First Deer Hunting Luck by Bill Mayer Stan Boots harvested this buck on his property in Baldwinsville on November 20th. The New York State Whitetail was 5-1/2 years old and weighed 220 pounds. Young hunter, Eoin Brady, harvested his first deer, a 5pt buck, on his family s property in Sharon Springs. Eoin received the traditional marking and helped with the field dressing of his trophy. Cold Morning Hunt by George Gollin On a cold November morning, I took my little hunting buddy, Alex out for a day of deer hunting on his grandparents property. After sitting for two and a half hours and seeing nothing, we decided to take a walk and change our scenery. I sat Alex in a favorite spot of mine and then slowly walked a large circle around him. Alex s shot rang out about three quarters of the way through my big circle and Alex s shot was perfect. This was Alex s second deer, but his first gut, drag and butcher job. His enthusiasm for the whole process makes hunting with Alex fun and rewarding. Alex is one of the youth applying for our Young Hunter of the Year award. Newfoundland Moose Hunt by Herb Roes At the end of the first week of October 2013, two of my hunting friends and I planned a moose hunting trip in Newfoundland. This was a trip that started when I purchased the offering by Dave Evans, Victoria Outfitters during the auction at our April ACSCI fundraiser. We decided to drive, and in a two axle trailer, take a couple of freezers along with a generator for moose, which are not small animals. On the second night, we were at Port Sydney, Nova Scotia, boarding the 9:45pm boat to Newfoundland. It is a large vessel because all items need to be transported and most are hauled by tractor trailer. The overnight trip is approximately 7 hours and sleeping rooms with bunks are available. We arrived in the AM at Port aux Basque, then drove 200 more miles to meet Dave Evans. We parked our vehicle and continued the trip in his van. He had picked up another hunter at Gander International Airport, since you can choose to fly. We then drove an additional 1 and 1/2 hours to reach camp. Having made a mental decision of what would I do if I saw an animal on the first day, I had no qualms about shooting my bull moose 15 minutes into the first hunting day (I had some reading material with me). I had the opportunity to accompany each of my hunting buddies on their hunt and hoped to see a bear, which are also hunted with bait. On the last day, my friend shot a large cow. Both of our animals were transported to a competent butcher, cut up, wrapped and frozen. The meat was picked up and darn near filled our freezers. The meat was kept frozen solid as we ran the generator while traveling back home. The round trip mileage from Albany was 2750 miles. The roads were good to excellent, particularly in Canada. We made a stop at LL Bean -- WOW, it has changed in 50 years, the last time and first visit to the store. I am looking forward to dining on moose for some time and have already enjoyed it in a number of different ways. The other buddy on the hunt had the wrong license and could have shot a calf, which he chose not to do. He was looking for the BIG MOOSE...next time, maybe.. Newfoundland Labrador Guides and Outfitters Association Convention By Larry Steiner On December 5 & 6, I traveled to Corner Brook Newfoundland to attend the Newfoundland Labrador Guides and Outfitters Association Convention as a liaison for Safari Club International. This is my third year working for the Guides and Outfitters Committee which is part of the Convention Committee and the second year going to Newfoundland to visit NLGOA. Members of the Guides and Outfitters committee have several duties, such as picking the professional outfitter of the year both for North America and the rest of the world, reviewing the proposed hunt donations for the national convention and traveling to the various state and country guide and outfitters associations representing SCI. While I was there I spent some time talking with Dave and Eileen Evans from Victoria Outfitters, who are supporters of Adirondack Catskill Chapter Fundraiser. Herb Roes and friends hunted with this outfitter in October. Photo of Dave and Eileen Evans of Victoria Outfitters with Larry Steiner, ACSCI President Big Buck Contest At the Dec 19th meeting in Cold Brook, Jack Grower and Jeff Hazard brought their deer trophies for SCI scoring. Contest winner gets a shoulder mount of the deer completed by one of the taxidermists who are ACSCI members. Jack s 10pt buck scored 127 4/8 and was taken in the town of Ohio. Jeff s 8pt buck scored 101 2/8. Jeff took his buck in Gravesville. Congratulations Jack! Page 4 Adirondack-Catskill Chapter SCI News January/February 2014
