The SR Concept What is a Supply Chain Roundtable (SR)? A platform for first-tier supplier participants to come together in a precompetitive, collaborative environment to monitor the sustainability of fisheries in a specific fishery/aquaculture sector or region. Opportunity to review the performance of improvement projects (both for fisheries and aquaculture), and address any issues hindering improvement progress. Not always an SFP-led initiative Not just an annual meeting in Boston, Brussels, etc. Includes regular technical briefings, updates, as well as development of annual SR goals and objectives. 3

Asia Pacific Squid SR Asia Pacific Squid SR Background September 2014 Meeting of North American and EU importers, updates on regional squid fisheries, improvement efforts, and target fisheries March 2015 - Letter sent to Chinese fishing authorities requesting assistance to improve Chinese squid fishery, co-signed by 12 NA and EU buyers (SR Participants) and 4 Chinese exporters June 2015 - China Blue Sustainability Institute facilitated a meeting in Shantou, China with the fishing authorities and 40 stakeholders to discuss sustainability issues, included Shantou Fisheries Bureau, local researchers, exporters/processors, MSC-China, etc. Funded by 6 foreign importers. 2015 (ongoing) Sea Farms/Sea Fresh with Ocean Outcomes launch Pacific flying squid improvement effort 2016/7 - China Blue developed and revised FIP workplan for Chinese loliqo squid, while SFP coordinated FIP fund raising with NA/EU buyers 8

SAS SR Challenges 1. Lack of publically availability of sustainability evaluations 2. Influence of markets where sustainability today is not a mayor concern like Asia, southern EU countries. 3. Large fleet and catches, and lack of management in international waters. 4. Historical political disagreements between nations sharing stocks (Argentina-Falklands and Peru-Chile). 5. Traditional stock assessment models have not been designed for such a short living species (1 2 years)
SAS SR Opportunities 1. Increasing demand in sustainability (EU, North America & Latin America). 2. Producing & processing companies more willing to improve sustainability for marketing reasons. 3. Alignment of interests with South East Asia Squid SR. 4. Squid exports in SA represent a great opportunity for aligning Industry interest in starting FIPs. 5. Improving the Sustainability of the Japanese Flying Squid Fishery in China Further Scoping Needs and Opportunities Asia-Pacific Squid & North American Squid Supplier Roundtable March 20th 2017 Boston
Project background Dec. 2015 Mar. 2016: Sea Farms Ltd & its UK partners commissioned pre-assessment by Ocean Outcomes (O2) of Japanese flying squid (JFS - Todarodes pacificus) in the Yellow and East China Seas. It confirmed the lack of data for the Chinese fishery and the weaknesses of the fishery management. Oct. 2016-17: O2, Sea Farms Ltd. & partners (M&S, Sainsbury s, Tesco and WWF-UK) conducting further research & scoping for FIP project design - three major goals: Better understanding of changing Yellow & East China Seas JFS fishery Catch composition. Establishing a robust verification mechanism for origin of squid landings Identify precise fishing areas. Specific recommendations on improvement needs-design and comprehensive description of major stakeholders and roles in potential FIP. oceanoutcomes.org

Roadmap to improving the JFS fishery management under the Chinese jurisdiction Government support (all levels) is essential - strong political will & actions will be critical. Shandong Marine Resource and Environment Research Institute (SMRERI) has been identified as a key advisor to Provincial Government; Shanghai Ocean University (SOU) key to Central Government. Three logical steps planned during 2017-18 to catalyze government actions: Step 1. Make the case: joint effort from critical mass of major international buyers, national seafood association (CAPPMA) and SMRERI - develop a report elaborating management issues and social and economic importance of the Yellow Sea JFS fishery. Step 2. Secure commitment from Shandong Provincial government: advise provincial Ocean and Fishery Department to allocate resources to SMRERI for improved monitoring of the JFS fishery in the north Yellow Sea beginning 2018 to guide sustainable management. Step 3. Secure Central Government support: Engage SOU to convince Central Government to take JFS as a national fishery management. Larger opportunity Ultimately, improved management of shared JFS stock will need collaboration of P.R. China & R. Korea; Current bilateral fishing agreement needs updating to prioritize JFS and include more sustainability mandates; FIP NGOs, leading industries, researchers from two sides in good position to start creating enabling conditions for both national governments to collaborate further. oceanoutcomes.org

What has happened previously? August 16 First approach from SFP with WWF-Peru related to initiating the FIP September 16 Discussions with main peruvian jumbo squid processors and fishermen which resulted in a draft MoU among them and authorities September 16 The industry asked for WWF-Peru to act as a coordinator for the FIP, acknowledging current work on the mahi mahi FIP October 16 SFP held a SR and a State of Intent was signed by Spanish and French buyers expressing their interest to initiate a FIP for Peruvian jumbo squid
Where are we now? February 17 Seed funding was secured to start and take step one of the process
