Golf Course Update This has been a great month for the golf course here at Rio Bravo. First off, the weather has been unseasonably warm, which has made for an enjoyable golfing experience. The Bermuda grass is still in its dormancy phase, but the poa and volunteer rye has the course looking green. Secondly, ownership has approved the replacement of the old Solar Wind irrigation system with newer updated Rain Bird controllers. This will go a long way in our ability to control the irrigation system. Also 200 new rotors were purchased for the replacement of broken and faulty heads. These items will help improve course conditions in the future. We are hoping to have these controllers installed by the end of March. I ve also been hearing comments on how hard the Tees and Fairways have been this year. As you know, we have clay soils here at Rio Bravo, which can lead to compaction issues. One way to relieve that is through proper aerification on a regular basis. My plan is to be very aggressive over the next few years with aerifying the fairways and tees to promote a better Bermuda grass base. Allowing the soils to breathe and water to get in the root zone will be beneficial to the Bermuda grass health. Lastly, I had some comments on bunker rake placement. The rakes were being placed too close to the edge of the bunker where a ball might get hung up on the side of the bunker and lead to a difficult shot, instead of rolling to the flat part for an easier shot.
I have instructed staff to place the rakes further in the bunkers as shown in this picture. This is what membership has determined to be the proper placement of rakes. Your cooperation to replace rakes when finished hitting out of the bunkers will be appreciated. Thank you, Andy Heinze
