2012-13 Green Bay Women s Basketball Tournament Time... This year s Cancun Challenge marks the third consecutive season Green Bay will be competing in a regular season tournament and second time it competes in the Cancun Challenge. Green Bay s current roster is 7-0 all-time in regular season tournament play including going 3-0 against Big Ten opponents. Solid Schedule... Green Bay s 30-game schedule features six nonconference opponents that appeared in postseason play last season. Four of Green Bay s first five opponents earned a spot in a postseason tournament in 2011-12. For the 26th season the Phoenix tips off its season on the road. Notable opponents for the 2012-13 season include James Madison, Richmond, Missouri, Marquette, Wisconsin and St. Bonaventure, who advanced to the Sweet 16 during last season s NCAA Tournament. Starting Sension... With Green Bay returning four of its five starters this season, senior Stephanie Sension fills the fifth spot for the Phoenix in the starting line-up. Sension has had impressive performances in her first pair of games in the starting lineup. After scoring 13 points, 12 in the first half, while playing a career-high 33 minutes in Green Bay s season opener at UNI Nov. 10, Sension tied a careerhigh seven rebounds in the home opener against Central Michigan Nov. 17 while pouring in 14 points. It was the first time in her career the redshirt senior has scored in double figures in back-to-back contests. Reliable Ritchie... As history proves, senior Adrian Ritchie has been a clutch player for Green Bay throughout her career and shows no signs of slowing down after a fast start to her final campaign with the Phoenix. After scoring 16 points in Green Bay s regular season opener at UNI Nov. 10, Ritchie posted her first career double double performance pouring in a game-high 25 and 10 rebounds while sinking a career-high 11 field goals in Green Bay s 75-48 win over Central Michigan Nov. 17. Thursday s game against James Madison will be Ritchie s 100th game in a Phoenix uniform. Teammates Sarah Eichler (103) and Lydia Bauer (100) have also reached the milestone. NCAA Records... With its second consecutive 30-win season (31-2) in 2011-12 and overall winning percentage of.728, Green Bay enters this season as the eighth winningest team (based on percentage) all-time in Division I and 14th winningest team all-time with 820 program victories. The Phoenix also completed its 35th-consecutive winning season which ranks third all-time behind Louisiana Tech and Tennessee who both have 39. In the last five years Green Bay is the third-winningest team based on percentage (.886) and fifth winningest team based on wins (148). Almost There... With 945 career points, senior Adrian Ritchie is expected to join Green Bay s 1,000 point club this season. Classmate Sarah Eichler has 773 career points while Lydia Bauer has amassed 680 points throughout her career. All of the previous players mentioned are on pace to join the 1,000-point club with Ritchie needing 55, Eichler needing 227, and Bauer needing 320. With her first career double double performance of 25 points and 10 rebounds on Nov. 17, individually, Ritchie currently ranks fifth on Green Bay s individual career record list with 365 three-point field goal attempts and fifth with 131 makes. Bauer sank four three pointers in the same contest and ranks 10th with 310 three-point field goal attempts and is two makes shy of cracking the top 10 list in the respective category. Fabulous Freshmen... This year s freshman class consists of seven players with five true freshmen and two redshirt freshmen. The class size marks the third time in program history Green Bay has entered the season with seven freshmen on its roster with the others being the 1985-86 and 2007-08 seasons. The Phoenix has the second largest freshman class among Horizon League opponents with UIC having eight freshman on its roster. Borseth is Back... This season a new, yet familiar coach takes the sidelines for the Phoenix as Kevin Borseth returns to Green Bay. For the first time in program history, on April 5, 2012, Green Bay announced the hiring of a coach from the Big Ten Conference, or any BCS school for that matter, when Borseth was introduced as the fourth coach in Green Bay s storied history. Borseth spent his previous five seasons as the head coach at the University of Michigan, compiling an overall record of 87-73. Prior to Michigan, in 1998 Borseth was hired as the second coach at Green Bay where he led the Phoenix to an impressive 216-62 record while advancing to the postseason all nine seasons. Horizon League Success... Green Bay looks to continue its success in Horizon League play as it currently leads the nation winning 14 consecutive regular season conference titles. The Phoenix has also captured 11 tournament titles. Under Borseth s leadership from 1998-2007, Green Bay compiled an impressive 125-13 record against Horizon League opponents, which currently ranks second in the league record book. This year s senior class is 50-4 overall and 26-1 against Horizon League foes on its home court.

GREENER AT GREEN BAY On April 5, 2012, Green Bay held a press conference to announce the re-hiring of Borseth, a popular and historic move in that it was the first time the program had welcomed back a head coach for a second tenure. Not only did the hiring excite Phoenix fans by welcoming back a legendary coach, but it also lured Borseth away from a job in the Big Ten Conference and in his home state. Borseth spent the past five seasons as the head coach at the University of Michigan, where he compiled an overall record of 87-73. Borseth took over a program that had won just 21 games in the prior three seasons combined and led the Wolverines to 19 wins and a postseason berth in his first season in 2007-08. In five years at Michigan, Borseth led the Wolverines to three postseasons, including a berth in the 2012 NCAA Tournament, the program s first appearance since 2000-01. Though the atmosphere at the Kress Events Center on April 5 was that of excitement and anticipation, the biggest questions began with the word why. Why come back to a program you ve already coached? Why leave a Big Ten program for a mid-major program? Why sacrifice a larger budget and more pay for a job you have already held? From my perspective, to come back here to an area that we can raise our family and children in, this walk of life keeps our family together for a long time, Borseth said of his decision to return. Everybody wants that opportunity to wonder what s out there, and I had the opportunity to experience and feel that level, but I didn t sit in that chair very well. It just didn t feel right. Borseth will be the first to admit he has never been a real patient person and wants success to happen right away. With that being said, Borseth learned throughout his career that you cannot skip any steps on the road to success. When Borseth took his first coaching job at the collegiate level at Michigan Tech in 1987, he took over a program that was at the bottom of the conference standings and had never had a winning season. After posting 10-17, 16-11 and 17-11 records in his first three years, Borseth led the Huskies to conference championships in 1991, 1992, 1993 and 1995. In 1998, Borseth agreed to take on the challenge of succeeding the only coach Green Bay had ever known in Carol Hammerle, who led the Phoenix to postseason play three times, including two trips to the NCAA Tournament. I think players like Chari Nordgaard, Melanie Tilque and Anne Warden really helped me in the process to realize everything would be OK, and we were going to work together to build on the previous success, said Borseth, who didn t skip a beat when he took over the reins the first time. Under Borseth s watch from 1998-2007, Green Bay compiled a 216-62 record while advancing to the postseason all nine seasons, including seven trips to the NCAA Tournament. The Phoenix also won the regular season conference championship in each of his nine seasons at the helm, beginning a stretch that currently stands at 14, the nation s longest streak. You really have to concentrate and focus on the steps. I realized throughout the years you can t skip any steps when you re doing this, no matter how small they are, Borseth said. Those are the steps that build the strong foundation of a program. Borseth has 25 years of collegiate coaching experience and has already proven he can succeed at Green Bay, but the patience rule still applies. With a new coach coming in, you can t just reinvent the wheel. Some of the things that were here in place, we are going to have to go with, Borseth said. When Matt Bollant came in, he had phone calls with me about the offensive structures that we ran

and incorporated a great deal of them, which today are still in existence. Like a good cook, you add your own spices. Borseth agreed that things will be different for the Green Bay players because of the coaching they received for the past five years. Though the coaching style will be different, in the long run the Green Bay Way will continue and be about trusting one another with open lines of communication and a clear message. Things work better when harmony is the first thing in your formula, it comes way before success, Borseth said. We have to take everything one game at a time. There are a lot of expectations with the Green Bay program because of the players high level of success. I think everybody expects it to just grow, but it s not a rocket ship. Just as Borseth, his staff and his players need to have patience in order to grow and learn with each other, the community needs to do so as well. What people need to understand is that this is going to be a lot more difficult than what meets the eye. People think everything in the beginning is going to be smooth and we re all going to ride off into the sunset, but that s certainly not the approach we re taking, Borseth said. It s going to be a lot more difficult than anybody imagines from that perspective. We are going to have to work extremely hard to maintain the level of success we ve had over the past 39 years. It is obvious Borseth has learned a lot about himself as a coach and as a person over the years. Borseth believes in being a firm, confident leader who is not blind to the fact that there is a lot more out there than just the world that s going on around him. Over the course of time, especially the last five years, I ve learned a lot, Borseth said. Sometimes coaches think the world revolves around them, and you find out the higher you go, it really doesn t. Now back in Green Bay, where he states the freeway ends and the country begins, Borseth is proud to be where he feels at home. I m not leaving Green Bay. My plan is not to leave Green Bay. I have no intentions of going any place, whether I m coaching basketball or not, I don t plan on going anywhere. The entire Borseth family - including from left to right, Kayla, KC, Kaitlyn, Kevin, Kale, Connie and Carli - is excited to call Green Bay home once again.
