Marking Time Newsletter for the Easton Area High School Instrumental Music Association October 2017 Mark Your Calendar! Next IMA meeting Tuesday, October 10 at 7:00 www.eahsmusic.com for more information Director s Message The school year is off and running and our music students are busy preparing for marching band contests, football games, Fall Orchestra Concert and so much more. We have had a smooth start to the new year thanks to continued support and dedication by many. This month we have accomplished Chamber String and Jazz Band Auditions, a very successful marching band moment at the Philadelphia Phillies game, our first marching band competition for the year and chair seating and preparation for the Fall Orchestra Concert. As we look toward the month of October we look forward to hosting our, First Flag Over The United Colonies Band Festival. This is always a great night of music and pageantry. Thank you to Mrs. Gifford and Mrs. Martellucci for their tireless dedication to the festival. I would also like to thank two of our alumni parents Mr. and Mrs. Reiss for once again taking care of the First Flag program. As always if you need to contact me for any reason, the best way is to e-mail me at luttec@eastonsd.org. Together we can accomplish the impossible please continue to be involved in our parent organization and experience the energy that surrounds the program. Ms. Carole A. Lutte Instrumental Director

First Flags The First Flag Over the United Colonies Band Festival will be held on Wednesday, October 4 (raindate Thursday, October 5) at our own Cottingham Stadium. Come out to hear Easton Area Middle School 7/8, Catasauqua High School, Wilson Area High School, Emmaus High School, Phillipsburg High School, Pocono Mountain East High School, and Easton Area High School bands as they perform their field shows. Tickets can be purchased at the door. The cost is $6 for adults, $5 for students and seniors, and under 5 free. There is an opportunity for even more fun if you participate in the basket raffle, 50/50, and Treasure Hunt! Payments for the Fiesta Bowl New Address!!! Just a reminder: Trip payments should either be put in the lock box at school or mailed to Debra Fasching please note the new address! Make checks payable to IMA. Also, it is extremely important to write your student's name in the memo line. We want to ensure that money is being applied to the correct student account. Debra Fasching 1206 Chidsey St. Easton, PA 18042

Get a Good Night s Sleep On Saturday, October 14 th, from 10 am to 5 pm, the Easton IMA will hold its first annual Mattress Sale Fundraiser. There will be 25 different mattress brands and styles to choose from each in four sizes (twin, full, queen, king). These brandnamed mattresses are not only being offered at a discounted price, but your instrumental student and the IMA will receive in total between $75- $150 in music money for each mattress sold. Each student brought home a packet of student coupons which you can put their name on and then pass out to interested friends and family members. This coupon is how your child will receive credit for the sale of the mattress. If you run out of coupons, just have your friend or family member mention your child as the one who referred them to the event. Plus, there is a bonus. If we sell 100 mattresses, the program will receive an extra $5000! With over 400 students in the instrumental program, we can achieve this! Contact Jim Mattison at kjmattison@gmail.com with any questions. Road Trip to Philadelphia On Tuesday, September 19, the EAMS marching band took a road trip to Philadelphia. The band was invited to participate in a pre-game parade with other bands in the area, and they won the opportunity to play the National Anthem prior to the game. Despite the rain, their performance was fantastic! The students had a super time participating in this great experience.

Competition Maloney Stadium in Phillipsburg was the site of our first competition of the season. At the Neil Boyer American Heritage Festival of Bands, an array of field shows were performed by Belvidere Area High School, Catasauqua High School, Easton Area High School, North Hunterdon High School, and Phillipsburg High School. Easton s field show El Diablo De Las Lomas earned the following ratings: Music: Excellent Marching: Excellent General Effect: Superior Overall Rating: Excellent Additionally, the band earned awards for Best Drum Major, Best Music, Best Marching, Best Percussion, Best Guard, and Best Overall Effect. Congratulations to the band, Ms. Lutte, and all who helped make this a successful evening!

Basket Raffle Donations Needed Basket raffles have proven to be a good source of revenue for the IMA, and we hope to be able to continue that tradition during the 2017-2018 school year. We will have several raffles during the fall including First Flag and the Craft Show. In order to make this fundraiser successful, we are in need of donations to make the baskets. All baskets are made to fit a theme. Some themes that are successful are: Chocolate - anything chocolate At home spa - nail care, facial care, aromatherapy, candles, bath pillows, body lotions, etc. Autumn - scarecrows, placemats, dish towels, napkins, candles, paper plates Party supplies - cups, napkins, tablecloths, soda, chips, snacks... Try to find items on clearance for any holiday (I can store items for baskets in the future) Feel free to be creative If you wish to make a complete basket of any theme, it would be greatly appreciated. You can make and cellophane wrap the whole thing or give me all of the items and I will wrap up the basket. Items can be brought to the next IMA meeting or you can contact Mary Beth Buza at gbuza@rcn.com or 610-253-1329 to arrange for drop-off/pickup. Thanks in advance for you generosity! Remember, all the monies raised support the instrumental music students.
