The Lions won the first game 61-56 at Levien Gymnasium on Saturday, January 21, behind a monster game by junior Mark Cisco, who totaled 18 points and 20 rebounds, a gym record. The Lions held Cornell to 33.9 percent shooting and made clutch free throws down the stretch to seal the victory. CISCO NAMED IVY LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Mark Cisco earned his first career Ivy League Player of the Week honor after he posted 18 points and 20 rebounds last time out vs. Cornell. Cisco set a Levien Gym record for rebounds in a single game and the 18 points also matched Cisco s career high. It was Cisco s second straight doubledouble and his third of the season. He was dominant in the game, playing a season-high 36 minutes, shooting five of nine from the field and eight of nine from the foul line. Two of those free throws came with Columbia ahead by two points and with 21 seconds on the clock. Stepping to the line in a one-and-one situation in a two-point game (56-54) with 21 seconds remaining in the game, Cisco calmly sank both free throws to give the Lions a four-point advantage and two-possession lead. BARBOUR RUNNING THE SHOW Junior guard Brian Barbour has scored in double figures in each of the last five games and is averaging 21.3 points per game during Ivy League action, which is tops in the league. In Columbia s last game vs. Cornell, Barbour scored 15 points and added six rebounds, five assists and two steals. The weekend before, Barbour scored 25 points in each of Columbia s games against Penn and Princeton that began Ivy League play. Barbour currently leads the squad in scoring, assists, steals, free throw percentage and minutes played. THE DEFENSE NEVER RESTS Columbia s defense ranks 18th in the nation in scoring defense. The Lions yield an average of 59 points per game to opponents and are allowing teams to shoot 39.3 percent from the field. That number ranks 36th in the country, out of 345 Division I schools. Columbia has also improved at defending the three, as teams shoot 32.2 percent from long distance against the Lions. Last Game s Starters Pos. No. Name Cl. Ht. KYLE SMITH Head Coach Second season Hamilton 92 Kyle Smith was named Columbia s 22nd head coach in the 110- year history of the men s basketball program on May 2, 2010. In his first season at Columbia, Smith led the Lions to a 15-13 record, the first winning season for a new Columbia head coach in 33 years. Ten of those wins came at home games at Levien Gymnasium, tied for the most in program history in a single season. The Lions increased their scoring output by more than 10 points per game in 2010-11 and scored more than 70 points 15 different times during the season. Under Smith s tutelage, a pair of Columbia guards Noruwa Agho (first team) and Brian Barbour (honorable mention) were named All-Ivy League. Agho was also recognized on a regional level by the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the Metropolitan Writers Association. Smith, who is an 18-year veteran assistant coach at the NCAA Division I level, had worked as the associate head men s basketball coach at St. Mary s College (Ca.) of the West Coast Conference (WCC), for the past nine seasons. At St. Mary s, he played an integral role in building their successful men s basketball program. In 2009-10, the Gaels finished 28-6 and reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division I Men s Basketball Tournament. When Smith arrived at St. Mary s (Calif.) in 2001, the team had won only two games in the previous season. Over the past three years, the school has won 81 games. As the associate head coach of the Gaels, he was responsible for running the team s offense, and coordinating all recruiting activities. He was a vital component of Kyle Smith s Coaching Timeline Institution Seasons San Diego 1992-2000 Air Force 2000-01 St. Mary s 2001-10 Three NCAA Tournament appearances One NIT semifinal appearance Columbia 2010-present the coaching staff that saw the Gaels ascend into the Top 25 in 2010. I am very excited to be the next head men s basketball coach at Columbia, one of the nation s premier universities, says Smith. I am very grateful to Dr. M. Dianne Murphy and President Lee C. Bollinger for this tremendous opportunity. I look forward to the challenge of building an Ivy League championship men s basketball program at Columbia. Before coming to Saint Mary s, Smith spent one season as the top assistant at the Air Force Academy. During his only season with the Falcons, Smith served as the offensive coordinator, recruiting coordinator and helped with player development and scouting. Smith is a 1992 graduate of Hamilton College, where he played basketball, and helped lead the Continentals to a 26-1 record and a #1 ranking in NCAA Division III during his junior season. In his senior season at Hamilton, Smith shot 51.3 percent from three-point range, which still stands as the program record for a single season. That year, Hamilton was ECAC Champions. Smith holds a master s degree in Educational Leadership from the University of San Diego, where he began his coaching career. He and his wife, Katie, have two sons, Rocco and Bo. The family resides in Morningside Heights, close to the Columbia campus. What they're saying about Kyle Smith: "He will be very successful. He has been a huge part of what we've done [at St. Mary's]. It's been he and I together - it's been like having a co-coach." - St. Mary's head coach Randy Bennett "[Smith] is the smartest man in college basketball. I think he has the best feel and overview of basketball programs and coaching of anyone I've ever met." - Richmond head coach Chris Mooney If we haven t said it before, Kyle Smith was a fantastic hire (off the SMC bench). Not only because he s got a good name. Great tactician. - Kyle Whelliston, MidMajority.com

Game 1 #4 Connecticut 70, Columbia 57 STORRS, Conn. -- Columbia took a number of potential knockout blows by fourth-ranked UConn and bounced back from nearly every one. In the end, preseason All-American Jeremy Lamb s 30 points proved to be the difference in the Huskies 70-57 victory over Columbia in the season opener for both teams. The Lions held strong throughout the first half, taking care of the ball and only committed five turnovers. After the Huskies opened up a 13-5 lead on an 8-0 run, Columbia came back and cut the deficit to 15-10 on a Noruwa Agho jumper. UConn then ripped off a 10-0 run to take a 25-10 advantage as Roscoe Smith s dunk ended the run. Columbia responded with a run of its own however to cut the deficit to 27-19 on a Mark Cisco tipin. The Huskies closed out the half on a 10-3 spurt as Jeremy Lamb connected for his third three-pointer of the half to send UConn into the locker room with a 15-point lead. Brian Barbour scored the first four points of the second half and after Agho canned a three-pointer, Columbia trailed by just eight, 39-31, at the 16-minute mark. UConn quickly scored 10 unanswered points to take an 18-point lead and remained ahead by 18, 56-38, with 7:49 to go. Columbia responded by hitting two three-pointers, one by Chris Crockett and another by Meiko Lyles, to get within 11 points, 57-46, with 5:57 left. The Lions trailed by just nine, 65-56, with a minute remaining after Agho hit his fourth triple of the game. That was as close as the Lions got as UConn held on for its first win of the season. We competed, head coach Kyle Smith said after the game. There were alot of positives for us. This should be a confidence builder. Noruwa Agho led the Lions with 16 points and in his first collegiate start, fellow senior Blaise Staab posted a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. The game plan tonight was to put a body on their bigs, Staab said after the game. I thought Mark [Cisco] and me did that. Game 2 FURMAN 62, Columbia 58 NEW YORK - The Columbia men s basketball team suffered a late-game loss to Furman, falling 62-58 despite having the lead with just three minutes left in the game. Junior Brian Barbour led the Lions with 16 points, while senior Noruwa Agho had 12 points in the game. The Lions led 30-19 at halftime as Columbia s stout half-court defense limited the Paladins to just 25 percent shooting from the field. On the other end, the Lions converted on just 36 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes, but sank 10 of their 12 free throw attempts. Columbia grabbed hold of a 40-29 edge when Barbour deflected Bobby Austin s pass and flew down the court to convert a freewheeling reverse layup with 14:51 to play. Furman responded with a 9-2 run over the next four minutes that cut Columbia s lead to four points, but Agho s layup pushed the Lions lead back to six at the 10-minute mark. Furman eventually tied the game 47-47 with 5:46 remaining on an Austin jumper but Alex Rosenberg made a nifty move to the basket and dropped off a pass to Cory Osetkowski who laid it in to give Columbia back a two-point advantage with 3:10 remaining. Brandon Sebirumbi tied the game on his lone basket of the game then Bryant Irwin made his only basket of the game, a three-pointer from right in front of the visiting bench to put Furman ahead 52-49 with two minutes left. Columbia tried to scramble back in the final minutes but the Paladins made eight of 10 from the line down the stretch to seal their second straight win to start the season. Richard Brown led Furman with 15 points and four assists while Barbour s 16 led all scorers. Agho had five assists to go along with his 12 points and Columbia s rookie duo of Osetkowski and Rosenberg had seven points apiece. Game 3 american 66, Columbia 58 NEW YORK - In a game with 11 ties and 11 lead changes, American grabbed hold of a late lead and hit some key shots down the stretch to defeat Columbia 66-58 at Levien Gymnasium on Saturday night. Brian Barbour had 18 points to lead Columbia and Mark Cisco notched a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Playing their first game without All-Ivy League guard Noruwa Agho, sidelined indefinitely with an injury, the Lions used tenacious defense a solid inside-outside offense to take a four-point lead late in the first half. The half ended with both teams tied at 26 after American s Troy Brewer hit a fadeaway jumper as time expired. Neither team led by more than four points for most of the second half. Cisco, who scored nine of his 15 in the second half, scored six straight points for Columbia to boost its lead to 52-48 after a nice pass from Chris Crockett at the six-minute mark. American then went to Charles Hinkle, a transfer from Vanderbilt, who nailed a three-pointer to get the Eagles within a point, then hit two free throws with four minutes left to give American the lead for good. Hinkle scored 16 of his game-high 21 points after halftime. Daniel Munoz, who scored 10 of his 14 points in the second half, then made back-to-back baskets to push American s lead to six as the Eagles held on for their second straight win. Meiko Lyles and Blaise Staab each scored seven points for Columbia, which also received six from Crockett off the bench. Game 4 STONY BROOK 67, Columbia 53 STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Brian Barbour scored 16 of his game-high 23 points in the second half but Stony Brook held on to capture a 67-53 victory over Columbia at Pritchard Gym on Tuesday night. Stony Brook held Columbia to four points over the first 10 minutes, ultimately opening up a 14-point lead at the five-minute mark. Five Columbia players picked up two fouls in the first half and 11 Lions saw action in the first 20 minutes as the Seawolves led 32-20 at halftime. After Stony Brook led by 18 at the 14-minute mark, Columbia began to chip away. The Lions went on an 11-1 run over the next three and a half minutes, capped by a Noah Springwater three ball that cut the Seawolves lead to 48-40. The Lions eventually got to within seven points, 52-45, on a threepointer by Barbour with a hand in his face at the 7:32 mark. But Stony Brook s Leonard Hayes drilled a triple on the next possession to put Stony Brook back in front by 10 points. The Seawolves would remain ahead by double digits for the rest of the game. Barbour scored his 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field. Alex Rosenberg had eight points and four rebounds for the Lions, which received 23 points from their bench in the game. Dave Coley led a balanced Stony Brook attack with 12 points. Bryan Dougher added 11. The Seawolves outrebounded the Lions 45-28 and 21-7 on the offensive glass. Game 5 Columbia 59, manhattan 41 RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Columbia s defense led the way in a 59-41 victory at Manhattan s Draddy Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. The Lions held the Jaspers to 26.2 percent shooting in the game and forced 21 Manhattan turnovers. Columbia got off to a quick start, leading 15-2 after consecutive three-pointers by Meiko Lyles and Alex Rosenberg at the 13:25 mark. The Lions registered assists on five of their first six buckets. The defenses then took over as the shooting cooled for the remainder of the half. Manhattan cut the Lions lead to five twice during the first half but Columbia led 27-19 at intermission. The second half started as the first half ended and Manhattan s Michael Alvarado sank a free throw to get the Jaspers within seven with 16:27 remaining. After Roberto Colonette made one of two free throws at the 14:57 mark, Manhattan trailed by just five, 29-24. But Columbia easily broke Manhattan s press on its next possession and Rosenberg converted a driving layup for a conventional three-point play to put Columbia ahead by eight. That play sparked a 14-0 Columbia run over the next five minutes, punctuated by a fast-break layup by Lyles that gave the Lions a 43-24 advantage. Columbia s lead never dipped below 12 points the rest of the way as the Lions made seven of eight free throws in the final five minutes to wrap up the road win. Brian Barbour was Columbia s high man with 22 points, four assists, two steals and just one turnover in 38 minutes of action. Barbour was one of Columbia s many ball handlers that deftly navigated a changing, trapping Manhattan defense. The Jaspers came into the game having forced more than 20 turnovers a game. In his first collegiate start, Rosenberg scored 11 points, grabbed five rebounds and had three steals. John Daniels had 11 rebounds, one shy of his career high. Game 6 Columbia 104, swarthmore 42 NEW YORK - Thirteen different players scored for Columbia in a 104-42 rout over Division III Swarthmore at Levien Gymnasium on Monday night. The Lions handed out 28 assists on 36 field goals and held their opponent to fewer than 45 points for the second straight game. Meiko Lyles scored a career-high 17 points to lead four Lions in double figures. Alex Rosenberg added 15 points, Steve Egee had a careerhigh 13 and Mark Cisco contributed 12 points and six rebounds. Columbia led 60-26 at halftime after shooting 60 percent from the field (21 of 35) in the half. The Lions also sank 10 three-pointers in the first 20 minutes. The second half continued in the same vein, although Columbia s shooting cooled a bit. The Lions hit 45.5 percent of their shots and made six threes in the second half, but held the Garnet to 25 percent shooting from the field and just 16 second-half points. Columbia last broke the century mark in last season s home opener, a 108-74 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore. The 28 assists were five short of Columbia s program record of 33, set in a 101-78 win vs. Wake Forest in 1969. Columbia registered assists on its first 10 field goals of the game, helping the Lions to a 32-11 lead. Columbia s 16 three-pointers tied a program record, set in 2007 against Polytechnic. With 2.4 seconds left and the game tied at 45, Mark Cisco was fouled after grabbing a defensive rebound and sent to the free throw line for two shots. Cisco s first shot hit off the back rim but he calmly sank the second shot after a Holy Cross timeout to give Columbia its sixth straight victory. You have to think positively, Cisco said when asked about his clutch free throw. If you don t think positively, nothing positive is going to happen. After shooting a scorching hot percentage in its previous four wins, Columbia made just 16 percent of its shots in the first half. Holy Cross converted 50 percent of its field goals and went into halftime with a 30-14 advantage. With 17:50 remaining in the second half, the Crusaders Phil Beans made a turnaround jumper near the hoop and was fouled. After Beans converted the three-point play, Holy Cross led 35-15. Columbia then went on a deliberate 15-0 run over the next 6:25 to get back in the game. Chris Crockett s three-pointer on an assist by Alex Rosenberg made it 35-30 at the 11:25 mark. After Crockett s triple, Beans responded with a three ball of his own to end the Holy Cross drought but the Lions still chipped away at their deficit. With 8:21 left, Cisco converted a three-point play to make it a onepoint game, 38-37. Each team found it difficult to score in the final minutes as the game was tied at 45-45 on Cisco s jumper with 2:58 remaining. Holy Cross had the ball with 18 seconds remaining and R.J. Evans ran the clock down and drove into the lane. He took a jumper contested by Cisco that was short. Both Evans and Cisco went for the rebound. Cisco came up with the loose ball and Evans was whistled for a foul with 2.4 seconds on the clock. Game 11 Columbia 63, Liu 53 NEW YORK - Columbia used another strong defensive effort, in which the Lions forced 23 Long Island turnovers and held the Blackbirds to 36.7 percent shooting in a 63-53 victory at Levien Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. It is the seventh straight win for Columbia, which received 12 points each from Mark Cisco and John Daniels. Brian Barbour added 11 points and six assists in the win. LIU came into the game averaging 77.6 points per game while Columbia s defense allowed opponents to average 56.7 points per game so it was a game of contrasting styles. After it took both teams a few minutes to warm up offensively, the high-scoring Blackbirds jumped out to a 17-12 on a Kenny Onyechi jumper at the 11:12 mark. LIU led 22-16 with eight minutes to play when Columbia s defense clamped down. Two possessions later, Cory Osetkowski hit a turnaround jumper from the foul line, sparking the Lions on a 12-1 run to end the half. The Blackbirds went without a field goal for the last 8:59 of the first half. Columbia opened up a 38-27 lead with 15:33 remaining in the game when Mark Cisco scored in the paint. LIU then tried to accelerate the pace, switching to a full court trap and zone defense. The Blackbirds cut their deficit to 40-36 with 12 minutes left but Noah Springwater s three-pointer gave Columbia a seven-point cushion. Steve Egee also made a pair of threes in a spurt that pushed Columbia s lead back to 10 points, 53-43, with six minutes to play. LIU s Jamal Olasewere converted an acrobatic layup after Egee s second triple to bring LIU back within seven. Brian Barbour then responded with a three ball from the top of the key to put Columiba back in front by 10, 56-46, with 5:26 remaining. Columbia still led by six, 59-53, with 1:11 left but John Daniels broke away for an uncontested dunk to put the exclamation point on the Lions seventh straight win. Game 12 marist 79, columbia 59 POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Columbia faced significant deficits in the first and second half in Wednesday night s 79-59 loss to Marist. The Lions were able to rally from a 13-point first-half deficit to take a one-point lead early in the second half but Columbia was unable to come back from Marist s spurt midway through the second half. After Columbia took a 40-39 lead on Mark Cisco bucket with 16:40 left in the game, Marist went right back in front on a tear-drop jumper by Isaiah Morton. The Red Foxes closed out the game by outscoring the Lions 40-19 and cruised to a win at the McCann Center. Marist led 27-14 with eight minutes remaining in the first half but the Lions came back, paced by eight points by Brian Barbour, to get within three points, 36-33 at halftime. After Cisco s basket gave Columbia its first lead since it was a 4-2 game, Morton s answer on the end propelled Marist to a 10-2 run that put the Red Foxes ahead 49-42. John Daniels scored on a putback to cut the deficit to five but Marist ramped up its transition game to pull away from Columbia. The defeat snaps Columbia s seven-game win streak, its longest in 30 years. It was the fourth straight win for Marist on its home court. Brian Barbour s 15 points led Columbia, which also received 14 points and seven rebounds from Cisco. Cisco made seven of his 10 shots from the floor. Devin Price had 22 for Marist to lead all scorers. Chavaughn Lewis scored 18 off the bench for the Red Foxes, including 14 in the second half. Game 13 Columbia 77, lafayette 67 NEW YORK -- Trailing by 11 points at halftime, Columbia nearly erased Lafayette s lead by the 16-minute media timeout in the second half and made big plays down the stretch to capture a 77-67 win at Levien Gymnasium. Both teams were on fire from the field to start the game. After Columbia jumped out to a 4-0 lead, the Leopards made five straight field goals, four of them from three-point range, to tie the game at 14. A Blaise Staab three-point play gave Columbia a 19-17 lead with 12 minutes left. Lafayette then unleashed a 16-3 run over the next four and a half minutes to grab a 33-22 advantage. Lafayette led 48-37 at halftime on the strength of nine first-half threepointers. The Leopards shot 69.2 percent from the floor in the half while Columbia also shot an impressive 63.6 percent in the half. While Lafayette s shooting cooled in the second half, Columbia s remained strong. Trailing by 11 to start the half, Columbia got a lift from Meiko Lyles. Lyles converted a conventional three-point play to start the second half then found John Daniels down low for a dunk to quickly cut Lafayette s lead to 48-42. After a Mark Cisco jumper made it a four-point game, Lyles nailed a three-pointer to bring the Lions within a point with 17 minutes left. Lafayette still led 53-50 but Lyles connected again from deep to tie the game at 53 apiece with 10:42 remaining. That triple sparked a 10-0 Columbia run over the next three and a half minutes, giving the Lions a 60-53 lead. The Leopards came back to tie the game at 63 and regained a onepoint edge, 67-66, on two free throws by Ryan Willen with 3:36 left to play. On Columbia s next possession, Mark Cisco grabbed an offensive rebound of a missed three-pointer and found a cutting Daniels for a layup that put the Lions back in front, 68-67. Lafayette got an open look from three on its next possession but the shot was long and Lyles came down with the key defensive rebound. On the other end, Barbour found Lyles open in the near corner for a threepointer, Lyles third of the game. It was a huge shot by the sophomore and gave Columbia a four-point cushion with two minutes to play. Game 15 Columbia 66, colgate 59 HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Columbia used another strong defensive effort and got key contributions from three rookies and sophomore Meiko Lyles, who had another 20-point outing, in a 66-59 win at Colgate on Wednesday night. It was the third straight win for the Lions, who have won 10 of their last 11 games. Colgate led 19-9 midway through the first half but the Lions ripped off nine straight points to get within a point, 19-18, on a three-pointer by Noah Springwater with nine minutes left. The Raiders eventually led 29-22 but the Lions came back again to score seven straight points. The two teams headed into halftime tied at 29. At the start of the second half, Lyles went to work, scoring nine straight points for Columbia on four straight shots. Brian Barbour then converted a layup on a foul to give Columbia a 40-38 lead. Colgate tied it back up at 40 on a Sterling Melville layup but Lyles nailed another triple to give the Lions a 43-40 edge with 12:21 left. The Lions opened up a 50-44 lead after Springwater stole the ball and tossed it ahead to Blaise Staab for a breakaway layup with eight minutes left. Held without a field goal for more than eight minutes, Colgate got back into the game from the foul line. Down 50-44, the Raiders made six straight free throws to tie the game but Lyles connected on his third trey of the second half to put the Lions back in front, 53-50 at the four-minute mark. The Lions led by two, 56-54, under the two-minute mark with Colgate holding possession. Springwater made another key defensive play, stealing the ball from the Colgate point guard. Barbour then found Alex Rosenberg cutting to the hoop to give the Lions a four-point advantage. Mike Venezia connected on a long three-pointer to cut the lead to one, but Cory Osetkowski found Barbour on a backdoor cut to put the Lions ahead 60-57 with a minute left. Barbour made four free throws in the final minute and Lyles made two with three seconds left to ice the game for the Lions. It is the 10th win for Columbia in its last 11 games and its third straight victory. Game 16 Columbia 65, ELON 60 ELON, N.C. - Five days away from the start of Ivy League play, Columbia faced a tough, hard-nosed opponent in a loud, compact gymnasium. It was the type of game that Lions fans usually see in late January and February and Columbia made the types of plays down the stretch that it will need to win close games over the next two months. Brian Barbour scored 20 points and ran the point flawlessly while Mark Cisco scored a career-high 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds to help lift the Lions to a 65-60 victory over Elon at Alumni Gym on Sunday afternoon. It is the Lions fourth straight victory and their 11th in the last 12 games. Elon controlled the offensive glass in the first half, outrebounding Columbia 25-13 and 12-1 on the offensive boards in the first 20 minutes. That margin helped the Phoenix open a nine-point advantage late in the first half. In the final minute, Barbour nailed his second triple of the half and brought Columbia within six points, 34-28, at halftime. Cisco and Meiko Lyles combined to score Columbia s first 11 points of the second half as the Lions sliced into Elon s lead and trailed 40-39 with 14:49 to go. Cory Osetkowski entered the game shortly after and scored the next five points for the Lions and helped tie the game at 44 with 10:46 remaining. Alex Rosenberg s three-pointer gave the Lions a 51-49 lead at the six-minute mark, but Elon tied the game on a putback by Ryley Beaumont on its next possession. Cisco scored back-to-back baskets that put Columbia back in front, 55-51, with four minutes left but Elon big man Lucas Troutman responded with two buckets of his own to tie it for 11th time in the game. Barbour then took control, draining two consecutive 15-foot jumpers, sandwiched around an Elon basket, to put the Lions ahead 59-57 with two minutes left. Elon s Austin Hamilton missed a potential go-ahead three ball from the far corner on Elon s next possession and with the shot clock winding down on the other end, Lyles penetrated and dished off to an open Cisco for a two-handed jam that gave Columbia a four-point cushion, 61-57, with a minute left. Game 17 penn 66, columbia 64 NEW YORK - Zack Rosen scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half as Penn held on to a 66-64 victory at Levien Gym on Friday night in the Ivy League opener for both teams. Brian Barbour (career-high 25 points) matched Rosen shot for shot in the second half, when he scored 15 of his 25, and his last-second desperation three-pointer after an intentionally missed free throw went just long as Penn secured the two-point win. Columbia led 27-23 at halftime behind a 12-2 run to end the half, including eight points by Barbour during the stretch. Penn scored the first eight points of the second half and opened up a 31-27 advantage on a Miles Cartwright three-pointer with 17:32 left.penn maintained its lead and extended it to nine points, 59-50, with two minutes remaining after a jumper by Rosen with a defender in his face. Two free throws by Barbour made it a 59-52 game and then Meiko Lyles buried a three-pointer to get the Lions within four, 59-55, with 1:23 left. Barbour and Rosenberg each made two free throws after a jumper by Rosen to cut the Quakers lead to 61-59 with 30 seconds remaining. Rob Belcore made one of two free throws and Barbour followed with consecutive layups sandwiched around a pair of Tyler Bernardini foul shots as Penn still led by a point with six seconds left. The Lions fouled Bernardini again, and again the senior sank two free throws with five seconds left, setting up Columbia s final possession. Chris Crockett brought the ball down court and was quickly fouled by Penn s Cartwright. After making the first free throw, Crockett intentionally missed the second one off the back iron. Mark Cisco tapped the ball back out to the three-point line, where Barbour gathered it near the left wing. After a dribble and with a defender flying at him, he stepped back and launched an off-balance threepointer that went just long as the buzzer sounded, giving Penn the win in the league opener. It was a good tip out, it was a great play, Barbour said after the game. I ve just got to hit it. Barbour s 25 points came along with six assists against two turnovers. Cisco did not miss a shot, going five of five from the field and two of two from the foul line, for 12 points. Lyles added 11. After a hard-fought 66-64 setback to Penn on Friday night, the Lions were thirsty for their first league win on Saturday. Princeton was thirsty for a win too, coming off a 67-59 loss at Cornell in its Ivy League opener. And it was Princeton that made enough plays and hit just enough free throws down the stretch to emerge with a 62-58 win over Columbia on Saturday night. The game remained close throughout the early stages of the second half. With 11 minutes remaining, the Lions opened up their largest lead of the game, taking a 41-35 advantage on a three ball by Barbour. For the next 10 minutes, the Lions went without a field goal as Princeton mounted a deliberate rally. After a Patrick Saunders triple, Ian Hummer hit one of two free throws to tie the game at 41 with six minutes to play. T.J. Bray, who had six steals in the game, stole the ball on the next Columbia possession and found a streaking Ben Hazel for a layup that gave the Tigers a two-point edge. Bray then nailed a three ball to put Princeton ahead 46-41, capping an 11-0 run. Columbia made three of four free throws to get back within two points, 46-44, but Hummer scored six points of Princeton s next eight points to help the Tigers take a 54-46 lead with 1:24 remaining. As happened a night earlier, Columbia s full-court press and an opponent s erratic free-throw shooting helped the Lions rally. Steve Egee drew a foul on a three-point attempt and sank all three free throws to make the score 56-51. After Douglas Davis made one of two foul shots, Egee s layup cut the deficit to four. The Lions fouled Davis on the next possession and he came up empty on the other end, allowing Barbour to sink two free throws to make it a two-point game, 57-55 with 31 seconds left. Columbia trailed by three with six seconds left, as it had against Penn a night earlier. Princeton employed the same strategy, fouling Barbour before he could get off a three-point attempt, sending him to the line for two foul shots. Barbour missed the first and made the second as Columbia trailed by two, 60-58. The Lions fouled Davis again on the inbounds pass but the senior guard calmly sank two foul shots to salt the game away for the visitors. Game 19 columbia 61, cornell 56 NEW YORK - Mark Cisco scored 18 points and hauled in 20 rebounds, setting a Levien Gymnasium record, as the Lions held Cornell to 33.9 percent shooting in a 61-56 victory in front of 2,654 fans on Saturday night. Columbia led 27-22 at halftime after both teams did not shoot well from the field to begin the game. Columbia hit 32.3 percent of its shots in the half and Cornell made just 27.6 percent, including two of ten from three-point range. The Lions opened up a 10-point lead, 48-38, on two Cisco free throws at the 6:52 mark and still led by 10 when Brian Barbour found Cisco open along the base line for a jumper at the six-minute mark. Being an Ivy League game, it remained close in the final minutes. Drew Ferry came back on Cornell s next possession to bury a three-pointer to cut the deficit to seven, 50-43. Four minutes later, with Columbia still up by seven, Ferry drained another triple to make it a 54-50 game with 1:53 left to play. Cornell kept up its full-court pressure and forced two Columbia turnovers that let the Big Red back into the contest. Two Chris Wroblewski free throws made it a 56-54 game with 32 seconds left and Cornell had to foul to extend the game. With 21 seconds left, Ferry fouled Cisco after an inbounds pass. Cisco had made six of seven from the line in the game already and calmly sank both foul shots to make it a 58-54 game. After Wroblewski hit a contested baseline jumper, the Big Red fouled Barbour, who also calmly drained a pair of foul shots to keep Columbia s lead at two possession, 60-56. Cisco posted his second straight double-double with 18 points and 20 boards and also added three assists and two blocked shots. Without Mark, they win that game by 10 points, Barbour said after the game. He was a beast on the boards. Barbour finished with 14 points and five assists and Meiko Lyles had a strong game with 15 points and four rebounds. Our defensive end was sensational today, head coach Kyle Smith said after the game. A big key was to get it into Mark. He s relentless on the boards.
