Oceania Weightlifting Federation Latest News July,2013 THANK YOU BRISBANE IT WAS GREAT!! The 2013 Oceania Senior, Junior and Youth Championships held in Brisbane at the Chandler Complex on July 10-14 turned out to be a sensational event. Great battles, records, big crowd, magnificently organised and a record number of lifters.the Championships combined with the Australian Senior and Junior Championships became the biggest tournament in the numbers of lifters taking part in this region in the history of the sport. Just over 300 entries were registered. However due to visa problems with some of the Island countries the numbers came down to 246 competitors. This was still an enormous number for only four days of competition. Many of the men s categories needed to split in to A and B groups with some even having to have a C group. The four day tournament attracted an enthusiastic crowd of 4,500 people. The venue was the Chandler Complex Sleeman Theatre which was the same venue built for the 1982 Commonwealth Games. It had everything. Meeting rooms, anti-doping rooms, weigh-in rooms, VIP room, saunas, training. hall etc.. All of these The victory ceremony of the 69Kg category with H.E facilities were under on roof. The warm up area was excellent. Baron Waqa President of the Republic of Nauru presenting the medals. Over 100 technical officials, managers and coaches were in attendance over the four day tournament.many VIP s attended the championships including His Excellency, Baron Waqa, President of the Republic of Nauru.Other highlights of the championships included the webcast produced by Bowen Stuart where 68 countries tuned in. These Championships were originally to be held in Wallis & Futuna Islands. However due to lack of suitable accommodation in Wallis, the Australian Weightlifting Federation came to the rescue and agreed to host the Oceania Championships in Brisbane in conjunction with the Australian Senior and Junior Championships. Dika Toua PNG, 53Kg wins best female lifter of the championships. David Katoatau Kiribati 105Kg wins the male best lifter. The OWF wishes to express its sincerest gratitude to the Australian Weightlifting Federation and in particular the Queensland Weightlifting Association for their outstanding organization in staging this magnificent event. Finally special thanks must go to the many volunteers who assisted in running the event and in particular the competition Directors Mr. Ian Moir, the Executive Director of the Queensland Weightlifting Federation and Mr. Michael Keelan the CEO of the Australian Weightlifting Federation. With regards to the 2014 Oceania Championships and Olympic Youth Qualification, Fiji withdrew from hosting the event. And after the matter went to a vote, it was awarded to Samoa. The President of the OWF the Hon. Marcus Stephen presents The OWF Life membership to Mr Bruce Cameron NZL The new version of the OWF logo reproduced by Robert Kabbas was unanimously accepted by all delegates. Robert Kabbas reproduced a new version of the OWF Logo and this was unanimously accepted by all countries. The second year of the OTIP program was launched during the Congress. Every country in attendance praised this project. And it was pleasing to see that quite a few lifters who attended the OTIP training camp at the Oceania Weightlifting Institute last year, were this year competing in the Championships in Brisbane. All countries attending were very pleased with the way the Oceania Institute is working. It was highlighted that the institute is at full capacity currently with 13 countries having their top weightlifters in residence and the Institute now has a waiting list for countries who want to send their lifters to train at the Institute.
