Computer Science Education Week - This December we will be celebrating Computer Science Education Week and participating in the Hour of Code. Our goal for Computer Science Education Week is for all students in grades 2-8 to work on the Star Wars Hour of Code program available here https://code.org/starwars. Our younger students will play a game to introduce them to the problem solving in computer programming. The goal of Hour of Code is to introduce students (and adults!) to programming and introduce them to a possible career option. Computer programming, or coding, helps build up logic, problem solving skills, and creativity. Penguin Patch - December 4th-8th - Heron PTSA is pleased to host the Penguin Patch holiday shop for our students this year. Penguin Patch is an opportunity for your students to shop for Hanukkah and Christmas gifts for family and friends. Gifts range in price from 25 to $12.00. All students will visit the shop in the library with their class during their regularly scheduled library time during the week of December 4th - 8th. The shop will also be open after school on Tuesday only from 2:20pm - 4:00pm. Students will be sent home with a money envelope and shopping list. Please be sure to send them to school with money the week of December 4th-8th. For a sample of the types of gifts available visit Penguin Patch Gifts 2017 - Penguin Patch Holiday Shop. Our New Middle School Building and STEAM Center Will Be Open Soon! Our middle school teachers are starting to pack up their rooms, and we will be moving into the new buildings starting the week of December 19th! We are so excited to welcome our students back from Winter Break into their brand new classrooms, science labs, and production studio! Our current middle school science lab (Mrs. McDaniels room) will soon become our Elementary STEAM lab! A Grand Opening event for families will be hosted in early January. IN THE SPOTLIGHT: The California School Dashboard The new California School Dashboard is available for parents to access at https://www.caschooldashboard.org/#/home, and has recently been updated with our 2016-2017 data. This article published by the California School Board Association (CSBA) provides a helpful explanation of the new dashboard and how it can help parents understand the progress being made by their child s school. Resources available to help parents understand the California School Dashboard PUBLISHED: APRIL 12, 2017 On March 15, the California Department of Education and the State Board of Education unveiled the highly anticipated California School Dashboard, a new online tool for measuring school and school district performance. The new, multifaceted dashboard replaces the Academic Performance Index, an accountability system that assigned a single score to schools based on standardized test results. The dashboard replaces the old, one-size-fits-all approach of API by providing multiple measures of student learning and reporting those measures in a format similar to a student report card. Assessing six state indicators and four local indicators (or six local indicators for county offices of education) using a color-coded, five-level pie chart ranking system, the new accountability tool provides a more nuanced and holistic account of school performance. A component of the Local Control Funding Formula, the new California School Dashboard is a useful tool for improving equity, explained CSBA Legislative Advocate Teri Burns. The dashboard provides information on student achievement, school climate and school performance, metrics that will allow for easier identification of areas that need targeted support. The dashboard is believed to be an important instrument for strengthening local control and ensuring that stakeholders are allocating resources to areas that require improvement. Burns further said: It is important for parents to familiarize themselves with their Dashboards, not just in order to be cognizant of general school performance, but also in order to track progress and disparities in multiple areas. The tools built into the dashboard can help parents be informed advocates when it comes to their children s education. With incomplete and missing data, the current dashboard is still work in progress. Two state indicators Chronic Absenteeism and College/Career Readiness and information for other local indicators will be added to the dashboard as data becomes available. A complete version of the dashboard is estimated to be released by fall 2018. CSBA has curated a variety of web resources available to help explain the dashboard to parents and the general public: CDE: California School Dashboard Fast Start Guide A single-page roadmap for navigating the Dashboard s different components. CDE: Getting to Know the California School Dashboard A two-page fact sheet about the Dashboard s indicators and various reports. EdSource: Statewide California School Dashboard Database An easy-to-navigate database for finding any school or district s Dashboard.

AUDITION NOTICE Dear Parents and Guardians, The audition for the Missoula Children's Theatre production of Beauty Lou and The Country Beast will be held on Monday, December 11, 2017 from 3:00 PM to 5 PM inside the Heron Multipurpose Room. There are roles for students in kindergarten through 8 th grade. Approximately 50-60 local students will be cast to appear in the show with the MCT Tour Actor/Director. There is no guarantee that everyone who auditions will be cast in the play. Students wishing to audition must arrive by the scheduled starting time and stay for the entire two-hour session. The first rehearsal begins approximately 15-minutes after the audition. This is a group audition no advance preparation is necessary, but a smile never hurts. Students should just be ready to come and have a good time! Rehearsals will be conducted every day in the Heron Multipurpose Room, from 3:00 PM to 7:15 PM, except for Tuesday (minimum day) when it will be from 2:00 PM to 6:15 PM. Although not all cast members will be needed at every session, those auditioning must have a clear schedule for the entire week and if selected, be able to attend all rehearsals required for their role and be available for all scheduled performances. A detailed rehearsal schedule will be distributed at the conclusion of the audition. Cast members scheduled for the full 4 hours and 15 minutes will be asked to bring a sack lunch, dinner or snack to be eaten during the 15-minute break between sessions. The performances will be held on Friday December 15, 2007 at 7:00 PM and Saturday, December 16, 3:00 PM and will be presented at Heron School. The Missoula Children's Theatre is a non-profit organization based in Missoula, Montana. This coming year more than 65,000 cast members across the globe will take to the stage to the delight and applause of their families, friends, community, neighbors and teachers! The residency in Heron Elementary School, Sacramento is made possible by Heron PTSA. For any questions please contact your class rep. Please remember everyone who is selected through auditions is not guaranteed a part in the show unless pre-registration guidelines are followed!

PERMISSION SLIP Heron PTSA & Missoula Children s Theater Permission Slip My student,, has permission to attend the audition for Beauty Lou and The Country Beast on December 11, 2017 from 3:00PM to 5:00PM at Heron School Multipurpose Room. I understand that, not all students that audition for the show will get to participate. (Auditions are a subjective process and do not always seem fair. With many students auditioning for a limited number of roles, the decisions of the Tour Actor/Directors are not easy. This is admittedly the most difficult aspect of their job. How one reacts to disappointment is a tremendous test of character. Our students will look up to us as an example of how to react. Compliment them for their efforts and for taking a risk auditioning for the show.) I understand that, if chosen for the play, my student may need to attend rehearsal from 3:00PM to 7:00PM, Monday through Friday. They will also need to be available for performances on Friday 7PM to 8:15 PM and Saturday 2:00 PM to 4:15 PM. I understand that students will not be excused from rehearsals or performances for practices, appointments, etc., but must keep the week completely free for this residency week.
