The Beavers advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the third time in school history. Jason Spain is entering his eighth season at the helm of Minot State and holds a 844213 record. Beaver Bits Minot State was selected fourth in the 2017 NSIC Preseason Poll. The Beavers welcome eight new players into the fold in 2017. MSU returns 19 letterwinners, including six starters from last season. Minot State opened the 2017 season with a 60 win at Black Hills State on Thursday night. Freshmen Jordyn Cook and Sofia Lewis scored two goals each in their first collegiate game. Junior Haley Berryman and freshman Morgan Myers also scored a goal in their debut at Minot State. Junior Sydnee Canales leads the Beavers with two assists. The Beavers will be seeking their fourth NCAA Division II Tournament bid in their first six years in Division II. Jason Spain is in his eighth season as head coach. Scouting University of Mary UMary opens the 2017 season after post a 4103 overall record and 492 mark in the NSIC in 2016. Sophomore Kylee Welch and junior Caylin Cathey are the leading returners for the Marauders after scoring five points last season. Cathey recorded two goals and an assist while Welch scored one goal and three assists. Senior goalkeeper Hannah Smith held a 152 record with a 2.43 goalsagainst average and a 0.585 save percentage last season. Head coach Sarah Cook is in her sixth season leading the UMary program. The Marauders return to action on Friday, Sept. 8 vs. Colorado Christian in Billings, Mont. Series History Minot State leads the alltime series, 323, after winning last season s match 61 in Minot, N.D.

Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Preseason Poll Minot State was picked to finish fourth in the 2017 NSIC Preseason Poll, and senior Kelli Creese was named NSIC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year., the league announced in August. Minnesota State was selected as the favorite to win the league title with 217 points and 11 firstplace votes. The Mavericks enter the season after winning the NSIC Tournament last season. Spain led the Beavers to another milestone in 2016, as MSU captured the 2016 NSIC Championship while going 140 1 to earn the school s firstever NSIC regular season title. Spain has guided the program to three Division II NCAA Tournament appearances, including two straight appearances in the NCAA Central Region. In 2015, Spain led the Beavers to a school record 16 wins, including a 1221 record in the NSIC to finish third in the conference on their way to earning an NCAA Tournament berth. Defeating Winona State in the first round of the tournament resulted in the first tournament victory in school history. Spain coached MSU to a 1072 record in 2014 to finish fifth in the NSIC. The Beavers were at the top of the conference for defense, allowing only 17 goals on the season and a stellar 0.89 goalsagainst average. in 2013, Spain guided the Beavers to an eighth place finish in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference after coming off their most successful season in program history, compiling a 1543 recrd in 2012, including an NCAA Division II Tournament appearance. Minot State soccer became the first team in the university s short NCAA Division II tenure to earn a trip to the NCAA Division II Tournament where the Beavers traveled to Warrensburg, Mo., as the Central Region s No. 6 seed. The Beavers lost to Southwestern Oklahoma State in its first appearance in the tournament. Over his first three seasons, Spain put Minot State soccer on the map, earning an NAIA Regional Tournament berth in the program s first season and finishing with two winning seasons to begin his time at Minot State. The Beavers were 973 overall in their first season, losing to Westminster College (Utah) in the first round of the NAIA Regional. Spain coached his first NAIA AllAmerican in 2012 as Marianna Danna was chose at the end of the season, marking the first AllAmerican at Minot State in soccer. Spain and the Beavers finished 1180 in the 2011 season, the transitional campaign of Minot State moving from NAIA to NCAA Division II. Spain came to Minot State after building Yuba College into a junior college powerhouse. Spain started the Yuba College soccer program in 1997, going 1814522 in 12 years with the women s program and 511719 in four seasons with the men s team.
