On the other end of the spectrum, Chicago has won 19 games by four or more runs this season, tied for second-most in baseball with Boston, trailing only Houston (20) Chicago s.760 winning percentage in games decided by at least four runs is third in baseball behind Boston (19-4/.826) and Houston (20-6/.769). Chicago has won seven of its last nine games and is 8-3 in its last 11 contests last night s setback snapped a four-game winning streak. The Cubs are 11-6 against the N.L. A RARE OCCURRENCE: Last night, Philadelphia s Zach Eflin became the first starting pitcher to go more than 7.0 innings against the Cubs this season in fact, Chicago had gone 79-straight games without the opposing starter recording an out in the eighth since Gerrit Cole threw 8.0 innings, Sept. 6 of last season in a Cubs 1-0 victory. Lester s outing on Sunday was his 42nd since 2015 in which he threw at least 6.0 innings and allowed one or no runs those 42 such outings are third-most in the majors, trailing only Max Scherzer (44) and Jake Arrieta (44). OPEN AND SHUT CASE: Chicago on Sunday recorded its eighth shutout of the season, tied for the most in the majors with Pittsburgh, and already matching its total from 2017 the Cubs last had more shutouts in 2016, when they tied for the major league lead (with the Dodgers) with 15 such games. PUTTING THE BALL IN PLAY: Cubs batters rank third in the N.L. in plate appearances per strikeout (4.86), trailing only Atlanta (5.09) and Pittsburgh (5.08) among N.L. clubs, the Cubs ranked 10th in 2017 in PA/SO (4.48) were sixth in 2016 (4.73) and last in 2015 (4.08). THIS PEN IS BULLISH: The Cubs bullpen owns a 2.58 season ERA (62 ER/216.0 IP) that ranks second among major league bullpens behind Arizona (2.57) Chicago s relievers have posted a.201 opponent batting average (156-for-775) and a.591 opponent OPS, both the best marks in the majors.
