July, 2018 Thunder River Renegades, Inc Vol. VI, No 7 The Premiere Cowboy Action Shooting Club in Grimes County, Texas 9/10 of a mile north of the Texas Renaissance Festival Main Entrance look for the Red, White and Blue sign Match this Saturday: May 23 rd : full match of six stages; registration cut off 9:00 Happy Trails Match: Saturday May 30 th Matches report: May 26: Summer dress arrived about the same time as Summer and everyone was very happy the stages had fans. While we shot 6 stages we will be returning to 5 stage matches for the rest of summer. Mississippi Red and lesser half Good Troy as well as Odessa were on hand to show everyone you can still shoot in full cowboy dress. Neshannock Leo, Texas Crazy Clay and Frio Kid have returned to the fold glad to see them again. Crockett brought his daughter Rogue Red who is going to start shooting with us soon. Crockett introduced her to brass picking her first time out what a fun way to start! Rusty Elder, Sundown and Silvertip Kid were on hand to add their smoke and powder to the event, you could hear their targets ring from one end to the other. June 2: Father/son duo of Fast Tracker* and Austin Slim had a running contest to see who was fastest. Slim just beat out dear old Dad by that much, to take home family honors. Returning member Marshal Raylan, and Rio Brazos Kid are back shooting up a storm. Little Britches and husband Dusty Bottoms were on hand as was Undefined who shot Lady Wrangler. Texas State Wild Bunch Champion Shadow Doc (Doc Barium) was demonstrating just how fast a 1911 can be shot. Others seen wandering around at times were Baba Looey, Hopalong Ace, Emery Goodner and Cap N Ball. Cherokee Jones was his normal happy self even if one of his revolvers went south while Dealin Lead s rifle decided to lock up tighter than a drum. *Fast Tracker underwent some major oral surgery on June 12; we wish him well as he goes through the healing process. Clean Matches, No Penalties May 26: Doc Jim Harvey, GW Ketchum, Neshannock Leo, Nile City Slick, Rawhide, Sundown, Texas Rooster, cheyenne June 2: Col Mackenzie, Doc Jim Harvey, Doc Skurlock, Nile City Slick, Osage Mike, Red River Larry, Sundown, Texas Rooster, cheyenne 24% clean: both matches combined 1

Along with Lorelei providing the Laz Tree to the club we also send out thanks to several other members. Lonesome Lefty was the driving force and benefactor behind the ceramic tile plaque and Red River Mac welded the metal stand. Thanks to these fine TRR members for honoring one of the founding members of our club: Lazarus Longshot. A Big Welcome Howdy to our new members: This month we welcome Pappy Ray McGee and his son JJ McGee. They came out to watch and were so impressed with cowboy shooting they signed up on the spot. When you see them at the range give them a good old TRR Howdy, and welcome them into the posse. And then there were Five! TRR has honored a number of its members over the years for going well past above and beyond in helping the club. From building stage buildings, the pavilion and other structures to working behind the scenes to see that everything is ready for each and every match and maintaining paperwork (oh, the amount of paperwork that we generate) these cowfolk have always been there ready and willing to help. Number 1 Life Member is Texas Jack Daniels (known for his sunny disposition). At one match he was looking for some chain for a shotgun KD and got his life member badge instead. Number 2 is Ellie Mae. She was for years the driving force behind the lunches that followed the matches. She can be seen setting up stages at the beginning of matches, getting all the forms set out, being at work day and work day and all this with a smile on her face (doubly hard when you consider who she s married to) Third on the List is our very own Rawhide who was at the range pretty much every weekend working on construction projects, repairs to the construction projects and keeping everything as it should be. He was instrumental in building the indoor plumbing we have at the range and was given the honor of having it named after him: The Buzzards Roost. 2

Fourth is Two Spurs who was sort of the prequel to Rawhide. He built many of the original buildings and could pound a nail in a board without bending it. He supplied many of the ideas for the specific stages and at one time the Saloon was named Two Spurs Saloon Now we come to our newest Life Member: Rooster. He was president during some interesting times; he continues to mentor new folks and, probably most importantly to all, it the guy that comes out week after week and paints the targets. I ve seen him in hip boots disappearing under the muck still putting the final touches on one last target. For this honor he received the all gold Life Member Badge, his name on the Life Member Plaque and an additional 4 gallons of paint and a new brush. We ve hit on just a few of the reasons why these folks are due the honor of Life Member. Be sure to thank them for all they did and do to keep TRR the Best SASS Club in Grimes County, Texas! Long Range NOTES FROM OLE SMOKEY soon! Well, seems I was a little optimistic about holding the first 500 yard match this month. FairCone and Slipshod decided the dirt needed to settle and compact a little more before it was stable enough to shoot from. Then the recent rain washed off part of it. Oh well, Murphy is alive and well but we ll get it operating I ran into Crash this week, and he is the proud owner of a new (old i.e., original) Remington Rolling Block rifle in 40-65 well set up for our long range work. A nice, heavy barrel with C Sharps Soule sights. He s determined to put pressure on GW. The OBS is in the sights of lots of folks now! Happy Trails Match The First Annual Happy Trails Match is rapidly approaching. Not only does it honor our deceased pardners, it raises money for support of the 2 nd Amendment which is under some of the most vicious attacks I ve seen in over 40 years of watching the Fake News. Our president may have coined this specific term, but I ve been watching the lying SOB s get progressively more biased (and further divorced from reality) for 30+ years. These folks show daily that they will never let truth get in the way of a lie that suits their goals. At any rate, this match is our way of trying to support the truth and we sure hope you can come join us. Remember, neither TRR nor Ricky keep any of the funds beyond the cost of the lunch we serve. All of it goes to the Friends of the NRA for local Texas projects. Summer is Here Yep, summer is definitely here in the southern part of the Republic of Texas. And am I happy I finally decided to put in a sprinkler system in my yard. No more dragging around 150 feet of hose and manual sprinklers! 3

At any rate, y all be sure to dress so that you are comfortable in these temperatures. We don t care what you wear, just so there are no ball caps. We ll keep the generators gassed up and the fans going. We ll shoot only stages with shade and have plenty of water and Gator Aid (or suitable generic equivalent! ). I ve missed the last two shoots due to completing construction and moving my Mom into her new apartment. I m ready to shoot something and make smoke! Happy Trails Match: several bits of info about this match: Willow Hole Cowboys and TRR will be saluting their departed members. We are honoring Lazarus Longshot, Marcus Hooker and Red Dawg. There will be a remembrance and honor guard at the beginning of the match. Cherokee Jones is in charge. While you can sign up the day of the match, you are better assured of being on the same posse with your friends if you send in your application and if you have friends. All the funds will go to supporting the 2 nd Amendment less the cost of the lunch food which will be cooked by volunteer help (mainly the officers and their girlfriends and wives [may they never meet]) Gatorade and such will be available and we want everyone to stay hydrated Up-to-date list of those already signed up is included with this email as is the ever present HT application form (which can be filled out on a computer thanks to PBJ Long Range Scores are and will be posted on the TRR Forum. Nile City Slick will be posting all the scores from the long range events in this subsection. You don t have to have joined in order to see them. The matches are held twice monthly; the Sunday after the first Saturday Cowboy match and on Practice Day which is the third Saturday of each month. The types of matches vary so it s always a good idea to check ahead of the match date. We will shoot the gong match on Sunday July 8th. All welcome to bring a rifle caliber shooting iron and lots [50+] rounds of ammo. Single shot: shoot 5 rounds at 100, 150, 200, 250, & 350. Lever guns :100, 150, 200, 150, & 100. Scores from the last matches: https://thunderriverrenegades.com/community/long-range/ 4

120 ounces = taking Violet to lunch: normally I m pretty worn out after one of our summer matches, sleep all afternoon and early bed time (remember I m old). This month was different and in a good way. TJD brought over 30,000 gallons on Gatorade in 20 oz. containers. Before and during the match I consumed 6 of these bottles, about one a stage. Sweat like a hog but sweating is good it s when you stop sweating real trouble starts, heat stroke which can kill a person. Even though the temperature got into the mid 90 s I felt OK on the way home and was even able to take my child bride out for lunch. All in all staying very hydrated is a very good thing so be sure to take advantage of the liquids the club provides during the hot months of the year. As Manassas Jack says, If you wait till you re thirsty you re already behind the curve. We DO need some Stinkin Badges: with new members flooding the club we want to revisit how to buy a club badge. Red River Mac is handling this for TRR; see his message below: Make your check out to me, L. M. DeBose, for $69. You can send it to me at 11535 Clover Lane Ct., Houston, 77066 or wait until you see me at the Range. I will also need the correct spelling of your cowboy alias, and your mailing address. Red River Mac The Thunder River Mercantile J M Leather: is a small leather shop where leather items are crafted one at a time to provide long service to the cowboy shooter. Johnny and his wife Montana Hannah are cowboy shooters as well and understand getting what you paid for and being treated fair. The promise is a simple one, if you are not happy with your gear, let us make it right. We want you to be proud of the gear you wear, and proud that you got it from us. We are not a big name maker, but we will put our reputation and gear up against anyone. Johnny Morris, jmorris69007@msn.com website: http://www.jmleather.com 5
