Normal Distribution and Bell Curve Z-Scores The z-score for a data value is the deviation from the mean divided by the standard deviation. Let x be a data value. z-score= x - x = x - x S.D. σ The z-score tells us how many deviations the data value is from the mean. If the z-score is positive, then it is above the mean. If the z-score is negative, then it is below the mean.

Each year, the College Board publishes the mean SAT and the standard deviation for students taking the tests. SAT scores are normally distributed. Assume for a group of students that the mean SAT score is 500 with a standard deviation of approximately 100 points. 1.
