Debriefing of 18 June simulation session in Le Havre 2 scenarios, deck on one side, engine-room on the other side, were played in Le Havre on June 18. The debriefing that was held afterward was very fruitful, and even anticipated the assessment session to come. The pleasant get together diner compensated for the difficulties in traveling to Le Havre in a train and airport strike period

Reminder of the deck scenario : duration 50 min + preparation A RoRo ship is passing NAB Tower, approaching the Solent and Portsmouth fairway. 3 officers on the bridge. Main actions to be carried out : - Report to VTS Southampton and QHM. - Enter NAB channel and compensate current. - Manage trafic and VTS communications with a steering gear hydraulic failure. - Make way through the Solent while Visibility reduces, taking care of a few sailboats in the way and meeting an outbound ferry. - Manage to draw up a new plan when Portsmouth is suddenly closed and asks ship to go to anchorage. This scenario was found interesting and very demanding in terms of BRM. Opinion was that the steering gear failure was not necessary.

Reminder of the engine-room scenario: duration 1 hour Ship is sailing away from a port, gathering speed. Engineer has to carry out the usual operations when ship is full away : - Start shaft and turbo alternators, stop diesel generators, fresh water separator, etc. During the exercice, engineer responds to alarms and investigates origin of problems, decides whether he will repair now, whether it s worth advising the bridge

Combined scenario : As planned in June in Le Havre, a combined scenario has been designed. It takes into account parts of scenarios submitted by members of the Core group. After completion, scenario will be played in Kalmar in February 2015

KALMAR Maritime Academy

Kalmar simulators where the experiment will take place

A proposal for a combined scenario to be run in every MET 2 bridges, 2 engine-rooms 1 ship outbound, 1 ship inbound Bridge : 3 cadets; ER : 2 cadets Approx 90 minutes + preparation + general debriefing

Requirements to implement such a scenario Bridge 1 instructor on each bridge 2 VHF (ch 16 + ch VTS) 1 UFH or intercom for ER 1 set of UHF for bridge - officer? File with information on ship and current voyage ECDIS AIS Check-lists Engine-room 1 instructor in each ER 1 UHF or intercom for Bridge File with information on current state of ER, including review of recent failures and problems Check-lists

Bridge Trained for Management level English : good Requirements, level of knowledge and expertize : To be discussed Engine-room Trained for Management level English : good

Bridge Preparation before start of exercice Passage plan mostly ready (has been prepared on the morning before) Engine-room Preparation before start of exercice Manuel of engine studied during the morning before

EVENTS during the scenario (to be discussed) Ship outbound On the Bridge Check bridge ready, propeller clear, test engine. Departure briefing, Communication with fore and aft deck Move the ship away from the berth, without tugs (no pilot onboard), Swing the ship around? Communications with port and VTS In the engine-room Departure briefing Check ER ready for sailing Prepare for sea conditions Organize with bridge change from MDO to HFO

EVENTS during the scenario (to be discussed) Ship outbound (continued) On the Bridge :? In the engine-room: Dirty sea chest? Problems forcing ER to communicate with bridge and temporarily degrade manoeuvring possibilities and put stress upon bridge

EVENTS during the scenario (to be discussed) Ship inbound On the Bridge End of sea passage check-list ER manned and ready Arrival Briefing Communications with VTS and port Etc. In the engine-room Arrival briefing (work in port?) Vessel still at sea speed ER ready, stop shaft, Start DG Check thrusters ready Change from HFO to MDO? Etc.

Next steps : - Finalize the scenario, on a general basis (not too detailed) - End of October, send it to the coregroup members and ask them to build a detailed scenario and run it. - 28th of November, latest, coregroup members send us the results in terms of level of skills required, difficulties of assessment, etc. - By the 15th of December, use the feedback to develop the scenario to be run in Kalmar. - Define a date for the experiment. - Assessment session? Check possibility in Kalmar. - Estimation of cost of 1 cadet per academy in Kalmar for 2 days + travel.
