The hook can only be opened when there is no load on the fall. The hook is normally used together with the painter release hook on the bow of the boat as described in below operation procedure. For installations onboard oilplatforms, the use of painter hook is not possible, and the operation description for painter hook should be ignored for these installations The K4-D hook is avalilable with three different foundations as shown on illustration on page 4. 4

2 Method of checking proper re-setting of release hook. Safe use and operation of rescue-boats during drills, inspection and maintenance is dependent on knowing that the release gear is properly reset. Ensuring release hook re-setting. The first thing to check whenever entering the Rescue-boat when it is (or will be) suspended by the falls, is properly reset as follows: No Operation guide Schematic diagram/picture 1 Before entering the Rescue-boat, observe from the ship s deck that masterlink is secured behind the mousing unit, and hook is in a closed and locked position. Master link Mousing unit 2 Check that the safety pin on the hook is in a correct secured position. Safety pin Never enter the Rescue boat if the safety pin is out of secured position. If the safety pin is out of secured position, the rescue boat shall be suspended to the davit by slings around the hull during investigation and repair of the irregular situation. 3 Release gear operation 3.1.1 Off-load release operation procedure. The only method of releasing the Rescue-boat safely, is when it is fully waterborne. 5

Confirm the following before the operation: Painter-line is connected to the Rescue-boat and the vessel, If applicable/provided. Rescue-boat is fully waterborne. The engine running. All crew are seated. No Operation guide Schematic diagram/picture 1 Ensure that painterline is used in correct and safe way, if applicable/provided. Safety pin Designated crew member removes safety pin from Release-hook, stands clear and informs helmsman that release mechanism is active. 3 Helmsman pulls the release control wire until Master link is clear of the hook. The Rescue-boat is now pulled by the painterline, if applicable/provided. Release control wire Do not touch the release pedal or handle before the rescue boat is water born. When lowering the boat, a sudden stop may cause the wire to behave elastic, which can result in a slack wire. Stepping on the pedal can then release the hook and the boat will fall freely. This may result in injury or death to the crew. 6

4 Recovery operation 4.1 Resetting procedure of release hook No Operation guide Schematic diagram/picture 1 Rotate the hook back in closed position and insert the hook safety pin. Check that the hook is locked by the safety pin. 4.2 Recovery procedure of rescue boat The recovery procedure is to be in accordance with the following steps, only after completing the release gear resetting. No Operation guide Schematic diagram/picture 1 Manouver the Rescue-boat towards the loose painterline hanging from the vessel and connect it to the painter hook, if applicable/equiped. 7

2 Let the Rescueboat drift slowly until the painterline is tighten. The Rescueboat should now be located directly below the davit or lifting crane. If the ship is making headway, and the painter is not fastened to the painter release hook before lifting the rescue boat out of the water, this may result in death or serious injuries. 4.3 Connection of the suspension link No Operation guide 1 Designated crew member connects the Masterlink to release hook. Schematic diagram/picture Master-link 2 Hoist the Rescue-boat just clear of water, confirm that release-hook is propely connected and secured before the rescue-boat is hoisted to deck level. 8

5 Inspection and maintenance 5.1 General precautions SOLAS regulation III/20 requires that all life-saving appliances shall be in working order and ready for immediate use before the ship leaves port and at all times during the voyage. Lifeboats, launching appliances and release gear are required by SOLAS regulation III/20 to be inspected weekly and monthly according to the instructions for on-board maintenance complying with the requirements of SOLAS regulation III/36. Also, MSC.1/Circ.1206 describes more detailed procedures for periodic servicing and maintenance of lifeboats, launching appliances and release gear. This manual includes only the weekly and monthly inspection and maintenance, which are conducted on board under the direct supervision of a senior ship s officer. 5.2 Precautions by inspection and maintenance Before inspection and maintenance, the boat shall be suspended by hang-off wire connected to the maintenance lug. 5.3 Inspection and maintenance of release gear system Items Method Inspection Procedure Release hook Visual Check resetting condition.
