THE WEEK Offense Griff Robles, Dixie State (QB, 6-5, 230, Sr., Spanish Fork, UT Utah) rushed for 217 yards and three touchdowns and passed for 267 yards and one score leading the Red Storm to a 28-19 home win over Humboldt State. His 484 yards in total offense is the third highest singlegame total in GNAC history and is rushing total ranks 11 th all-time in conference history. He is the first player in conference history to rush and pass for at least 200 yards in the same game. Robles scored on runs of two, 21 and 50 yards in the first, second and fourth quarters, respectively. The latter touchdown came with 7:56 remaining after the Lumberjacks had pulled to within two points with 9:41 left on a 39-yard field goal by Matt Bruder. Defense Steven Fanua, Azusa Pacific (LB, 6-1, 227, Jr., Milpitas, CA California) had 15 tackles and a key forced fumble to lead the Cougars to a 24-17 road win at Central Washington as the Cougars took over first place in the GNAC. Ten of his 15 tackles were solos and he also broke up two passes. His forced fumble, which he also recovered, came with 2:59 left in the fourth quarter after CWU had executed its second successful onside kick of the game. Following Fanua s recovery, APU got two first downs to run out the remaining time left on the clock and preserve the victory. Special Teams Tarik Myles, Azusa Pacific (KR, 5-6, 152, Fr., Rancho Cucamonga, CA Summit) and Jesse Correa, Western Oregon (5-10, 185, So., Mililani, HI St. Louis)... Myles gave the Cougars the lead at 14-10 in the second quarter returning a kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown. He also had a 22-yard return on another kickoff... Correa kicked field goals of 46, 48 and 32 yards in the Wolves 30-16 win against Simon Fraser. His 48- yarder was the third longest this fall in the GNAC and his 46-yarder equaled the fourth longest. Honorable Mention True-freshman Devauntee Hoffman, Western Oregon (5-11, 190, Fr., Portland, OR) rushed for 126 yards on 18 carries, averaging seven yards per carry. He also caught one pass for nine yards... Gustave Benthin, Western Oregon (DL, 6-2, 305, Sr., Knappa, ID) had six tackles, including three for losses of 12 yards. Two of them were sacks for losses of 10 yards. 1

MAXIMIZING YOUR OPPORTUNITIES: Azusa Pacific didn t have a first down, ran only six offensive plays (three of them in the final minute of the half) and had possession of the football for just 1 minute, 48 seconds of the 30-minute first half in their 24-17 road win at Central Washington. Those numbers very well could be historic in the history of college football. Still the Cougars led 14-10 at the break scoring on a first-quarter 50-yard interception by C.J. Broussard and on a 92-yard kickoff return by Tarik Myles. Both of their offensive series of the half were 3- and-outs. CWU, which successfully executed the first of two onside kicks after a second-quarter field goal, had a 55-6 edge in snaps and a 186-16 lead in yards in the half. The Wildcats finished the game with an 80-42 lead in plays and a 311-191 advantage in total offense. Azusa s 42 total plays equaled the lowest in conference history. Western Washington allowed just 42 snaps to Nebraska Omaha in a 2004 non-conference game. THREE-POINTERS: Matt Bruder of Humboldt State connected from 49 and 39 yards in the Lumberjacks 28-19 loss to Dixie State. Bruder leads the GNAC in field goals from 40 yards, making five (42, 46, 44, 46 and 49 in that order). He is 11 of 16 overall and Saturday s 49-yarder is the second longest this season in the conference. Jamie Cacciatore of Azusa Pacific, who has a 52-yarder, has the best field goal percentage in the GNAC, making 10 of 12 and is tied with Correa (8 of 11 on 3-pointers) for most kick-scoring points with 50. 3,079 AND COUNTING: In less than two full seasons in the GNAC, Azusa Pacific s Terrell Watson has rushed for 2,382 yards to rank sixth in conference history in career rushing yards. The GNAC record is 2,836 by Jason Taroli of Western Oregon between 1997 and 1999 and in 2001. Including 697 yards in his freshman season before APU joined the GNAC, Watson now has rushed for 3,079 yards. He had 71 yards in 23 carries Saturday. All but three of the carries came in the second half... As a provisional member, APU athletes are not eligible for NCAA records. However, Watson s second-half (272 yards) and fourth-quarter (232) rushing totals in APU s Oct. 12 game against Simon Fraser are better than the current NCAA records. GNAC COMPETES IN SUPER REGIONAL III: The GNAC competes in Super Regional III. Also part of the 44-team Super Regional III is the MIAA (Mid-America), the Great American Conference and the Northern Sun. Six teams from each of the four regions qualify for the playoffs. EARNED ACCESS: Earned access berths are awarded to conferences which have a team ranked in the Top 8 in their region. Six teams from each region qualify for the playoffs. The impact of earned access is that if a team is ranked seventh or eighth, but qualifies for the earned access berth, it would qualify for the playoffs, displacing a team ranked above it in the top six. With only five playoffeligible members, the GNAC does not currently receive an earned access berth. Azusa Pacific is a provisional NCAA member and is not eligible for the playoffs. GAME RECAPS Azusa Pacific 24, Central Washington 17 (at Ellensburg): Azusa Pacific ran its win streak to four games all by single digit margins and moved a game ahead of both Central Washington and Western Oregon in the conference race... After losing its first four conference games last season, the Cougars have now won 10 of their last 11 conference contests... The Cougars controlled the football for just 8 minutes, 8 seconds through the opening three quarters, but maintained possession for most of the fourth quarter (11:44 to 3:16), scoring the clinching touchdown on an eight-yard run by Terrell Watson with 9:57 remaining. That run finished off a 90-yard, 11-play drive... Watson ended up with 71 yards on 23 rushes after touching the ball just three times in the opening half when the Cougars ran just six plays... In all APU had just 191 yards in total offense on 42 plays. CWU netted 311 yards on 80 snaps... Cougar quarterback Dasmen Stewart completed six of 11 passes for 95 yards as Ed Dillihunt had four receptions for 61 yards. Charles Hall led CWU with 80 yards on 22 rushes after replacing Jordan Todd who was injured. Todd had 44 yards on 15 rushes, including a twoyard touchdown run early in the second quarter, before leaving the game.. APU s first two touchdowns came on defense and by its specialty teams... CJ Broussard returned an interception 50 yards for a touchdown to give the Cougars an early 7-0 lead. Then after CWU went ahead 10-7 on a 20-yard field goal by Sean McDonald, Tarik Myles had a 92-yard interception for a touchdown. Myles finished the game with 114 yards on two returns... Watson s TD gave APU a 24-10 lead. Central shaved its deficit to seven points as Jordin Kinnune hauled in a nineyard touchdown pass from Jake Nelson with 3:09 left... CWU then executed its second successful onside kick of the game. But on the next play linebacker Steven Fanua forced and recovered a fumble and the Cougars then got two first downs to run out the clock... With its defense spending most of the time on the field, two APU players had awesome tackle totals. Safety Tyler Thornton had 19 including 10 solos. Fanua had 15, also earning 10 solos. He also broke up two passes... DBs Stan Langlow and Deionte Gordon and linebacker Ridge Nielsen each had six tackles for the Wildcats. Western Oregon 30, Simon Fraser 16 (at Monmouth): Western Oregon got a pair of 100-yard rushing performances from Devauntee Hoffman and Joe Harris and three field goals from Jesse Correa in defeating Simon Fraser and remaining one game back in the conference race... Hoffman rushed for 126 yards on 18 carries and Harris netted 101 yards on 15 totes, including a 22-yard TD run in the second quarter to give the Wolves a 24-3 lead at the break... Correa then booted a 48-yard field goal on the final play off the third quarter to stretch his team s lead to 27-3... Simon Fraser scored both of its touchdowns in the final period as Kyle Kawamoto caught a 20-yard pass from Ryan Stanford and Stephen Spagnuolo scored on a oneyard run... Correa also had a 46-yard field goal in the second quarter and a 32-yard three-pointer in the final period... Western Oregon had a well-balanced attack on the afternoon netting 425 yards, 235 rushing and 190 passing. 2

The Clan got 293 yards from quarterback Ryan Stanford and 93 rushing yards, 65 from Chris Tolbert. SFU s Jamal Kett caught seven passes for 97 yards. Bobby Pospischil had six receptions for 38 yards and Kawamoto had 88 yards on five receptions. Tore Corrado had 160 yards on four kickoffs, including a 70-yarder... SFU linebacker Casey Chin had 16 tackles to lead all defensive players. LB Shane Kuenzi led the Wolves with seven stops. Dixie State 28, Humboldt State 19 (at St. George, UT): Quarterback Griff Robles led the Red Storm on touchdown drives of 77 yards (5 plays), 90 yards (8 plays), 96 yards (5 plays) and 76 yards (5 plays) accounting for much of the yardage himself in a 28-19 win over Humboldt State... Robles scored on runs of 2, 21 and 50 yards and also tossed a 28-yard touchdown pass to Mitch Frei... The Dixie quarterback finished the contest with 484 yards in total offense, becoming the first player in GNAC history to both rush (217) and pass (267) for at least 200 yards in the same game. His total offense of 484 yards is the third highest total in GNAC history and is 217 rushing yards is 11 th, first among quarterbacks... In all Dixie State netted a total of 550 yards, including 283 rushing. Humboldt State finished with 431 yards, including 285 by quarterback Kyle Morris who rushed for a net 31 yards and completed 19 of 34 passes for 254 yards... The Lumberjack points came on touchdown runs by Morris and Kash Johnson of nine and two yards and two field goals by Matt Bruder (49 and 39 yards)... HSU also had numerous other scoring opportunities, but twice came up empty inside the 10. Two other drives stalled at the 13... In addition to Robles, the leading rushers were HSU s Jamarie Sanders (18-76) and Johnson (16-72) and Dixie s Joel Davis (12-64)... The leading receivers in the contest were Dixie s Joe Don Duncan, who caught four passes for 121 yards and HSU s Kelechi Nwadibia who had six receptions for 108 yards... On defense, linebacker Jake Duncan led the Red Storm with 12 tackles, including 2 ½ for losses of 20 yards. One of those was a 16-yard quarterback sack... Linebacker Andrew Feaster and defensive end Silas Sarvinski each had 10 tackles for Humboldt. Sarvinski had two for losses of four yards. PREVIOUS RED LION PLAYERS OF THE WEEK Week of Sept. 2-8: Offense Ryan Stanford, Simon Fraser (QB, 6-3, 199, So., Phoenix, AZ) threw for 446 yards and three touchdowns as the Clan upset Humboldt State 41-27 at the Redwood Bowl handing the Lumberjacks just their third home loss in the past four seasons. Stanford completed 33 of 46 passes. His yardage total is the fifth highest single-game total in GNAC history. Defense Casey Chin, Simon Fraser (LB, 5-10, 214, Sr., Port Moody, BC New Westminster) had 10 tackles, including one for a loss of two yards, and a pair of fourth-quarter interceptions in the Clan s victory. His first interception, which he returned 70 yards, came on a first down from the Clan 19 with 2:51 left. He then sealed the victory with another interception with 48 seconds remaining. Special Teams Chris Campbell, Humboldt State (P, 5-11, 175, Jr., Granite Bay, CA) averaged 47 yards on six punts, including five that went inside the 20. His longest punt was 63 yards. Week of Sept. 9-15: Offense Terrell Watson, Azusa Pacific (RB, 6-2, 230, Jr., Oxnard, CA) rushed for 165 yards and two touchdowns as the Cougars extended their conference game win streak to five games with a 36-20 road win at Dixie State. Watson also surpassed the 2,000- yard career rushing mark increasing his total to 2,130. He also extended his streak of games with a rushing touchdown to eight and his streak of games rushing for 165 or more yards to four. Defense Deionte Gordon, Central Washington (DB, 6-1, 203, Sr., Seaside, CA Sacramento State) had three takeaways, setting up two of the Wildcats three touchdowns in a 20-7 home win against Western Oregon. Gordon set up CWU s second first-quarter touchdown with a 22-yard interception return to the WOU 20-yard line. He also had an interception late in the first half and then forced and recovered a fumble in the third period, leading to a 5-play, 43-yard touchdown drive. He also had five tackles and broke up a pass. Special Teams Jamie Cacciatore, Azusa Pacific (K, 5-8, 175, So., Orange, CA El Modena) booted a 52-yard field goal equaling the third longest in GNAC history in the Cougars 36-20 road win at Dixie State. The field goal was the 11 th 50- yarder in conference history and was just two yards shy of the GNAC record held by Western Washington s Michael Koenen. The NFL veteran booted a 54-yarder against Central Oklahoma in 2001. Week of Sept. 16-22: Offense Chris Tolbert, Simon Fraser (RB, 6-0, 190, Jr., Silver Springs, MD) and Ryan Bergman, Western Oregon (QB, 6-2, 175, Jr., Issaquah, WA)... Tolbert, a transfer from Central Connecticut, scored twice in the fourth quarter to power the Clan to a 21-14 road win at Central Washington. He rushed for 106 yards, including a 10-yard touchdown run which set up a game-tying two-point conversion pass from quarterback Ryan Stanford to Bobby Pospischil. Later in the period Tolbert caught a 27-yard TD pass from Ryan Blum after Stanford had handed the ball off to Blum as the Clan beat the Wildcats in Ellensburg for the first time since 1980. Tolbert caught a total of four passes for 38 yards... Bergman tied the GNAC and the WOU school record tossing six touchdown passes in a 51-32 home win. Bergman completed 23 of 32 passes for 417 yards. Bergman tied the school record set by Jim Bowlen in 1957 against Lower Columbia and the conference record set last season by SFU s Trey Wheeler against Dixie State. Defense Sean Barber, Azusa Pacific (LB, 6-1, 220, Sr., Edgewood, WA - Puyallup) had 15 tackles and two fumble recoveries as the Cougar defense held Humboldt State s offense scoreless in a 28-2 win. It was the second this season Barber has accounted for two of APU s takeaways in a game. Barber also had a pass breakup. Week of Sept. 23-29: Offense Griff Robles, Dixie State (QB, 6-5, 230, Sr., Spanish Fork, UT) and Jordan Todd, Central Washington (RB, 5-6, 186, So., Bellevue, WA Interlake)... Robles had 401 yards in total offense and accounted for six touchdowns leading the Red Storm to a 49-24 road win at Humboldt State. Robles completed 22 of 46 passes for 283 yards and three touchdowns and also rushed for 118 yards and three touchdowns. He scored on 3

runs of 1, 1 and 12 yards and tossed TD passes of eight yards to Mitch Frei, 26 yards to Joel Davis and 17 to Joe Don Duncan... Todd rushed for a GNAC-season high 189 yards and set up a first-quarter touchdown with a 53-yard run to lead Central Washington to a 7-3 win at Azusa Pacific. Defense Kraig Akins, Western Oregon (DE, 6-2, 270, Jr., Springfield, OR - Thurston) and Daniel Moffett, Dixie State (FS, 6-2, 215, Jr., Kayville, UT Davis)... Akins had 11 tackles, including three for losses totaling 21 yards as the Wolves held previously unbeaten Simon Fraser to just three field goals in a 30-9 win. Among Akins three TFLs were two quarterback sacks. He also forced two fumbles. Moffett had a GNAC-record tying three interceptions (for 56 yards) in Dixie s 49-24 win at Humboldt State. Moffett, who also had four tackles and broke up a pass, is the sixth player in GNAC history to record three interceptions in a single game. Specialty Isaiah Davis, Central Washington (DB, 5-10, 176, So., Bremerton, WA South Kitsap) had 100 return yards for the Wildcats, netting 66 on four punt returns and 34 on two kickoff returns and providing valuable field position in a 7-3 win at Azusa Pacific. Week of Sept. 30-Oct. 6: Offense Griff Robles, Dixie State (QB, 6-5, 230, Sr., Spanish Fork, UT) had more than 400 yards in total offense for the second week in a row leading the Red Storm to a 39-12 win against Simon Fraser. Robles finished with a GNAC season-high 427 yards, rushing for 176 yards and completing 13 of 27 passes for 251 yards. He contributed six touchdowns, scoring on runs of 15 in the first quarter and 34 in the third quarter and tossing TD passes of 9 yards to Randon Willard in the opening period, 11 to tight end Joe Don Duncan and 7 to Willard in the second quarter and 48 to Duncan in the third period Defense Isaiah Davis, Central Washington (DB, 5-10, 176, So., Bremerton, WA South Kitsap) tied a GNAC single-game record with three interceptions and also had seven tackles in a 21-13 road win at Humboldt State. Davis first interception in the third quarter came near midfield, however, the latter two came in the fourth period deep in Humboldt territory (at the 14-yard line on a second-and-three play from the 38 and at the 10-yard line on a first-and-10 play from the 30). Davis also broke up two other passes and had 104 return yards, including seven on one punt return, 80 on three kickoffs and 17 on the three interceptions. He is the seventh player in GNAC history to record three interceptions in the same contest. Specialty Jamie Cacciatore, Azusa Pacific (K, 5-8, 175, So., Orange, CA El Modena) was a perfect four of four of field goals converting from 40, 26, 28 and 26 yards as the Cougars edged Western Oregon 34-32. Week of Oct. 7-13: Offense Terrell Watson, Azusa Pacific (RB, 6-2, 230, Jr., Oxnard, CA) rushed for a schoolrecord 302 yards and a school and GNAC-record tying five touchdowns (1, 2, 70, 68 and 8) as the Cougars overcame a 23-3 halftime deficit to defeat Simon Fraser 44-36. In the fourth quarter alone, Watson rushed for 232 yards and four touchdowns. That included a 61-yard non-scoring run to set up his final touchdown. He also caught one pass for six yards to earn 308 all-purpose yards. Watson s per carry rushing average of 10.8 eclipsed the GNAC record for most yards per carry (min. of 20 attempts) of 9.7 set by SFU s Bo Palmer (20-194) three years ago against Dixie State. Defense Shane Kuenzi, Western Oregon (LB, 6-0, 200, So., Salem, OR West Salem) and Tyler Thornton, Azusa Pacific (FS, 5-8, 182, Jr., Bakersfield, CA - Centennial)... Kuenzi had a team-high 10 tackles in a 38-21 home win over Humboldt State. He also forced a fumble, had an interception and broke up a pass... Thornton had 12 tackles, including eight solos, and also broke up two passes in the Cougars eight-point home win over Simon Fraser. Specialty Jesse Zalk, Central Washington (WR, 5-8, 153, Fr., Battle Ground, WA - Prairie) had 217 all-purpose yards, including 113 on three kickoff returns and 104 yards on a GNAC season-high 14 receptions. In the second quarter, he returned a kickoff 53 yards to set up a 34-yard field goal by Sean McDonald. Zalk later helped CWU rally from a 17-3 deficit tying the game at 24-24 on a seven-yard TD reception with 2:28 left. He then set up a gamewinning 44-yard field goal with one second left with a 26- yard catch to the Dixie 29 with 14 seconds remaining. Week of Oct. 14-20: Offense Tyrell Williams, Western Oregon (WR, 6-4, 200, Jr., Salem, OR Cascade) caught five passes for 184 yards including touchdowns of 74 and 67 yards to lead the Wolves to a 46-34 road victory at Dixie State. Williams broke his own GNAC-record for most yards per catch (min. 5 catches) with his 36.8 average. He set the old GNAC record of 32.8 last season catching six passes for 197 yards in a game against Dixie State. Defense Austin Schnizler, Central Washington (DT, 6-3, 266, Sr., Ventura, CA St. Bonaventure/Idaho State) had three quarterback sacks for losses of 24 yards and he also tackled running back Stephen Spagnuolo in the end zone for a safety to lead the Wildcats to a 54-14 win at Simon Fraser. He finished the contest with five tackles, including four for losses of 25 yards and was also credited with a forced fumble. Specialty Matt Burke, Central Washington (P, 6-0, 192, Sr., Laguna, Hills, CA Cabrillo) averaged 43.3 yards on three punts and did not allow a return yard as CWU maintained its Top 20 national ranking in punt return defense, allowing just 3.4 yards per return. Burke also tossed a 54-yard TD pass to Deionte Gordon on a fake punt in the second quarter to give the Wildcats a 30-14 lead.
