BICYCLE RELATED INFO. BRENTWOOD Dave Stoeffler Dave Prado and myself belong to the Brentwood Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Committee and we had a meeting recently that provided some information that should be of interest to cyclists. Although this is not a bicycle project it is reported that the construction of the bridge over highway 4 at Balfour will start on Feb. 6th, depending on the weather. Might be a good place to stay away from. There was an accident on Walnut involving a cyclist in December when the cyclist was injured. The police report indicates that the cyclist was riding on the sidewalk and crossed the street without stopping as a car was turning. The cyclist was also not wearing a helmet. Doesn t sound like our kind of cyclist. There has been continuing discussion about the failure of the Hwy. 4 Bypass Authority to build a bicycle/pedestrian bridge across Hwy. 4 where the Mokelumne Trail would cross the highway. 12 years ago the Bypass Authority promised, in writing, that they would complete the bridge within one year of Brentwood completing the trail to the bypass. Brentwood quickly completed the trail, but, still no bridge and there is still no safe way for cyclists to get from Brentwood proper to Antioch or the small section of Brentwood on the west side of the highway. The trail is parallel to Grant Street on the east side and behind the shopping center that contains Home Depot on the west. There is also the distinct possibility that a large commercial water park may be built in the area on the west side of the highway. I believe that cyclists, pedestrians and the city would benefit from this bridge. There was a discussion about repairs to the bike lane on Sand Creek Rd. at the small bridge next to King Park. There was a dangerous drop off that was repaired unsatisfactory. Final repairs will be made when the weather warms up and paving can be completed. There was also some discussion about a grant application for several rapid flashing light systems at several crosswalks, some being near schools. 21st Annual Holiday Lights Ride - Dec 22nd
