Lynchburg picked up two early runs in the second inning after Gavin Collins hit an RBI groundout and Jodd Carter laid down an RBI bunt single. Ahead 2-1 in the eighth inning, the Hillcats picked up a huge insurance run in the ninth inning when Collins ripped an RBI double down the first base line. It proved to be the winning run after the Khalil Lee hit a solo home run in the ninth for the Blue Rocks, but Henry Martinez retired the next three hitters in order to solidify the win. LAYING IT DOWN: Through nine games this season, Jodd Carter leads the Hillcats with three bunt hits. Carter has seven hits this season, and has two bunt hits over his last three starts. TERRIFIC TANNER: On Friday night, Hillcats starter Tanner Tully pitched one of the best games of the season so far for Lynchburg. The left-hander hurled seven strong innings, allowing just one unearned run on four hits. He struck out seven and did not issue a walk. Tully threw just 77 pitches, including 53 for strikes. Hillcats pitchers needed just 103 pitches to beat the Blue Rocks on Friday in a 2 hour, 11 minute contest. K-KING KRAUTH: Through four appearances this season spanning 6.1 IP, Ben Krauth has racked up 13 strikeouts. He has recorded a punch out in every game he s pitched and has struck out four in a game twice. The former Kansas Jayhawk ranks second in the Carolina League in strikeouts among relief pitchers. During his career, Krauth averages better than a strikeout per game, including a career-high 92 in 78.2 IP in 2017. Opponents have hit just.193 against him since he started pitching professionally in 2016. 2017 IN REVIEW: The Hillcats enjoyed a dominant 2017 campaign en route to a league championship. Lynchburg racked up a league best 87 wins overall, capturing the Northern Division title in both the first and second half of the season. They defeated the Frederick Keys, 2-1, in the Divisional Series. Lynchburg excelled on both sides of the ball throughout the entire season in the midst of their championship run. The Hillcats pitching staff finished with the league s best team ERA (3.21) and walked the fewest batters (365). On the offensive side, Lynchburg tallied the third-best team batting average in the Carolina League (.258), finished with the second-most RBIs (577), runs (645), doubles (262) and slugging (.395). EIGHT IS GREAT: Lynchburg captured its 8th Carolina League Championship last season, and first since 2012. The Hillcats have the second most titles of any Carolina League franchise, trailing only Winston-Salem with 11. TOP-30 IN LYNCHBURG: Conner Capel (No. 12), Sam Hentges (No. 17), Logan Ice (No. 21), and Mitch Longo (No. 27) are all Hillcats players that are ranked by the Indians on their Top-30 prospect list. Capel, an outfielder, batted.246 with 22 HR and 61 RBI in 119 games for the Single-A Lake County Captains last season. He was drafted by the Tribe in the 5th round of the 2016 MLB Draft. Hentges, a left-hander, missed the majority of last season while he was rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. He appeared in 11 total games (all starts) and went 0-4 with a 3.23 ERA between the AZL Indians and short-season Mahoning Valley. Hentges struck out 41 in 30.2 IP, and was drafted by the Indians in the 4th round of the 2014 MLB Draft. Ice, a catcher, spent last season with Lake County and hit.228 with 11 HR and 42 RBI in 93 games. He was selected by Cleveland with the 72nd overall pick in the 2016 MLB Draft. Longo, an outfielder, battled injuries last season and appeared in just 60 games. While he was healthy, he hit a combined.376 with 4 HR and 28 RBI between Lake County and Lynchburg. POWER SURGE COMING?: For a team that finished in the middle of the pack in home runs in 2017, the Hillcats could be getting a power boost in 18. Conner Capel, 20, blasted 22 long balls for Lake County last season (third-most in the Midwest League), and Emmanuel Tapia, a 22-year-old first baseman, led the Captains with 29 homers, which led the league. So far, the Hillcats have not hit a home run in 2018.
