DATE: SAFARICOM MARATHON 2011 EVENT INFORMATION SHEET Saturday 25 th June 2011. The race briefing for all runners will be held at 1800 hours on Friday 24 th June at the Safaricom Village. LOCATION: Lewa Wildlife Conservancy (LWC). Directions to LWC by road from Nairobi are as follows: Take the Thika road out of Nairobi. Pass through Thika, Makuyu, and Karatina. 11.5km after Karatina turn right (signposted to Buffalo Springs and Samburu) - if you reach Nyeri Town you have missed the turning. Pass through Naro Moru, Nanyuki, and Timau. Approximately 10km further on is the Meru/Isiolo junction. Turn Left at this junction heading to Isiolo. About 3km further on, at the bottom of the hill, on the left hand side is the main entrance to LWC. FUNDRAISING: The primary objective of the event is to raise funds for the conservation and community projects in Kenya. We are asking competitors to enter into the spirit of the event and do all they can to raise Ksh 50,000 or more per person to benefit these worthy causes. In 2010 Ksh 45,000,000 was raised and this year we hope to raise even more. The beneficiaries of the event are projects that work towards the conservation of Kenya s wildlife, provide education for children in rural areas, work with local communities to improve their livelihoods and provide healthcare. Applications for each race will be accepted on a first come first served basis. There are no exceptions. Entries will not be accepted without a signed disclaimer or completed entry form. The closing date for entries is Friday 20 th May 2011. If all places are filled before the 20 th May the entry process will close in advance of the deadline. FULL MARATHON RACE: This is an individuals race. The entry fee is Ksh 3,500 per person. The race will start at 0715 on Saturday the 25 th June. HALF MARATHON RACE: The half marathon is a team event. There are no individual entries. A maximum of 10, minimum of 5 people can enter per team. There are no restrictions on male / female split. Teams will be accepted on a first come first served basis. The entry fee for the team event is Ksh 100,000 per team. The race will start at 0715 on Saturday the 25 th June. CHILDREN S 5KM FUN RUN RACE: A 5km race is open for children aged 10-14 years inclusive. The entry fee is Ksh 500 per child. The race will start at 0700 on Saturday the 25 th June. SPECTATORS: Each spectator is required to fill out a Spectator Form and complete a Spectator Disclaimer. All spectators staying at Lewa on the marathon weekend must pay full camping fees. COURSE: The course is a 21km loop run on dirt roads over an undulating route through the conservancy. The full marathon is run over two loops of the course and the half marathon over one loop. The course lies at an average altitude of 5,500 ft. MEDICAL SUPPORT AND WATER: Emergency medical support will be provided by AMREF, the flying doctors. A helicopter is on standby to carry out emergency medical evacuations from the course. A recovery tent is situated at the finish and will manned by medics from the Nairobi Equator Hospital, Red Cross and Nanyuki Cottage Hospital. Basic first aid is available at all water stations which are situated every 2.5km along the course. Please ensure that you bring a good supply of water for before and after the race. You are strongly advised to maintain your fluid intake prior to, during and after the race. Rehydrant drink will be available to all runners during the race. FESTIVAL IN THE PARK: A Festival in the Park will be held at the finish area after the race from 2-4pm. Please note there will be no evening event. For safety people not staying in one of the designated campsites will leave Lewa after the concert. PRIZES: Each runner will receive a medal and goody bag on finishing. Cash prizes are awarded in the full marathon male and female categories. The first five male and female full marathon runners will receive cash prizes as follows: 1 st - Ksh 150,000 2 nd - Ksh 80,000 3 rd - Ksh 60,000 4 th - Ksh 40,000 5 th - Ksh 20,000. The first three teams in the half marathon event will receive cash prizes as follows: 1 st - Ksh 80,000 2 nd - Ksh 40,000 3 rd - Ksh 20,000. A trophy will be awarded to the team that raises the most money. The first five community teams will receive cash prizes as follows: 1 st - Ksh 30,000 2 nd - Ksh 20,000 3 rd - Ksh 10,000 4 th - Ksh 5,000 5 th - Ksh 2,500. Prizes are also awarded in the first two male and female runners in the age categories Over 40, Over 50 and Over 60 event. Prizes are awarded to the first three boys and girls in the children s 5km fun run race.
ACCOMMODATION and TRANSPORT INFORMATION SHEET There are three accommodation options for runners and spectators wishing to stay at the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy over the marathon weekend SELF CATERING CAMPSITE: Ksh 3,000 per person per night (children 5-12 years Ksh 1,500, children under 5 free, no reduction for camp staff) The campsite is equipped with water points, cold showers, firewood and long drop loos. Competitors and spectators wishing to use the campsite are required to bring ALL camping equipment and food for the duration of their stay. The Campsite is open from Friday 24 th June to Sunday 27 th June. There is an option to stay in a Quiet camping area. Please note this event is held in a wildlife conservancy and therefore space within the designated camping areas is restricted. Whilst the organisers have created a Quiet camping area we ask that all campers respect their neighbours and act with consideration. If you propose to use an independent safari operator you MUST inform the organisers so that space can be allocated for your camp. Please email marathon@lewa.org SAFARICOM VILLAGE: Ksh 8,000 per person per night sharing. (Children 5-12 years Ksh 4,000 sharing with parents, children under 5 free). NB: There is a minimum of two nights stay at the Safaricom Village. The Safaricom Village consists of Igloo or similar type tents equipped with twin camp beds and bedding with one blanket. Spotlights are placed to illuminate the paths leading to the tents. You are required to bring your own torch and towel. Communual cold showers and long drop loos are situated behind the tents. Due to limited space there is no single occupancy of tents. It can be cold at night and in the early morning so bring warm clothing. Meals are served in a spacious semi open mess with buffet area. The food includes full breakfast, varied buffet lunches and three course meals in the evening. Water, tea and coffee are served with every meal. Meals are served on receipt of a meal ticket which are distributed at registration. The Pasta / Nyama Choma Party is inclusive for all those staying in the village. A wide selection of drinks are available at the cash bar. MARIDADI CAMP: Ksh 20,000 per person per night sharing. (Children 5-12 years Ksh 10,000 sharing with parents, children under 5 free) NB: There is a minimum of two nights stay at the Maridadi Camp. Single supplement of 8,000Ksh extra per night The Maridadi Camp is a traditional, comfortable, mobile tented camp with large walk-in tents with a verandah. They are fully equipped with twin beds, bedding, towels, side table, hurricane lantern, torch, table, wash basin, mirror and chairs. There is a hot bush shower and short drop loos attached in the rear shared between two tents. Meals are served in a spacious semi open mess tent with dining and buffet area. Meals consist of full English breakfast, buffet lunch and three course meals in the evenings. The Pasta / Nyama Choma Party is inclusive for those staying in the Maridadi Campsite. Water, tea and coffee are served with all meals. Other drinks can be bought from a cash bar. Please note the Maridadi camp is situated quite close to the headquarters, but it is not safe to walk out of the campsite and therefore transport is a necessity to reach the Start, Finish or race headquarters. CANCELLATION POLICY: Entry fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. There are no exceptions. Accommodation and transport fees are non-refundable and non-transferable if cancellation notice is received less than 30 days prior to the event. Cancellation received more than 30 days prior to the event will result in a refund of 70% of all accommodation fees. All flight bookings must be paid in full if cancellation received less than 96 hours before departure.

COMPETITORS DISCLAIMER SAFARICOM MARATHON and HALF MARATHON PLEASE READ THIS FORM CAREFULLY. Your application form will not be processed and you may not participate in the Safaricom Marathon / Half-Marathon unless you sign this form acknowledging that you have both read and understood it. Definitions: The Event is the Safaricom Marathon and Safaricom Half Marathon The Organisers are those persons organising the Event and may include the Directors of the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, the Directors of Tusk Trust Trading Ltd, the Directors of Safaricom Ltd and any member of their respective staff or other person (including race officials and the medical team) appointed by any of them to assist in the organisation of the Event. 1. I understand that participating in the Event in Kenya, within the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, is inherently dangerous and carries with it particular risks. Such risks include the possibility of encountering wild animals and those arising from running long distance over rugged terrain and at high altitude. Dehydration is a particular danger. 2. I am in good health and am not suffering from any medical condition, which might prevent me from or impede me in completing the Event successfully. 3. I have fully comprehensive medical insurance including that, which allows for emergency medical evacuation OR I have fully comprehensive medical insurance including that which allows for emergency medical evacuation and in the event of my requiring medical assistance or evacuation not covered by insurance, I accept full responsibility for any costs associated with such action 4. I will wear good quality, suitable and well fitting running shoes whilst taking part in the Event 5. I will obey all instructions of race officials and of any members of the medical team.
