Intramural Sprts Basketball Rules ELIGIBILITY In rder t be eligible t participate in intramural activities, players must be current SMU students enrlled in ne r mre credit hurs, current Faculty/Staff, r members wh have purchased a current Dedman Membership. All participants must present a valid SMU ID r picture identificatin prir t participating in an intramural cntest. Class schedules, utility bills, credit card receipts, etc WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. NO EXCEPTIONS. Teams may add players t rsters at the game site until the first playff game is played. A team rster may nt exceed twenty (20) players. Fr each Intramural Sprt(s) there is a maximum and minimum number f players allwed. These numbers vary per intramural sprt/activity and they are knwn as rster limitatins. At n time will the Intramural Sprts Office accept an entry frm that des nt fit within the rster limitatins. Rster additins and deletins may be made thrughut the sprt seasn in the Intramural Office, r they may be cmpleted at the game site. During scheduled cntest(s), new players full names may be added at the game site up t the rster limitatins. If there is n space remaining n the team rster, names must be deleted and the new name f the team member(s) inserted int that rster spt. Please Nte: A participant may nt remve themselves frm a team and then be added t a different team. They are ineligible t participate until they return t the riginal rster. The full names, ID numbers MUST be clearly written n the apprpriate scre sheet fr the new team member t be added t the permanent rster. Players are nt eligible until this ccurs. If this prcedure is cmpleted prperly the Intramural Sprts Office will add and delete the player(s) t the permanent team rster. Nte: Rster deletins are permanent. The deleted player will nt be eligible t cmpete unless she/he is added back t the rster. Please Nte: The use f an ineligible player will result in the frfeiture f the prtested cntest in which the ineligible persn participated (IM General Rules and Regulatins f Play). Players are limited t rsters n tw Open teams and nly 1 Greek, Wmen s, CRec, r ResHall team. Players fund exceeding these limits will be ineligible frm all teams and the team using ineligible players may be sanctined with a frfeit fr the cntest. N rster additins/deletins will be taken ver the phne. Substitutins in individual/dual sprts must be made befre a player s first scheduled game/match. The riginal player cannt re-enter the turnament after the substitutin is cmpleted. Team Captains and players are respnsible fr checking the eligibility status. A cmplete list f intramural eligibility requirements is available in the General Rules and Regulatins fr Intramural Play, which can be btained in the Intramural Office r by visiting the intramural sprts website. EQUIPMENT Teams are allwed t prvide their wn jerseys, but these jerseys must be similar in clr and it is recmmended that they have legal numbers. (Ex. A number larger than 5 and n cmbined numbers can exceed 55). An ID will be cllected frm the TEAM CAPTAIN (if a captain is nt at that game, a team representative) t check ut a jerseys and will be returned when the jerseys are returned. Any jersey nt returned will be billed t the captain ** Each jersey csts apprximately $12.00. If a participant wears an intramural jersey, a T-shirt must be wrn under the reversible jersey. ** Participants must remve all jewelry prir t cmpeting. The Intramural Office will prvide a game ball fr each scheduled cntest. Warm-up balls may be checked ut with a valid ID frm the Dedman Desk. Any game ball can be used, prvided bth captains agree. 1

N hats r bandannas will be allwed. One-piece elastic headbands are the nly frms f headwear that will be allwed. Any thing that frms a knt will nt be allwed. Athletic shes and athletic attire are required fr participatin. Unacceptable attire includes jeans, jean shrts, khaki pants/shrts, buttn dwn shirts, hiking bts, and street shes. Any athletic brace with expsed metal must be cvered and/r taped. The Intramural Office will nt be respnsible fr prviding athletic tape. Tw fficials will be n the curt fficiating each game. An additinal screkeeper will keep the time, scre, and fuls f each team n the prvided scre sheet. In sme cases three fficials will be scheduled t fficiate each curt. If an fficial is nt available t keep the time, scre, and fuls then each team must prvide a screkeeper. One team representative will keep scre and time; the ther team representative will keep scre and fuls n the scre sheet. FORFEITS **GAME TIME IS FORFEIT TIME, THERE WILL BE NO GRACE PERIOD** If a team is scheduled t play at 7pm, they must be signed in, jerseys n and ready t BEGIN playing at 7pm r a frfeit will be declared. It is recmmended that teams arrive at least fifteen (15)-minutes prir t the start time t ensure they are ready t play n time. In rder t claim a frfeit, the ppsing team must have the minimum players present and ready t play at game time. If a team frfeits r cncedes tw (2) cntests during a sprt seasn they will be drpped frm further cmpetitin in that sprt. All teams scheduled t play that team will autmatically receive a victry and a fur (4) sprtsmanship rating unless anther team is inserted in its place. Members f a team that have frfeited ut are nt eligible t participate fr anther team. Exceptin: a team, which did nt shw up fr any cntests prir t frfeiting ut, nly by the permissin f the crdinatr f that sprt. A frfeit fee f $25.00 will be charged t the team captain fr all cntests in which his/her team frfeits during the seasn. The team captain must keep a credit card n file when registering his/her team. T avid a frfeit and the penalties assciated with a frfeit please cntact the ffice (Phne 768.3367, Email intramurals@smu.edu) by 3:00 p.m. n the day f yur scheduled cntest. In rder t default a weekend match (Saturday r Sunday) the ntificatin must be received by 5 p.m. Friday. This will be cnsidered a default which means yu will still be given a lss but a frfeit fee will nt be charged. PROTESTS The team captain must file all prtests with the IM sprts Supervisr/fficial at the time a questin ccurs. Only prtests that cncern rule interpretatins, plicy and prcedure, r player eligibility will be cnsidered. If a captain wrngfully prtests, the team prtesting will be charged a time-ut. If that team is ut f time-uts, the team prtesting will be given an unsprtsmanlike technical ful fr a delay f game. Rule interpretatin prtests: Prtests that challenge the accuracy f a judgment call by an fficial/supervisr will nt be accepted. Rule prtests must be filed at the time a questin ccurs and will be settled at that time by the Supervisr (befre the next live ball play). NO cntests r prtins theref will be replayed due t imprper rules enfrcement if nt prtested. If yu have a questin captains, please ASK it. All prtests that challenge rule interpretatin will be recrded by the IM Supervisr. Fr further questins abut prtests, please see the Intramural Sprts Plicies. Player eligibility prtests Eligibility prtests will be decided at the time the questin is raised whenever pssible. Players fund t be ineligible after the cntest will result in that cntest being frfeited and/r that player being suspended. PLAYERS A team will cnsist f five (5) players. A team may start (and play) with as few as fur (4) players. If a team drps belw the minimum f fur players due t injuries r fuls they will be allwed t cntinue. 2

Players arriving late must shw their ID and prvide their jersey number t the screkeeper befre entering the game. The late player must nt interrupt the screkeeper! Please, be curteus and wait fr a break in the actin s they can get the late player int the game. Current varsity basketball players are nt eligible t participate in intramural basketball. Individuals wh have earned a varsity letter in basketball frm any fur-year institutin are nt eligible t cmpete in intramural basketball fr ne calendar year frm their last seasn f play. Additinal infrmatin n eligibility may be fund n the intramural website within the General Rules and Regulatins fr Intramural Play r by visiting the intramural ffice. Substitutins Substitutins shall be made nly during dead ball situatins: time-uts, vilatins, and fuls. Substitutes must check in with the screkeeper prir t entering the game. Substitutes may enter the game nly when beckned nt the curt by the game fficials. Players may re-enter as many times as desired unless they have fuled-ut r have been remved by the fficials, an Intramural Supervisr, r member f the recreatinal sprts staff. N substitutes will be allwed fr a shter in free-thrw situatins, unless the player is injured r unable t cntinue; in this scenari the substitute will be the player designated t sht the free thrw. PLAY All games will be gverned by 2014-2015 NFHS Basketball Rules, except where special Intramural Rules apply. All players, captains, and caches are respnsible fr knwing the rules. Length f Game A game will cnsist f tw 20-minute halves (running clck). Clck will stp inside the last minute f each half. During regulatin play, the clck will nly stp fr time-uts and injuries. The clck will stp n every fficial s whistle in the last minute f each half. A three (3) minute halftime will separate the first and secnd halves. **Playffs** A tie scre after regulatin time will result in a tw (2) minute vertime perid. The clck stps during the last minute fr all whistles. Time-uts Teams are allwed tw (2) time-uts per half f 30 secnds in length. One (1) time-ut is allwed during each vertime perid (time-uts d nt carry ver). Time-uts d nt carry frm the first half int the secnd half. Mercy Rule If a team is ahead by twenty (20) r mre pints with tw (2) minutes r less remaining in the game the game will be called. At the end f the first half, if a team is ahead by frty (40) r mre pints the game will be called. Additinally if a team gains a frty (40) r mre pint advantage in the secnd half the game will be called. Pssessin A jump ball will be administered t start the game and every extra perid. Alternating pssessins will be awarded in all ther held ball situatins and t start the secnd half. Live Ball and Dead Ball The ball becmes live when: it leaves the referee s hand fr the jump ball it is at the dispsal f the thrwer fr a thrw-in it is at the dispsal f the free thrwer fr a free thrw The becmes dead r remains dead when: a gal is scred a held ball ccurs r a ball becmes ldged between the backbard and ring r cmes t a rest n the flange a player r team cntrl ful ccurs 3

The ball is ut f bunds when it is cntacted by a player, persn, the flr, r any bject that is utside a bundary. The ball is ut f bunds when it cntacts the supprts r back f the backbard, the ceiling, r the verhead equipment/supprts. Vilatins & Penalties Fr the fllwing vilatins, a thrw-in will be awarded t the ffended team ut f bunds at the lcatin f the vilatin: Thrw-in vilatins include leaving the designated thrw-in spt; handing the ball inbunds; carrying the ball nt the curt; thrwing the ball directly int the gal withut being tuched by anther player inbunds; the ppnent reaching thrugh the ut-f-bunds bundary; and taking mre than five secnds t release the ball. Travel: A player hlding the ball may nt mve a ft r feet in excess f the limits prescribed. Kick: A player may nt kick r strike the ball with any part f their leg r ft. Illegal Dribble: A player may nt dribble a secnd time after their first dribble has ended unless the player has lst cntrl due t a try fr gal, tuch by an ppnent, r pass r fumble that has been tuched by anther player. A player may nt palm r carry the ball during a dribble. Three Secnds: When the ball is in the frntcurt, an ffensive player may nly be in the lane fr three secnds. An exceptin may be made fr a player wh has been in the lane fr less than three secnds and dribbles r mves immediately t try fr a gal. 10 Secnds: The ffensive team has 10 secnds t mve the ball frm the backcurt t the frntcurt when pssessin is gained r regained in the backcurt. Backcurt: If the ball travels frm the frntcurt t the backcurt, the team in cntrl f the ball shall nt be the first team t tuch the ball in the backcurt. Clsely Guarded: When a player is legally guarded by a defensive player within six feet, that player shall nt hld the ball fr five secnds r dribble fr five secnds. Excessive Swinging f Elbws: A player may nt excessively swing their elbws. Free-Thrws The first marked lane spaces n each side f the lane, abve and adjacent t the neutral-zne marks (the blck), shall be ccupied by ppnents f the free thrwer. N teammate f free thrwer shall ccupy either f these marked spaces. The secnd marked spaces may be ccupied by teammates f the free thrwer The third marked spaces n each side, nearest the free thrwer, may be ccupied by the ppnents f the free thrwer. Free-thrw vilatins have different penalties dependent upn which team cmmitted the vilatin: If the thrwing team enters r leaves a marked lane space r the shter enters the lane prir t the ball cntacting the rim, the ball becmes dead and the next free-thrw is attempted r the ball is awarded t the ppsing team ut f bunds if there are n remaining free-thrw attempts. If the nn-thrwing team enters r leaves a marked lane space prir t the ball cntacting the rim, the free thrw shall be re-attempted if the thrw is unsuccessful. Fuls and Penalties Players are allwed five (5) persnal fuls befre fuling ut. Incidental cntact (cntact that des nt hinder an ffensive r defensive player frm nrmal mvement) is allwed; hwever, cntact in the fllwing frms by a players arm(s) r leg(s) is restricted: 4

Hlding Pushing Charging Hitting Blcking Tripping The penalty fr a cmmn ful is the ball awarded fr a thrw-in at the spt nearest the ful. Shting fuls will result in tw (2), r three (3) ful shts. If the field gal was made n a shting ful, the player is awarded ne (l) ful sht. All cmmn and persnal fuls will be cunted against a team ttal. On the seventh team ful f each half; a bnus (ne and ne ful shts) will be awarded fr the remainder f that half. On the tenth team ful f the half a duble bnus (tw fuls shts) will be awarded fr the remainder f the half. The bnus is nt in effect fr the ppnents n a team cntrl ful (ffensive player has pssessin f the ball when ful is cmmitted by ANYONE n the ffensive team). All player cntrl fuls will result in NO basket and lss f pssessin. All fuls d carry ver int vertime; this includes team, technical, and persnal. Intentinal Fuls An intentinal ful is ne which des nt appear t be a legitimate attempt t play the ball. This has been expanded t include a player causing excessive cntact (hard ful) while playing the ball. This is a judgement call by the fficial and cannt be prtested. Penalty: 2 pints and pssessin - NO free thrws will be awarded. Technical Fuls A nn-cntact ful, which invlves unsprtsmanlike behavir f any srt; but specifically includes prfanity, bscene gestures, and abusive r bscene language, will be cnsidered a technical ful. All Technical fuls given directly t a player will als result in an autmatic yellw card, as related t the IM sprtsmanship plicy. Tw technical fuls n ne player will result in that player s autmatic ejectin/red card. These fuls include unsprtsmanlike cnduct plus dunking/grasping the rim. THREE UNSPORTSMANLIKE TECHNICAL FOULS ON THE SAME TEAM WILL RESULT IN THE GAME BEING FORFEITED BY THAT TEAM. Penalty: 2 pints will be awarded, and pssessin at mid curt -- NO free thrws will be sht. Flagrant Fuls A persnal ful that invlves any f the fllwing: Vilent cntact with an ppnent (including striking with the elbw, kicking, kneeing, r mving under a player wh is in the air) in a manner that might cause severe injury t the ppnent. Extreme verbal, smetimes persistent, vulgar, abusive cnduct. This is a judgement call by the fficial and cannt be prtested. Penalty: 2 pints, pssessin at the spt nearest the spt f the ful, and autmatic ejectin/red card f ffending player- NO free thrws will be sht. PLAYER/CAPTAIN/ COACH CONDUCT If a player is ejected (Flagrant, Flagrant Technical, r Tw Technical Fuls) all f the fllwing sanctins will apply: He/she must leave the building immediately. He/she will be ineligible t participate in any intramural sprt until they meet with the crdinatr in charge f the sprt. Each team is allwed ne cach n the team bench area during play. If the cach des nt remain in the bench area it will result in a bench technical ful being assessed. Cach must be n rster. The team must designate a playing Captain wh is respnsible fr cmmunicating with the fficials. Only the Captain is allwed t address the fficials during play. The cach must nt address the fficials at anytime. 5

SPECTATORS Spectatrs will be allwed in the gym during games as lng as they are able t remain in the bleachers. Due t limited space, if a supervisr feels that the gym is getting t crwded, they will ask spectatrs t leave the sprts area and watch frm the utside f the gym. If a persn is a spectatr they must sit/stand in the bleachers. All caches must als be named n the rster but d nt need t sign in at the game site. Spectatr areas start at the end f the bench and extend all the way t the wall. At n time shuld players (warming up fr the next game) r fans be in areas nt designated by the supervisrs n duty. The supervisr has ultimate authrity n wh stays and wh leaves the gym area. Remember that having spectatrs in the gym is a privilege, s d nt take advantage f the system r the privilege will be taken away. All spectatrs must have a valid membership t enter the Dedman Center. If yu d nt have a valid membership spectatrs can purchase a day pass. PLAYOFFS At the cmpletin f the regular seasn a single eliminatin turnament will be played fr all teams that meet the qualificatins. T qualify, teams must nt frfeit r cncede twice during the regular seasn, and must have at least an average f 3.0 sprtsmanship rating. CO-REC MODIFICATIONS Players A team must maintain a female/male rati f 3:2. (Ex: 2 males:3 females). At n time may there be 3 males n the curt r mre than a ne player per gender advantage n the curt. If fur players are playing, the rati must be 2:2. (2 males, 2 females). If a player fuls ut r is injured, the crrect gender rati must be maintained by adding r eliminating players. Play A regulatin wmen s basketball will be used in all C-Rec. games. There are n lane restrictins fr men in C-Rec basketball. All players can enter the lane at any time. Wmen s baskets are wrth 3 and 4 instead f 2 and 3. (the nly exceptin is free-thrws where a single pint is given). If a wman is rewarded a shting ful inside the three-pint-arc she will sht 3 free-thrws. If a wman is rewarded a shting ful while attempting a three-pint field gal, she will sht 4 ful shts.
