Standard Operating Procedure for Solvent use in EMAL Solvents used in EMAL. Acetone Ethanol Methanol 2-Propanol Lacomit Solvent (contains Xylene) Location(s): Small amounts of solvents are used in all rooms of the North Campus EMAL. Larger quantities are stored and used in room 423. Specified Hazards: DANGER! Extremely flammable liquid and vapor. Vapor from Acetone may cause flash fire. Harmful if swallowed or inhaled. 1. Purchasing and Bringing Acids to EMAL: If you bring solvents other than those listed above to EMAL you should check that we have on-line access to the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for that particular solvent. All EMAL users must have received standard OSEH training and
received a Lab Safety Training Certificate or a letter signed by an OSEH representative. Users should familiarize themselves with the MSDS information before working with any solvent. Quantities of any solvent should will be limited to the smallest amount necessary to complete the sample preparation, experiment or series of experiments. 2. Storage: Four liter bottles should be stored in the Solvents Cabinet in the Chemical Preparation Room 423 EMAL. Do NOT mix or store next to incompatible chemicals. Total volume of flammable solvents in the CHESS Chemical Room should be less than forty liters. Small (500 ml) wash bottles are be used and stored throughout EMAL for cleaning operations. 3. Authorized Personnel: Use will be limited to the following personnel (when properly trained): EMAL Technical Staff EMAL Users 4. Training Requirements: EMAL staff and user training should include the following: Completion of OSEH Laboratory Safety Course Review of current MSDS Review of and use of safety equipment/protective clothing provided by the department Review of the departmental safety procedures Review of the EMAL Chemical Hygiene Plan 5. Use Location: Small (500 ml) wash bottles may be used and stored throughout EMAL for cleaning operations. All other uses should be performed in the EMAL Chemical Preparation Room. If large amounts of
vapor are expected then the hood should be used. All uses should be away from flames or ignition sources. 6. Personal Protective Equipment: All personnel are required to wear the following personal protective equipment whenever handling this material: Safety glasses or goggles, vinyl, Neoprene Gloves or Nitrile gloves, Lab Coat or apron, and Closed Shoes (absolutely no sandals, open toed or open healed shoes). Good ventilation is required. 7. Waste Disposal: The authorized person using this material is responsible for the safe collection, preparation and proper disposal of waste unless otherwise stated below. Waste shall be disposed of as soon as possible and in accordance with all laboratory and University procedures. Specific instructions: Waste solvent bottles are available in the EMAL Chemical Preparation room (Room 423). Be sure to check the compatibility of your waste solvent with those already in the waste container. For example cholorform and acetone are not compatible 8. Decontamination: Specific instructions: Ventilate area. Acetone will evaporate quickly from most surfaces and items. Other solvents may be wiped from surfaces and contaminated rags and cloths placed in the contaminated refuse bucket in EMAL 423. 9. Exposures: First Aid Measures and Emergency procedures to be followed: Skin Contact Immediately flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Get immediate medical attention. Wash clothing before reuse. Thoroughly clean shoes before
reuse. Eye Contact Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, lifting lower and upper eyelids occasionally. Get immediate medical attention. Inhalation Remove to fresh air. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get immediate medical attention. Ingestion Induce vomiting immediately as directed by medical personnel. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical attention immediately. 10. Spills: Use personal protective equipment as described above. Evacuate area. Shut off all sources of ignition. For small spills, wear nitrile gloves and goggles. For small spills, use paper towel or other wipes to absorb alcohol, for larger spills, use the solvent spill kit in the cabinet in Room 426. Bag all spill materials in plastic bag/s and label with a a hazardous waste label for pickup. Ventilate area and wash spill site with detergent and water. Notify EMAL staff and/or OSEH of spill and to receive any special instructions regarding spill. 11. 12. Other: a. Acetone vapor may cause flash fire. Extinguish all flames prior to use. Harmful if swallowed or inhaled. Causes irritation to skin, eyes, and respiratory tract. Can affect central nervous system. b. Methanol is not potable, it causes blindness if ingested. If sufficient is ingested then the effect may be permanent. c. Ethanol is not pure enough to drink, it is poisonous in high volumes and also contains trace levels of a number of carcinogens.
