OHIO HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL COACHES ASSOCIATION MINUTES OF WINTER MEETING MARCH 21, 2012 FAIRFIELD INN & SUITES ON OLENTANGY, COLUMBUS 12:30 PM 1. WELCOME - President Tom Barrick. 2. Bob Von Kaenel, Secretary led us in prayer. 3. ROLL CALL Bob Von Kaenel. Absent Rich Venuto. 4. FALL MEETING MINUTES Bob Von Kaenel - 1 st Walsh - 2 nd McBride to approve the minutes of the Oct. 17, 2011 meeting. 5. TREASURER S REPORT Pat Carroll - 1 st Bisutti 2 nd Liptrap to approve the Treasurer s Report. 6. GUESTS Jerry Williams and Rawlings Committee - Rawlings brought 6 representatives to the meeting to discuss the problems and corrections to their basketballs. You can return bad balls beginning June 1 st and more information will be detailed in Hooplines next issue. The return procedures will be explained. 7. MEMBERSHIP REPORT Pat Carroll gave the final membership numbers and asked for directors to turn in all applications in a more timely fashion next year. 8. EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING w/ Dr. DAN ROSS OHSAA Commissioner 1 st Past President Wally Vickers reported: 1) We discussed the quarter limits being adjusted to 110 quarters per season and 5 per night 2) Jerry Snodgrass explained the OHSAA position on the proposed Individual Workouts The OHSAA will be discussing this in their next meeting, and it will be sports specific. 3) Dr. Ross explained the Competitive Balance Proposal being discussed by the OHSAA 4) The times were established for all Awards Presentations on Championship Saturday. 5) The OHSAA Finance Committee is discussing the possibility of eliminating travel expenses if you do not sell 250-300 tickets 9. REVIEW PF ITEMS AND UPDATES President Tom Barrick 1) Tournament Voting Procedures were discussed 2) Odd Number Districts Please be sure to have Hall of Honor recipients in attendance at N/S Game when their awards will be presented 3) A reminder was given about awards being presented at the N/S Games. Joe Balogh passed out a sheet of when awards will be given that day. 4) GAC VOTING PROPOSAL A second reading was made in regards to the motion of giving the GAC Members voting privileges. A 3 rd reading/approval will be held at the Sept. Meeting. 10. DISTRICT DIRECTOR REPORTS District 1 District 2 District 3 District 5 Dan Gorski (Boardman) Concerns with the District I tournament site. (Unacceptable) Sean O Toole (St. Ignatius) Concerns with using clock for Time Out purposes; Concern with officials administrating Timeouts; Concerns with officials administrating the ball after Timeouts with the use of the Baseline (No Spot); Concerns with Rawlings basketball; Higher seed in tournament hosting 1 st Round games; Individual Workouts. Bob Walsh (Elyria) Regional Sites being split in D-I District 4 Tom McBride (Lake) Promote Super District or consistency in tournament format; Promote June 1-30 unlimited instruction days instead of Fall/Spring workouts. Matt Romick (River) Concerns with junior high numbers 6 th grade eligibility. Matt Combs (Vinton County) concerns with seeding procedure for tournament. (Closed Sectionals vs Super) Rich Hoyt (Summit Country Day) Major concerns with the quality of the Rawlings basketball. GAC 1 & 4 Pat Pavlansky (Canfield) Uniformed format of Sectional & District tournaments; More days for instruction during the Summer. GAC 2 & 3 Art Daniels (Westlake) Concerns with Seeding Procedure; Support Individual Workouts GAC 5 & 12 Dave Schlabach (Hiland) Would like to have extra quarters for jr. high players from programs that have problems with numbers. GAC 15 & 16 Jill Phillips (Princeton) Concerns with Regional Tournament being held at Wright St. (Poor venue for girls);would like to have the Regional tournament rotate between Cincinnati and Dayton; Have the District III tournament draw more centrally location. 11. 17. PAUL WALKER AWARD Bob Von Kaenel - The winner is Steve Williman (Liberty-Benton HS). This will be presented at the Division III Championship Game. 18. HOF MUSEUM REPORT - Doc Daugherty Doc reminded everyone about the Annual Banquet coming up in May at the Columbus Convention Center. 19. OHSBCA Gold/Silver Awards Doc Daugherty Doc stated there were 1,869 Gold and Silver student/athletes honored this year. Lewis Center Olentangy had the most honorees with 24 student/athletes. This is the most ever in one year. 21. OHSBCA Top 20 Awards Art Daniels Top schools and individuals were reported and will be posted in future Hooplines. 22. OHSBCA Clinic Report Dave Krauss Clinic Dates for Next Year: Sept. 23-24, 2012 at the Columbus Convention Center. 1) Dave reported on the past clinic, which was a huge success 2) Expenses were itemized. 3) The profit for this year s clinic was $2,600 dollars. The attendance was around 1,200 coaches. The OHSBCA applauds his efforts and appreciates the fine job Dave does running our clinic. 24. OHSBCA ASST. COY/ and Mr./Ms. Basketball winners for Hooplines. b. Needs director s information by Friday, April 1, 2012 for Hooplines. c. The OHSBCA will have 3 pages in the state tourney programs listing our award winners, along with a HOF Paul Walker page. d. Get Larry & Pat all pictures and biographical sketches on time. e. Stated that fall director reports to Hooplines are due September 1, 2012 f. The Ohio Army National Guard Contract provides: 1) All plaques for N/S Coaches and Players (96) total 2) Plaques for Boys/Girls Top 5 Academic Teams 3) Academic Team Pizza Parties (10) at ($100.00 each) 4) Plaques for all Coaches Scholarship Winners 5) Certificates for Academic All-Ohio Teams (80) 6) Advertising in Hooplines ($550.00 per year) 7) A check for $2,000 as well g. He asked about the executive summer meeting dates and their location. The date was tentatively set for July 15, 2012. h. Larry reported that the OHSBCA is the oldest High School Basketball Coaches Association in the Country having started in 1947-48. i. Larry reminded everyone there are NO elections this coming fall.
26. TOP 100 BOYS SHOWCASE Pat Carroll 1. When: April 21, 2012 2. Where: Capital University (Players should register beginning at 8:00am) 3. Deadline for Program Information/Alternates April 1, 2012 4. Send all additional information to Rich Venuto @ Louisville HS 5. The event will run similar to the past years. 6. Reversible practice jerseys, Coaches shirts and other expenses are being covered by Rawlings. 7. All players participating will pay a fee of $50.00 dollars 27. TOP 100 GIRLS SHOWCASE Dave Butcher 1.
