High School Sports Provincial Alpine Championships March 5 th - 7th, 2018 To: Zone Coordinators and School-Based Coaches EVENTS AND DATES Snowboard GS - 2 runs combined time OSV- Sun Peaks Race Center Monday March 5th Ski GS 2 runs combined time OSV Sun Peaks Race Center Tuesday March 6th Ski and Snowboard Terrain GS one run Sun Dance Terrain Park designed for race Wednesday March 7 th TRAINING Teams are welcome to arrive early to conduct pre-race training. All early arrivals must make individual arrangements with the Resort. Race day training/inspection runs will be announced at coaches /team meetings along with other pertinent details. Contact Glenn Johnston at gjohnston@sd45.bc.ca for more information. LOCATION Sun Peaks Race Center Sun Peaks, BC. TEAMS Ski teams consist of a maximum of 6 skiers. The 4 best times on each team are used in the points calculation. Snowboard teams consist of a maximum of 6 riders. The 4 best times on each team are used in the points calculation. See the BCSS Alpine website for examples of points calculation under Rules and Regulations. ELIGIBILITY As per the Skiing Commission Eligibility Rules (Refer to the BC School Sports Handbook). ENTRY FORMS: This year all teams will register online. Each school will register each team individually. Teams will seed their racers at the time of registration for both the GS race and the TGS race. Teams also order their lift tickets in advance. Three cheques will need to be brought to the Sunday night registration. One cheque will be payable to North Shore Secondary Schools Athletic Association for the racer registration fee, another $100.00 cheque payable to North Shore Secondary Schools Athletic Association for the bib deposit, while the third cheque will be payable to Sun Peaks Resort for lift tickets. Online registration will be due by Friday,February 16, 2018. Please advise if this will be a challenge.

ENTRY FEE $130.00 per racer (includes: race fees, awards, banquet dinner, tshirt, tube park - lift tickets are separate but must be ordered in advance). MAKE ALL CHEQUES FOR REGISTRATION PAYBLE TO North Shore Secondary Schools Athletic Association. Please bring correct amount in cheque form with you to the mandatory check-in from 5:30-7:00pm Sunday March 4 th, 2018. Check in will be held in a conference room at the Sun Peaks Grand Hotel. LIFT PASSES Each team will be responsible for pre-ordering lift passes when they fill out the online Registration. FOR RACE DAYS On March 5th-7th ONLY, all tickets are discounted by 40% and are subject to GST: $136.08 per Youth for the three days of the event* $170.10 per Adult for the three days of the event *in addition to $130 provincial racer fee One complimentary lift pass for a coach will provided to each team of 6 for the duration of the tournament, or 2 for a team of 12. Please note that these tickets are only valid during the three days of racing, March 5 th to 7 th. If you arrive early (prior to March 5 th ), you will need to arrange for your own passes through their online advance ticket registration system. BIB DEPOSIT Each team must submit an extra cheque for $100 as a bib deposit. This cheque will be returned to you once team bibs are returned in full. PLEASE BRING THIS CHEQUE, MADE OUT TO NORTH SHORE SECONDARY SCHOOLS ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION, TO THE COACHES MEETING SUNDAY NIGHT. AWARDS/PRIZES Awards will be presented Monday and Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 pm at the Sun Peaks Plaza. Tuesday awards will be held at the Banquet in the Grand Hall of the Sun Peaks Grand Hotel. Provincial Banners and final awards will be awarded on the final day of racing on Wednesday, March 7 th, 2018. TEAM CHECK-IN 5:30-7:00pm on Sunday, March 4 th in the Sun Peaks Grand Hotel. Here you will receive race rules, event information and lift tickets, and can confirm start lists etc. so it is critical that you are present. If you know ahead of time you cannot make it during those times due to travel arrangements etc., please contact Glenn Johnston at gjohnston@sd45.bc.ca prior to March 2 nd. For those teams who cannot make this team check-in, if pre-arranged, we can meet you at 7:00am the next morning at the Sun

Peaks Grand Conference Room to check in your team. COACHES MEETING If required, we will have Coaches' Meetings at 7:30 am each race day at the Sun Peaks Grand Conference Room. Teams will be notified if this is to occur AGM & Tube Park This year, the AGM will be held at the Sun Peaks Grand Hotel at 5:00 pm on Monday March 5 th. During this AGM, all, of our racers are invited to go to the Sun Peaks Tube Park between 5:00 7:00pm. We have an exclusive rental on the park, and the tube park is right behind the Sun Peaks Grand Hotel. TEAM DIGITAL PHOTOS 7:00 to 9:00 am Tuesday March 6th - Location Base of Sun Peaks, in front of Giant Ski Chair in the village. Teams will be assigned a five minute window for group portraits. CODE OF CONDUCT The race committee requests all coaches to include the following information on schoolbased handouts given prior to the race and have athletes sign and return it. It is expected that all participating athletes will: Demonstrate superior sportsmanlike behaviour Not consume any illegal substances Demonstrate respect for the Resort property and staff and all regulations pertaining to same Please apprise all athletes of BCSS athletic code of conduct. ROLE OF COACHES 1. To ensure the wholesome active participation of your athletes at all times. 2. To assist the race committee in marshalling athletes and serving in volunteer roles as needed or requested. RACE RULES Helmets are mandatory for skiers and snowboarders in all races. SCORING Seeding is based on race results. Points per seed are calculated the same as in past years (1st place = number of teams entered. For example, if 12 teams enter the race, first place in each seed = 12 points, second place in each seed = 11 points etc.). If only 6 racers manage to qualify for the fifth seed (other racers having DNFd), the 6 racers score 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, and 7. Scoring system applies to both skiers and snowboarders. Both boys and girls teams are made up of 6 racers, of which the top 4 will count towards the point total. This means you will need 4 racers to finish in order to be competitive. A team of 3 snowboarders for girls was passed last AGM. For further details refer to the website: http://www.bcssalpine.com. ZONE BERTH DISTRIBUTION There are 8 Zones represented at BC Secondary School Championships. Vancouver Island North Shore/Pemberton 3 berths Vancouver Fraser Valley/Burnaby Okanagan 1 berth West Kootenay East Kootenay 3 berths Northern 3 berths Each zone holds a qualifying race. The top qualifying teams fill the berths for the zone. Individual qualifiers may participate as per existing rules. RACE RULES AND COACH RESPONSIBILITIES 1. CSA rules apply for skiing and snowboarding 2. Ski racers may finish a race with any three pieces of equipment 3. Racers may not put a piece of equipment back on

4. Courses for the events may be somewhat shorter and/or easier in order to accommodate a wide range of abilities 5. Helmets are required for snowboard and ski races 6. Smoking is prohibited in the vicinity of the competitions 7. One coach from each team MUST attend coaches meetings 8. ALL COACHES MUST ASSIST WITH THE SUPERVISION OF ATHLETES IN ACCOMODATIONS - the Resort needs our support 9.
