SPORT Shaping African University Sport through Excellence, Honour & Victory UJ students and staff selected for 19th CUCSA Games Team South Africa for the 19th Confederation of University and College Sports Association (CUCSA) Games has been announced and we are proud to celebrate our very own students and staff members who have selected to represent the South African University team. Rachel Leistra Skhumbuzo Mthembu Amanda Mthandi The Games are scheduled to take place 18-22 June 2018 in Gaborone, Botswana. Team SA will be competing in the following sporting codes: Athletics, Basketball, Football, Table Tennis and Volleyball. The official hashtag for the Games is: #OneNessThroughSport. The event will be televised on SABC 2 on Beyond Boundaries on Saturday, 24 June 2018. 1

Winners of Varsity Sports 7s in 2017 UJ 7s Rugby prove to be a global force The Champions of University 7s Rugby are truly proving to be a force to be reckoned with on the local, continental and international field! In 2016, the University s men s 7s Rugby team took part for the first time in the Kings of 7s Rugby Africa which place in Nairobi, Kenya and came out victorious. The team was invited again in 2017, and were crowned Kings of 7s Rugby for the second consecutive year. The team further ended the year off with a bang after winning the national Varsity Sports 7s Rugby tournament which took place in December 2017, in Durban. Earlier in May 2017, the UJ 7s Rugby team travelled to France to compete in the Centrale 7 tournament. The first time UJ competed in the tournament was in 2014 and came out on top, four years later, UJ won the plate trophy! RESULTS UJ 42-12 Ocean 7s UJ 14-17 Seventies UJ 36-5 Euskadi UJ 26-28 La Rochelle UJ 40-7 Germany UJ 48-5 Finland UJ 7s team at Centrale 7 tournament in France UJ 7s wins Costa Blanca 7s in Spain The team completed their second-leg of the tour with another victory at the Costa Blanca 7s tournament which took place in Spain after ousting United Kingdom-based Marauders 33-5 out of the final. UJ Rugby players selected for the Junior Boks Team Two UJ players and one technical staff member have been called up to the Under-20 National Rugby Team that will compete in the Under-20 World Championships in France, 30 May-17 June 2018. Banyana Banyana will be competing in the 2018 Africa Women s Cup of Nations qualifiers. Former UJ student and football goalkeeper, Mduduzi Khumalo, has become the second Nedbank Ke Yona Team Graduate to be part of a Nedbank Cup winning side after many years. His team, Free State Stars, sealed the 2018 Cup victory against Maritzburg United on 19 May 2018 in Cape Town. RUGBY Two-time UJ graduate and former UJ rugby player, Aphiwe Dyantyi has received his first Springboks call-up following his outstanding season with the Emirates Lions. Aphiwe, whose rugby career started in the internal residence rugby league, will represent the nation in the June Rugby Internationals. NETBALL UJ students and netball players, Jodie Brown (Wing Defence, Goal Defence and Goal Keeper) and Kim- Roche Holmes (Wing attack and Goal Attack) have been selected for the Golden Fireballs Netball Team currently taking part in the Brutal Fruit Netball Premier League which kicked off earlier in May 2018.
