Danish Irish Setter 2016 In many ways 2016 has been a great year for the Danish Irish Setter Club. We had our 100 Years anniversary and the Irish setter was doing great and as such I will take a historic perspective as well, in this year s update. The Irish setter in Denmark has more or less completely changed the last 40 Years. I stumbled over an article in our 60 Years anniversary book (1976). A Famous Danish IS Handler and breeder Erik Johnstadt Moller (1894-1982) wrote:. The Irish setter is not a dog for anyone, It s late develop, normally not born with natural Point instinct, has a very stubborn and strong character and by that often difficult to handle Imagine this is written by a man that dedicated half his life to the Irish Setter since 1920. The other part was dedicated to his carrier in the Army and he is one of the highest decorated officers in Denmark. I truly wanted Erik Jonstadt Moller to experience the Irish Setter in 2016 to see what a magnificent dog it has turned in to. To Illustrate the progress the last 30-40 years In Denmark Open Class: The red line is excellent and the Yellow is Very Good and Good combined. The blue line is Prize percentage ( e.g 20% is one price in every 5 starts ). It s clear that the improvement number of prices is increased by a factor 3 in the last part of the century without compromising the Prize percentage.
For the serious handlers in Denmark the Open Class Couple if just a pit stop before entering the Winner Class. You need one excellent in Open Class Couple to join the Winner class. To compare the Danish Trial system with the Irish you can say that In Ireland you have Open Class and Winnerclass combined in one trial, where in Denmark we have two different classes. The Open stake in Denmark is purely a class where the Quality of the dog is measured and as such you can have many dog with excellent in one trial with no winner - just excellent very good and Good. The Danish Winnerclass is a pure competition class and as such (even though it s rare) you can have a 1 st winner that only could achieve a Very Good in Open Class Couple. The progress in Winnerclass is shown below. We have already CACIT awards in the Winnerclass, but we have no CACT Awards. A group of People has suggested to Implement CACT award as well in Winnerclass. A big step forward as it will be easier for people in other countries to compare the results let s see how that suggestion is received. As we have 2 confined IS Winnerclass trials in Denmark (with 1 st to 6 th winner). The most important is the Green line that shows the number of placement in open Winnerclasses for all the English dogs. It s clear that we have seen a 50-60% increase in Winnerclass placements. 2016 was a brilliant year with 7 1 st winner. Of them 5 1 st winner in Winner class trials open for all English dogs and Breton. To give you a perspective, we have around 15 of these Winnerclasses per year so 5 is absolute outstanding as only 15% of the starting dogs are IS. The Irish Setter Community in Denmark can be proud of this progress and seeing the current level of young dogs it s hard to be pessimistic for the future. The progress is made by visionary breeders that have taken in new bloodlines in Denmark so even though, we only breed 50 puppy a year we have great diversity in our
Gene pool. When that said; 50 is not enough and we have a strong believe, that it will be more in the future driven by a new and more proactive Board and the increasingly high level of our dogs. Being a truly dedicated Irish Setter man, it s difficult not feel joy and happiness in every bone of my body Top performers 2016 2016 Was the 100 Years Anniversary of the Danish Irish Setter Club.
