WEEKLY COMPANY DRILL LOST SCBA This is a great drill for knowing how familiar you are with your SCBA and its components. It will help you to enhance your readiness to trouble shoot your SCBA in a crisis situation or that of a fellow firefighter's. This is more of an individual drill in regards to skill, but it is one you can do anywhere and pretty much anytime. Keep in mind that this is not a RIT or Mayday drill. Instructions Any room or space will work where you can hide an SCBA. Tangle the straps, unsnap parts, and make it un-normal without altering its functionality. Don't make it too difficult. Activate the PASS alarm. Send in a firefighter with a blacked out condition. Make him find the SCBA by the sound of the PASS alarm, make it functional, put it on and egress the area. The firefighter should be on air as he egresses.
Special Considerations Go over the parts and functionality of the SCBA prior to the drill Use with structural firefighting gloves Black out masks Practice tool selection and carrying for all staffing levels Mask is used on the way in with no air and the firefighter must be on air and the SCBA secured on the way out Create a little competition by timing each member (keep it friendly) Communication is key Get the permission of the property owner Don't damage any property Jason Hoevelmann is a career Captain and Training officer with the Florissant Valley Fire Protection District and a part-time Combination Deputy Chief with Sullivan Fire Protection District.
